I hired Gotta Have It Catering for an office Christmas lunch for around 60 people. Our servers arrived 2 hours prior to get the tables, chairs, and everything else set up. They were so friendly and great to work with! The food was incredible and we were left with plenty of leftovers. I was nervous about there being enough food and was so happy that there was extra. Between the friendly staff, amazing food, and quick clean up, the lunch went so well and everyone in the office raved about the food. This is such a well run company and I couldn't have been happier with the results. I will be using them again for our next office lunch and will be recommending them to everyone I know!

Nikki is an excellent chef - food was delicious. She was on time and was very personable! The young men she brought with her were so nice! I had asked for her to prepare extra homemade croutons for me to have the next day and though she said of course I suspect in the haste to leave she forgot them. ( By the way they were great!) The only comment I would make in using a chef versus my regular caterers is that Nikki and her team planned to leave while we were eating dessert. In doing so I would have been left to clean all those dishes ( 10 seated guests) and wine glasses myself. She said that was the way she always did things. None of my caterers have ever done that -- that is part of what you are paying for ($700+) to enjoy your evening and have no work to do ! Just being hostess is enough getting the house and flowers and table set! Nikki knew we had 50 people arriving post dinner for an after party and needed the dinner dishes all pulled and cleaned - was very disappointed that we had to discuss that at the last minute! I had hired a separate bartender for the glasses to be taken care at the post party. I expected her to not do any of those dishes. I did ask her to place trays of desserts I had prepared on the "cleaned off" dining table when they finished. ( I paid them a handsome tip for doing this) Also - I have never had a caterer use the dishwasher for my dishes - I have always found them hand washed and stacked in kitchen. Nikki's team loaded my dishwashers (2) with the hand painted china and sterling flatware. I should have explained that is not done - my mistake, I just haven't had to before. She is an EXCELLENT CHEF! Services are not as "easy" on the host and her familiarity with things like the china and silver should be discussed before hand. Be very specific about every detail on how you see the evening going - write it up so you both know. We had Sea Bass and It Was Amazing!

I truly LOVED working with Cooking with a star Catering. A buffet style wasn't what I had originally wanted, but what I had to do for our budget. They have changed my opinion about buffet weddings forever! The food was what sold us right away at our tasting. We couldn't wait the 9 months to have the roast again it was that yummy! I have several compliments from our guests on how great the food was and was presented, and let's be honest wedding food isn't always the best. Once you go to a tasting you will understand, the food and service are way above the price you pay for. Using them felt like a steal! Kendra was so easy to work with and the communication was great. GeGee on the day of was such an angel. She was extremely attentive to myself and the groom, always making sure I had food or a drink. My husband and I ended up having seconds because I enjoyed my meal that much. You cannot go wrong with using this amazing catering company.

I hired Kelsey for a surprise romantic dinner for my bf and Kelsey's creations were even more phenomenal then i could have imagined! Kelsey helped me with choosing the menu, sending endless options until I was pleased. She was extremely professional, arrived on time & when serving each meal explained every item precisely. For appetizers we had the spinach & artichoke stuffed bread, with crab cakes + roasted red pepper aioli. The best crab cakes & bread I have ever tasted! For our entrees we went with balsamic brown sugar lamb chop with sweet potato mash with chili brown sugar crumble. & also roasted Rosemary chicken breast with baby potatoes & Brussel sprouts. The food was so flavorful and delicious!! My bf absolutely loved the lamb. I would def Reccomend Kelsey. She is extremely talented & her food was incredible. Each dish was just perfect. We loved our dining experience and look forward to hiring her again!

Chef Marcus Mack was hired to cook our annual Christmas Dinner for approx. 180 attendees. This was my first experience putting together such a large event and Chef Mack made it so easy. We supplied the location and he literally handled everything else flawlessly. He stuck to our agreed upon budget and best of all the food was fabulous. I am still receiving kudos from my staff for his turkey , ham and chicken feast. Well done Chef Mack!

It is wonderful when ones first experience with a caterer is exactly what you were told it would be! Allison and her group prepared an A+ experience for us and our Christmas Eve guest. The menu is extensive and our choices were prepared perfectly. Much was prepared in our home so we had the bonus of yummy smells of good food, which our guests loved. Thank you Allison, we will certainly have them back.

We used Function Events for our neighborhood holiday party. Daphne was a true pleasure to work with, since we were on a very tight budget. She came out and met us in person at the event venue to be sure we had everything just right, and provided all of the holiday decorations to make our party sparkle-at no additional charge. Her staff is very hard working and detail oriented, they also did an excellent job with the cleanup. Highly recommend!

Tad catered a holiday breakfast for a group of philanthropic executive women in the Atlanta community and did a fantastic job. Not only was the food delicious but the presentation was beautiful. He was also a dream to work with. Bending over backwards to make sure we had everything we needed and that everything ran smoothly. He was also very patient and flexible with our last minute changes. I would definitely recommend him for your event.

I found Daddy's Girl BBQ just searching for holiday catering companies on Google. I had an awesome experience ordering for our catered Thanksgiving Day Meal. Mrs. Darling was very personable, professional and the food was delicious! She was even able to assist me in providing last minute food items for a separate event-which was greatly appreciated and super accommodating of her amidst a busy holiday catering season. I will definitely be using her services going forward and would gladly recommend her to cater any events.

I couldn't have asked for a better caterer on our wedding day!The food was amazing and the presentation was perfection! Everyone kept talking about how great the food was and how attentive the servers were to our guests. We did a buffet style set up at an outdoor venue. They also provided a bartender. Anyone from below the Mason Dixon line knows just how important it is to have a homemade red velvet cake for Christmas. After hearing great things about Better Than Granny, I decided to order a red velvet cake for my family gathering. Not only was I impressed by the taste of the cake, I was pleased with the presentation. I could tell the cake had been made with patience and passion. I was also impressed that it was hand-delivered by the chef himself. Trey Winfrey is an artist in the kitchen and I would recommend him to anyone who enjoys great-tasting and well-presented food.

The folks at Baby Boy Catering (Richard and Vicky) were fantastic !! From our very first conversation, Richard put at ease and made us feel very confident that they would take care of the whole catered meal experience -- and they did !! The food was wonderful. We had grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries and onion rings with some of Richard's special sides- of special note were the mac and cheese, baked beans and home made chili. They arrived on time, were great to work with and cleaned everything up when they left. We highly recommend Baby Boy Catering !!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
