Scott was very knowledgeable. He provided an accurate, over-the-phone estimate that was much lower than other brand name moving companies that provided in-home estimates. The crew was prompt, professional and worked hard to make the experience as easy as possible. I do want to add a friendly note of advice for others based on our experience. We were well-prepared for our in-town move. We rented a truck and moved most of our boxes and light pieces of furniture the week before our "official move." I believe that eliminated any surprises for the crew that could have easily increased length and price of the move.

This was a last minute, desperate need for help. We had to move some furniture for a rental unit with new family coming in. I originally hired Faith Moving Company, who were very helpful, but I needed an early morning slot. Big Deal showed up right on time, which was critical, and got an hour and a half's worth of moving done in under an hour. They were flexible, prompt, and extremely nice. Both Big Deal and Faith Moving will be my go to movers from here on out.

I have moved over 10 times and have never had a pleasant experience with a moving company until working with Team Movers. They were on time and got my small job done in well under and hour. They are extremely professional and courteous, and I will be recommending them to everyone I know from now on. Their rates are also extremely competitive, and if you are looking for a mover, look no further. These guys are the BEST.

Ronnie and his team performed as he had promised, efficiently. Some moving companies try to milk the clock so to speak, but Aikens Movers were consistently moving, taking the upmost care with my furniture. Ronnie made suggestions that were very helpful and saved me time and effort. I’m quite happy with the service I received and I highly recommend this company. I’ll be using them again in the future! And you should too.

Nice boys had a flat rate for up to five hours but some how got another hour tacked on cost wise but overall very happy... So greatful for the speed of the move. Others moving companies seem to drag out the time. I think he flat rate is a good way to go if you can guess the time you hi knit will take.

I highly recommend MyPorter for your moving needs, they completely exceeded my expectations when it came to my recent move (4/30/18)! I hate moving but have unfortunately have had to make several over the past few years. I've never had a terribly negative experience with past movers, per se, but I had just started to assume companies generally under-quoted moving costs initially and you would end up paying more in the end. MyPorter changed my perception of moving companies completely, they actually beat my quoted time by a full hour! My movers were efficient and professional and I cannot thank them enough for their help!

There is no shortage of moving companies. But what separates Pick Up Movers from the pack is their sincerity and reliability factor. They really showed a lot of care while moving my belongings. They showed up on time and packed up everything very fast. I only instructed them a little and they listened to every word of mine. The van pulled up at my new house right on schedule and all my valuables were safe. That is just superb! I will definitely hire them again.

I was overall very pleased with Helping Hands for my recent full service packing and moving. My initial estimate was very thorough and the final cost ended up being as good or better than the other moving companies that I reviewed.. The packers surprised me by showing up with a 3rd packer (I was told there would be 2) they were able to pack the house in an hour less than was quoted. Curtis and his crew did an amazing job on the actual move from Atlanta to Dallas,TX. Everyone was quick, careful, and thorough, and Curtis did a great job leading the team (sounded a bit like a drill sergeant!). They did an excellent job protecting all of my furniture, and I had no broken items and all of the furniture was put back together in the new house exactly as it was in the old place. I would use them again in the future and would recommend them to anyone.

I was extremely impressed with the professionalism, seriousness and quality of work provided by Mike and his team. It was outstanding. I hired them to move me from Georgia to Texas. From the day I requested the service uptil the day they arrived in Texas with my things, Mike kept in contact all the way. The aspect that blew me away was the fact that I completely forgot to make arrangements to move my car and in a panic the night before, I called Mike to ask if he knew any car moving companies that could assist. I had tried calling a few car movers and they all told me it would take about 2wks for pick up. That obviously would not work since I was leaving in less than 24hrs. That night I called him, Mike made arrangements for a dolly so they could hitch my car with the moving van. The car was loaded unto the dolly so no miles were put on the car. It was a drastically cheaper option than hiring a car mover for $850. It took them less than 3hrs to load up the truck in Georgia and about the same time to unload my things in Texas. The car and everything arrived safely. Outstanding honest courteous service and I would definitely have them move me again and again.

Highly recommend. They don't waste your time and are very up front about pricing and what they offer. Arrived on time and worked very hard and fast. Moved everything safely, reassembled anything they had to disassemble for the move, and offered to arrange furniture how I wanted. They won't try to nickel and dime you or exploit you like a lot of the bigger corporate moving companies. If I ever need to move in the metro area again I won't waste any time looking anywhere else.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
