Excellent. Doug came out on the same day we contacted him and gave an estimate, which was very fair. Doug's crew was very good. They pressure washed the house, gutter and deck, caulked, and repaired some wood rot, before painting the entire house and staining the deck. The crew showed up on time everyday and never seemed to stop working. They were polite and courteous and easy to work with. Most importantly, they cleaned up the job site before leaving everyday. All in all, an excellent job at a fair price. We will hire rgSmith Painting to do our interior work as well. Thanks Doug!

Deck update went well. Finished on schedule, and cooperative relative to my leaving for spouse not doing well. I will keep his name for late summer chores.

We had Final Touch Painting paint our den and 1/2 bath. Not only was Tracey prompt each day, but she did an excellent job on these two rooms. She was very neat and we would highly recommend her and Final Touch. In fact, we liked her work so much that we are going to have her power wash and stain our deck. 😄

The Art of Home Improvement replaced the roof on our house in Rome. We are completely happy and very satisfied with our new roof, all the way around – quality of workmanship, materials, labor, value, communication, thoroughness, and care and clean-up of our property. Ray's bid was based on data that he used that is specific to our older home. His bid was accurate, thorough and fair. Very professional! When Ray and I met early on to first discuss the roof replacement, he offered many options concerning construction and shingle types. He explained up front what the entire job would entail from beginning to end. Our home is in the historic district, and is nearly 80 years old. Ray updated the old venting system with new ridge vents, which will lower heating and cooling bills, new drip edge and new flashing all around. Ray left shingle samples with us, and we were able to hold the sample up to our cedar shingle siding, in order to choose the right color shingle. We were considering a light color which would not have looked good on our home at all, but when we were able to compare a sample next to our siding, we realized how a darker, slate color was the perfect choice. It looks great! Ray kept in contact with us prior to beginning the job. If I had a question or concern, Ray returned my calls or emails promptly. He made it clear that he is available anytime if I have a concern following completion. All is good. The crew was great! All are very nice young people. I have done some roofing in my younger days, and I can they know what they are doing. Ray and his crew worked hard, non-stop, all day to complete the job. They covered the driveway, our plants and shrubs and our deck with tarps to protect them. No plant was damaged, and our deck looks as good as always. Clean up was extremely thorough. They cleaned the gutters, swept up and picked up any small shingle materials, and then they used magnets and a magnetic roller to pick up stray roofing nails that may have missed the tarps. We have had no nail issues. Ray even left a large magnet wand with us, so that when the dumpster was hauled away the following morning, I could use it to pick up nails and metal debris that may have been under the dumpster, or had fallen out when they winched the dumpster up to the truck. Ray is a nice man, and it was a pleasure to do business with The Art of Home Improvement. Ray was on time with each and every appointment, start time and completion time that he gave us. Ray returned each and every communication with us in a very timely manner. The Art of Home Improvement’s customer service is top notch! We love our new roof! Our house looks great!! The quality of construction, the warranties for construction and materials, and the pleasant experience we had working with Ray and The Art of Home Improvement are all 5 star!! If you are looking for a good roofing company, which is friendly, reliable, does great work at a great price, and keeps its commitments, then I would not hesitate to choose The Art of Home Improvement for the job. Thank you.

Shane and his assistant repaired by deck to the specifications that we wanted. All the repair work was completed in one day and a few weeks later he completed the job by spraying my deck with clear waterproof. Overall, I'm happy with the work he and his assistant did.

This gentleman rebuilt the back deck, installed kitchen and bathroom floors, completed trim, demoed, and hauled away the debris. He returned the following week to install new toilets in both bathrooms not to mention gave me some pointers on how to upkeep the newly installed items. (With my luck) I had to have the electrical pannel in my home replaced and he came out after regular business hours to assist the family with our needs! Hands down, he's my go to guy before I call anyone. He's gained our trust and his work speaks for itself. Thanks Marcus!

They put a deck on my basement level. They came on time and had job completed that evening. They also repair the main gate on my privacy fence. They cleaned the entire work site and even stack some bricks I had scattered on the back yard. I am really please with the deck. I will have them come back for other jobs.

Lamar gets a 4 out of 5. He gave me an immediate estimate and started work the next day. Front 8x8 entry deck and a 3 x 4 stair off the garage. Lamar knows his flashing. That separates the pro's from the hobby men. He laid the boards flush - I know some guys use a penny nail for separation - we never talked about that and he didn't router. 98% of the boards didn't require router but it's a nice touch. The flashing was still a big deal... It makes all the difference. And Lamar was affordable versus the work he did. I think I got him a little on the back stairs - but overall it was pro work for a resale house. Yes I would recommend Lamar and I will hire him again if needed.

We recently hired Dan and his team to demo an old existing wooden deck and construct a newer, larger one in our backyard. We are very pleased. Dan responded to my thumbtack request immediately and we met within days to get an estimate. He was able to offer us a much larger more ornate structure than other quotes at a more reasonable price. He has many employees so you must be flexible with different people working in your space when they are available but it worked well for us because our project was outdoors. Everyone was friendly, hard working and their priority was our satisfaction. Dan is friendly, and super communicative and will let you know what is happening when etc. Dan designed a creative layout for us that was perfect and used thick posts and sturdy construction making our deck look great. We are very happy. We will not hesitate to use Dan and his team again for future projects. Hire with confidence.

Jeremy came out and quoted two decks at my home. I decided to do the work myself with a friend. Although, I did not hire his company to do the work. Jeremy was responsive, timely, professional, knowledgeable and the quote was fair. Even though he did not do work for me I can tell if he did, the job would have been well done and professional.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
