I have hired GHI catering for a wedding that will be in May of 2016. Vince and Travis have been wonderful in preparing a complete catering package for us that is wonderful and affordable. They have prepared a tasting from their food truck that was delicious and even done a venue consultation. We are so excited to be working with them and can't wait for the event.

Nikki is a fabulous personal chef & caterer. We hired her and and her team to cater our wedding reception of 60 guests. The buffet was setup nice and the food was even better! We truly enjoyed the entire spread from Coconut-Curry Chicken Skewers to some kind of macaroni pie she made. It was all delicious! I recommend her for next event!

I can't say enough about how great Mike is. He made everything so so so easy for me, and the food was incredible. Heading into wedding planning, I wasn't really concerned about the food (since wedding food is usually not that fantastic). Mike totally changed my mind and proved that I could get excited about the meal! His food is AMAZING, and he and his staff are incredibly warm and professional. He's a great communicator and never missed a beat with phone calls and emails. His pricing is very fair, and he really provides wraparound service. Don't delay - hire him.

Kendra, was responsive, on time and oh yes, she delivered deliciously tasting food! On May 21, 2017 she catered our son's and his brides wedding. After the wedding we asked family members to critique the food; we had roasted chicken, plum meatballs, mashed potatoes and on request of my son, mac and cheese. Everyone unanimously said everything was delicious, they wouldn't change a thing. So, yes, we highly recommend Kendra, Cooking with A Star. She was also spot on with the signature cocktail drink! Cooking with a Star absolutely gets 5 stars from us. Dave and Caroline Colonna

I would like to give a thumbs up to Pas De Deux Catering, I used this catering service for my wedding reception, and was very impressed. The food and the services were great and very reasonable. Marcus, was able to help me at the last minute seeing that I wasn't pleased with my last caterer. I would definitely use his services again and would highly recommend him, trust me you will not be disappointed.

Stephanie and the team at Cabaki's did an amazing job for not only my wedding but also my wedding rehearsal dinner! The variety on her menu and the versatility she offers with her team is extraordinary. As somewhat of a foodie myself, I will say I was very nervous for any caterer to handle the food for one of the most important days of my life. However, Stephanie took away all of my concerns and provided above and beyond service with excellent communication and a quick response with any questions or concerns I may have had. Not only did my friends and family enjoy the amazing spread, they also raved about the unique dessert that we requested from Stephanie. Not everyone can make a croquembouche! Not only did she and her team create a beautiful croquembouche they also provided a tasty and delicious dessert that all of my guests talked about. I cannot thank Stephanie and her team enough for putting all of my concerns to rest and providing detail and quality that surpassed my highest expectations. If there is any event in the future that requires catering, I will be calling on Stephanie and her team at Cabaki's catering!

I am so very glad that I decided to hire Tad for my wedding. From the very first time we met for the tasting, the food was spectacular and everything was freshly made. Tad and Reggie are such wonderful people who really care to make your event special. It's not just about the money for them and they will go out of their way to make sure everything is covered and if anything goes wrong, they have a plan in place to fix it. Everyone at our wedding said it was the best wedding they had ever been too and it was the best wedding food they had ever eaten. People would not stop raving about the appetizers, southern buffet, and cupcake desserts. Tad's team also provided all of the tables, chairs, linens, and decor items. Everything was beautiful and looked like it was straight out of a magazine. Tad even arrived 7 hours prior to start setting up and cooking so everything could be freshly made on-site..... I typically do not right reviews and I know looking back I was a control-freak bride but Tad and his team accommodated me and all my needs very well. And I am a very hard person to please to say the least. Lol :) I started planning with Tad one year from my wedding date and in that time I called, texted, and changed my mind about a billion different times. But Tad was always there to help, listen, and give guidance. I will definitely be using Tad for future events and will be recommending him and his team to all of my friends who are getting married. Oh and for the amount and quality of food you get, you can't beat his price! ~Veronica & Jeremy

Cupid's Pantry provided catering services for my parents 50th Wedding Anniversary. They were honestly more than just a catering company. Chenoa and her staff were amazingly professional and provided an overall experience for the event. The food was incredible! Chenoa used very fresh tasting ingredients with the perfect level of seasoning. They were even able to work with discriminate eaters such as pescatarians/vegetarians on the spot. Chenoa provided excellent insight on last minute decor details. The entire team made myself(the host) and all of my guests feel special and cared for. I definitely recommend Cupid's Pantry catering for any of your catering events!

I couldn't have asked for a better caterer on our wedding day!The food was amazing and the presentation was perfection! Everyone kept talking about how great the food was and how attentive the servers were to our guests. We did a buffet style set up at an outdoor venue. They also provided a bartender. I'm a huge critic when it comes to food but I have to say the quality and flavor blew me away. My party was a hit and success and a huge part had to do with your potato greens, fried fish, spinach dip, string beans, and can't forget your crab cakes. Will book in the future for all events including my wedding.

Absolutely some of the best catered food I've ever had! Ms. Griffin catered my daughter's wedding and I am still receiving compliments on her food! I would recommend her and her staff for any event. She was extremely professional and made a very stressful time seem like a 'cake walk'!

Gwen was wonderful to work with in helping us plan the perfect food for my daughter's wedding reception. Gwen and her staff were professional at all times. The wedding was three weeks ago and we still have guests talking about how beautifully decorated everything was, the gorgeous and tasty wedding cake and how wonderful the food tasted and perfectly presented. The tenderloin was to die for! Thanks, Gwen, for taking the pressure off of me regarding the food and the decorations for the serving area - I felt so comfortable after speaking with you that I knew everything would be perfect, and it was!

Incredible people!! Our caterer the day before the wedding cancelled and kept our deposit. We had to find someone quick and the Patterson family was referred by the a grocery store clerk while we were crying buying items for wedding and trying to Figure it out. They met us that night and stayed up all night and catered our sons wedding. They fed over 200 people in less than 24 hours!!! We will use them For everything . Not sure why they don’t have a restaurant . There food is incredible. They did a funeral for us last week as well , amazing food.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
