Jerome from Epic4 did an amazing job on our carpets. We are moving into a new home (rental), and the property management had already had the carpets cleaned prior to showing. Even still, we had a Epic4 come out to clean up, and the quality of the cleaning was noticeable over what the other company did a month prior. Plus, I was given an appointment time of 12pm, and Jerome was there a couple minutes before 12pm. I was told that it would take about 3 hours to complete the work, and he was done and and packed up about 5 minutes after 3. Simply fantastic service on all fronts.

Carlos was very professional and thorough in his diagnosis of the electrical problem. He showed up about 10 minutes early which is awesome. He explained everything step by step and I discovered the previous home owner "Mickey Moused" the outdoor electrical work. I would definitely hire Carlos again for any future projects I will have. A+service

I had a really great experience with Sick Building Group. Anthony and his associate came right over when I called, and were able to start immediately on a time-sensitive project. Anthony explained every aspect of the process to me, so that I felt well-informed about what I was paying for. He did a beautiful job of transforming my sick crawl space back into a clean, healthy environment. His associate, Brent, did the restoration work, and he was quite the perfectionist. The tile that he laid on the new floor looks absolutely fantastic. I feel that Sick Builders went beyond the call of duty to get the job done, working evenings, and making themselves available after hours to answer my questions. Anthony gave me a nice discount to make the job affordable, and gave me a little bit of time to pay it off. Nobody wants to pay for mold removal, but If you have to do it, Anthony and Sick builders are the people to call.

I bought a house in March, it has good location and good price, but it smells as if the previous owner smoked in the house from the date the house was built..It was bad. I tried everything, ozone, charcoal, vinegar..all treatments i tried just temporarily controlled the cigarette smell. And even my clothes start to get cigarette smell! As a first time home owner, I was terrified when I googled and found some people had to changed everything in the house to get rid of the smell. I am very glad i found Tim on Thumbtack. I called him in a late afternoon, he explained the whole process to me, quoted and explained the price, and set up an appointment in the same week. He was very knowledgable and answered all of my questions. In comparison to Yankee Candles, his service is pricey, but I feel it is totally worth it. In comparison to a total renovation, his service worth each penny!

I was in need of a roof repair, and Hood Roofing provided me with everything i expect to see in a well-run business. To work with my schedule, Bruce came out in the evening to give me an estimate. He arrived on time. He was open and honest about the timing to start and complete the project and called me to keep me informed of any delays. He is very knowledgeable of the work he was doing and I will surely keep them in mind for any future repairs I may need.

The Art of Home Improvement replaced the roof on our house in Rome. We are completely happy and very satisfied with our new roof, all the way around – quality of workmanship, materials, labor, value, communication, thoroughness, and care and clean-up of our property. Ray's bid was based on data that he used that is specific to our older home. His bid was accurate, thorough and fair. Very professional! When Ray and I met early on to first discuss the roof replacement, he offered many options concerning construction and shingle types. He explained up front what the entire job would entail from beginning to end. Our home is in the historic district, and is nearly 80 years old. Ray updated the old venting system with new ridge vents, which will lower heating and cooling bills, new drip edge and new flashing all around. Ray left shingle samples with us, and we were able to hold the sample up to our cedar shingle siding, in order to choose the right color shingle. We were considering a light color which would not have looked good on our home at all, but when we were able to compare a sample next to our siding, we realized how a darker, slate color was the perfect choice. It looks great! Ray kept in contact with us prior to beginning the job. If I had a question or concern, Ray returned my calls or emails promptly. He made it clear that he is available anytime if I have a concern following completion. All is good. The crew was great! All are very nice young people. I have done some roofing in my younger days, and I can they know what they are doing. Ray and his crew worked hard, non-stop, all day to complete the job. They covered the driveway, our plants and shrubs and our deck with tarps to protect them. No plant was damaged, and our deck looks as good as always. Clean up was extremely thorough. They cleaned the gutters, swept up and picked up any small shingle materials, and then they used magnets and a magnetic roller to pick up stray roofing nails that may have missed the tarps. We have had no nail issues. Ray even left a large magnet wand with us, so that when the dumpster was hauled away the following morning, I could use it to pick up nails and metal debris that may have been under the dumpster, or had fallen out when they winched the dumpster up to the truck. Ray is a nice man, and it was a pleasure to do business with The Art of Home Improvement. Ray was on time with each and every appointment, start time and completion time that he gave us. Ray returned each and every communication with us in a very timely manner. The Art of Home Improvement’s customer service is top notch! We love our new roof! Our house looks great!! The quality of construction, the warranties for construction and materials, and the pleasant experience we had working with Ray and The Art of Home Improvement are all 5 star!! If you are looking for a good roofing company, which is friendly, reliable, does great work at a great price, and keeps its commitments, then I would not hesitate to choose The Art of Home Improvement for the job. Thank you.

Josh, Critter Wranglers' owner, gave me a fair price and was on time. He took the time to help me understand where squirrels were getting into my attic from. He not only rid the attic of squirrels, but also made repairs to the roof so that they would not get back in. I have nothing but the best to say of him!

