Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

These guys were awesome!! They got me moved from my 2 bedroom apartment into a storage unit in a smooth, professional, and fast manner. Even when I had a bit of a hiccup at the storage facility that delayed my time, they were accommodating and moved swiftly to complete the move once things were cleared up. I would definitely recommend them to my friends and family!!

The guys worked 8 hours in 94 degree heat to get the move done. They worked hard to get all my stuff in storage. It was a long and stressful day but at least the moving part was made easier..

This guy is awesome! You will not find a better mover on Thumbtack. I had a huge antique Bombay cabinet in storage. He and his great assistant came out late after completing another job and single handedly move the cabinet from storage to my 5th floor apartment. Man! This guy had the utmost professionalism and knew what he was doing. Thank you for doing a great job.

Amazing service. Relocated furniture from 3 rooms in my home into a storage unit. They were the first moving company I’ve ever hired that didn’t cause damage to any portion of my house or my furniture. They treated all of possessions with care.

I hired two men to help us load a truck when moving everything out of storage. I couldn't have done it without them, they were very fast and professional. The only reason I am giving 4 and not 5 stars is that they showed up 50 minutes late.

These guys were awesome. Mike and Bryan took care of our stuff and were very professional. Sharon got us set up and was flexible with our move. We had a local move plus a stop at storage. They even took off a huge load of trash/junk/construction material and a deep freezer. These are hard-working guys who care about their customers. I would highly recommend them.

The only "problem" was that the arrival time was much later than scheduled. Fortunately, I left room in my schedule for this potential possibility. That being said.... The very nice and mannered three men took very much care in making sure that my piano was protected ....getting it ready.....putting it onto the truck ... proper driving....and taking care, again, while unloading to put into storage. They also helped move a few boxes that were already in the storage unit that I couldn't pick up so that we could make room for the piano. In addition, they brought plenty of blankets to protect the piano from scratches which I kept and I was happy to pay for the $10 per blanket charge.

These guys were, in short, amazing! I'm completely impressed with how fast they moved everything. They had my 10x10 storage (which was packed full, top to bottom, from a two bedroom apartment) loaded up in less than an hour before heading to our 1br apartment to clear it and bring it all to our new house. I could be more pleased. I mentioned them to my, now past, neighbors and they want me to send them their number. If/when I move again these guys will be first call! Very friendly, prompt, and thorough. Thank you gentlemen!

my experience with this company was good and bad. my movers were micah and ontarious. starting with the good...it took them 4 hours to complete the job. not only did they complete it in 4 hours, they moved me in the rain (which i was told by their receptionist/scheduler that the company CANNOT DO). micah was polite the entire time, and moved quickly with unloading my storage unit as ontarious packed everything in. ontarious was able to get everything in the moving truck. the only thing i have found broken so far, is the knob on my entertainment center. now, the things that bothered me was that my move was scheduled between 9a-11a. the receptionist called me at 8pm the night before to tell me my move HAD to be changed to 3pm due to delays due to rain. that did not make me happy because one: why wait until late at night to tell me this? two, she didn't give me a choice. did she ask the people who couldn't move to possibly move another day? i understand weather is not in our control, but i don't think she tried hard enough. i told her i don't have a flexible schedule to move later in the day, and she said she'd call ME in the morning. she never did. i called the company 3x around 10a and no one answered. micah didn't call me til 3p to tell me they were on the way. by that time it started raining again. then they didn't care if my items got wet. some of my pillows (that were packed in trash bags), got dirt on them. some items got so wet i was wiping everything down as they brought stuff in. ontarious showed up with an attitude. he didn't even greet my grandfather and i when they showed up. then had the nerve to NOT ask me where i wanted items place when we got to my new home. he just sat stuff wherever. that has never happened to me during a move. i had to move things around. at one point he DROPPED all of my brooms and mops in the middle of the hall and just left them there until i moved them. the entire time i'm thinking, what is this man's problem. he rarely engaged with me or micah. i gave a tip more so for micah because he was polite, and ASKED me where i wanted things. towards the end i had plants to bring in, and they were acting like they almost didn't want to bring them up... overall, i'm happy it all got finished, but i won't rehire.
