Our move crew was Tre, Q (sp), and I think Josh. Movers were very friendly, professional and fast. They were about 20 minutes late for the appointment but called and said they were in traffic and would be 30 minutes late (so net affect, they were early). They had all the tools they needed and took extra care wrapping up my glass front and mirrored furniture with not only the padding they brought, but also left over moving boxes. Unpacking was into a storage facility where they were also very fast and amazing at getting all of my items into a confined space. My bill was exactly as quoted. First three hours at a set price and every additional hour at a set price. Total move took 5 hours with a 45 minute commute from departure location to destination. Only negative of the move was when the movers moved the piano they didn’t put any padding on the floor. The hard wheels of the skate and the weight of the piano put dents in my wood floor all the way to the front door. I would definitely recommend and will likely use them again when I finish moving from my temporary location.

The owner, Carlos, was very prompt in his communications prior to the move. His movers, Orlando and Grady, arrived right on time and worked quickly and efficiently to move my furniture. No damage, no hidden fees, and the overall price was very reasonable. Overall, had about as smooth/good as a moving experience can go as good as moving can go. Will definitely use In and Out Movers for my next move.

The Bellhops were really great guys - prompt, efficient, professional, friendly, strong. Only things not great - the Bellhops movers weren’t in communication with the Bellhops truck and the truck driver didn’t have my number so I nearly had a coronary when they told me there was no truck ... there was, it arrived minutes later. Second thing is that the movers didn’t wrap all the pieces so we had cabinet doors falling open on the stairs. The movers who brought the furniture into the new place had already done one move that day, and it seems they were a little tired and toward the end of that move some of the furniture got banged up a little bit, nothing major. Might be a good idea to find out in advance. Overall great value and a good company that we will use again.

I was overwhelmed with the quality of work Tate movers performed. The accommodated my last minute schedule change, and was on time! They were so professional, and had all the upscale equipment an upscale moving company would use. I had expensive pieces and they treated them like museum pieces. They were so neatly in there uniforms. Everyone they came in contact with during the move where impressed. They were really responsible for the quality of move you receive. I have used a number of companies in the past and from now on Tate will be my moving Co.

Best moving experience I've had. Curtis and team (including Adrian) were fantastic. Beyond being really nice and responsible guys, they were incredibly responsive and professional, which was great because we had several changes all the way up to the day before the move. I was very impressed with how together this company is, considering how new they are. You would think this company had been around for years. We had a cross country (GA to MN) move with a car in tow and two drop off locations at the end of the trip and they had all the correct documents we needed right away (e.g., insurance for both vehicle/tow and transit and contents of the move, contract, etc). They were also very quick but CAREFUL. I have had many bad experiences with movers thinking the only thing that matters is time (since that is the only thing that may matter to them when there is a flat rate). With some other movers I've used, they don't read box labels or rush through moving fragile furniture and then leave before you can even notice they've damaged everything. With HH, everything was handled with care including the house we were moving from and (very small) apartment we were moving to, and very importantly, the truck was packed very thoughtfully. It was a larger truck that was only half full, but everything was tied down and stored to protect each item and its neighbors. This may sound like common sense, but when you have movers that are tight on time and the move is taking longer than thought (which this one did), things end up just getting thrown on the truck without much thought and that's where stuff gets damaged. As Curtis explained to me, you get a completely different level of care and consideration when you have movers who are their company (Curtis is the owner). It is their reputation and their dollar if a customer is unhappy or something gets damaged. And yes, they are priced very fairly - about a third of what two movers and truck would charge you and in line with other smaller companies. I hope this review helps convince someone else to go with HH - again they are newer so don't have a huge online footprint, but this is a real review from a real very satisfied customer (beware of people on google who post phony, reviews for pay, there are a lot out there). Will be posting this same review on u-Haul's website. I couldn't recommend this company more!

I was very grateful to the movers who went over and above what they were initially hired to do. I was, however, disappointed that several of my furniture pieces were damaged and a box of family heirloom pottery was broken. I realize these things happen in any move, but still was a bit of a heartbreak.

These guys were quick to respond. They had competitive prices which were lower than several others I contacted. They had all the right equipment to move a baby grand without any risk to the instrument or the movers. At the destination they set it up exactly the way I wanted it. Their knowledge of pianos also gave me insight on how to clean and keep my piano beautiful and enjoyable. They were happy to answer all my many questions. It was a pleasure doing business with such professional experts in this business. I would highly recommend them for moving any piano anywhere!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.