I had a water leak and had to get carpet replaced, hole in dry wall repaired and room re-painted and sealing of the shower. I was pleased with the service and they did a good job, quickly, and left me with good peace of mind since I was not present during the time the work was being performed. Chris was responsive and quickly gave me an estimate where as other companies were not as responsive to give me an estimate or were not confident in working on a high rise building. I would for sure use Total Services Restoration again in the future.

I called Reliable Restorations & Remodeling when we had water damage at my condo. The damage was pretty bad so we had to replace the carpet, fix the ceiling and dry walls in the living room and kitchen. We also had to paint the living room and kitchen as well. I replaced carpet with hardwood floor in the living room as part of the restoration and it looks awesome. Teyon and his team did an excellent job. They were very professional. Teyon is professional yet friendly, informative, and a very helpful resource. He is also very good in prompt and timely communication. He walked me through to the whole process and made recommendations on what would go best with each fix. He gave me the timelines and the scope of work for the project and he met it. He manged to keep me updated on daily basis. Teyon is very client oriented. He worked with my insurance company every step of the way, and made sure we did not accrue any additional expense besides the deductible.I need to to mention his help to me with the insurance to get my bedroom carpets replacement also included in the estimate. Initially I was dealing with another company (one of the top most) for about a month and they lacked the communication/expertise to deal with my insurance and represent on my behalf. The moment Teyon took over the restoration job, he dealt with them in a very professional manner with acceptable reports and my insurance approved the bedrooms carpet replacement with no further questions. Reliable Restorations has also offered warranty on the service and they would come back and fix it with no questions asked. In the end, they did a wonderful job on the repairs. Everything turned out great. I highly recommend Reliable Restoration for restoration and remodeling tasks.

The Remediation Team did not have to perform any repairs at my house. Which is exactly why they earned my 4 star rating-by being honest! Instead of telling me to spend $800-$1000 on our chimney, they said we simply needed to have our gutters cleaned and this would stop the water that had leaked through front of our fireplace. My husband had a broken hand and had not been able to clean them. Once we got that completed, the leaking did not occur with the next rain.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What is a mold remediation?

Mold remediation is the process of identifying and removing unhealthy levels of mold that have colonized in a home, office, school or other building. Over time, if untreated, mold can destroy a home by breaking down cellulose-based materials (like wood or ceiling tiles) and causing a slow and messy decay. In the shorter term, a mold infestation can cause severe health problems. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), mold can trigger respiratory problems, nasal and sinus congestion, eye irritation, nose or throat irritation, skin irritations, problems with your nervous system, and aches and pains. Mold inspection and mold remediation are often requested in tandem, although they are two separate services. Nationally, mold inspection costs range from $250 to $300. If mold has been positively identified in your house, either by visual examination or through mold testing, remediation can safely remove it. Properly trained and equipped professionals use specialized equipment (like vacuums and air scrubbers with HEPA filters) to keep mold spores contained while they remove contaminated materials and treat infested areas with antimicrobial spray. A key component to a successful mold remediation after eliminating the mold is ensuring that the water source that caused the mold infestation is also resolved.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

How does mold remediation work?

Mold remediation can eliminate mold colonies from your home or business. Mold is a normal part of daily life, but in wet or humid settings mold can quickly colonize and spread by making spores. Whether visible or hidden, untreated mold can cause real health problems and cause extensive (and expensive) damage to your property. Mold remediation involves killing the mold, removing the dead mold and preventing future mold growth. Here is an example of the steps involved in professional mold remediation:

  • Contain work area and apply negative air pressure HEPA air purifiers to prevent cross-contamination. If spores spread, the colonies can easily regrow elsewhere in your home.
  • Mist an EPA-registered antimicrobial to suspend and kill mold spores.
  • Remove affected building surfaces.
  • Bag and dispose of contaminated materials properly.
  • Treat cavities/underlayment and dehumidify.
  • Abrasively remove dead loose mold.
  • Apply EPA-registered protective sealer.
  • Perform clearance testing.

Remove containment materials.

How is a mold test done?

Mold testing can help identify a mold infestation in your home or business. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of test you want done and the number of samples you request. The national average mold inspection cost is $250-$300. The EPA explains that if you have a visible mold problem, in most cases sampling and testing is unnecessary. However, if you have unexplained and potential mold-related illness or can smell mold in your house, mold inspection costs may be a good investment. To avoid unscrupulous testers, the EPA recommends working with a testing agency that adheres to the analytical methods laid out by professional organizations such as the American Industrial Hygiene Association or the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of testing done. Prices can also vary, depending on the size of the home, the number of surface areas to be tested, and the extent of the mold infestation. Here are some examples of mold inspection average costs:

  • Swab testing: $200-$300
    • A professional collects a surface swab from a potentially infested area for testing in a lab. Some professionals have concerns about this being the sole test done because it only gathers a small amount of data from a certain area of the house. That’s why it’s frequently done in conjunction with air cell testing.
  • Air cell testing: $250-$350
    • A professional collects an air sample in the home to measure the amount of mold spores in the air. This test is frequently done in conjunction with swab testing to ensure more complete data. Costs are higher for this test because the equipment required of the contractor is more expensive.
  • Both air cell and swab tests provided by the same company: $400-$600.
