We put in a call to Jermaine this morning, he came out within 1 hour. Our air conditioner was not preforming appropriately. Jermaine reported we also had condensation built up due to lack of Freon. He fixed the situation quickly and professionally, at a fair price. We will use him in the future. Thank you again Jermaine!

This was a great experience, Replaced my central air conditioner, Mr. Hasan was Spectacular, He was extremely knowledgeable and professional. He listened to my needs and didn't try to sell me anything I didn't need. arrived on time and kept me up to date on the progress of the install. They left my house as clean as it was when they arrived. Overall I am extremely satisfied with their work. I will recommend him to everyone I know. If I was to rate Mr. Hassan at a scale of 0 to 10, I will give him 20, He is just an amazingly fantastic person.

I posted that my air conditioner was broken at 9:50pm and by 10pm had a response from Mr. White at E & W Heating and cooling. He committed to coming to my house at 8am the following day; and was there exactly at 8. By 10:30 am he had replaced the motor, capacitor and added freon. I couldn't have been happier!!!

I highly recommend Ross for all of your air conditioner needs. He promptly responded to all of my messages, he was able to provide same day service, and he kept me informed of the process every step of the way. I needed ALOT of freon in both of my units, and Ross filled up both units at a discounted rate. His ability to work within my budget was greatly appreciated, and his excellent service is the reason why I'll definitely hire him again for any a/c maintenance and/or repair.

I seriously never write reviews, but in this case I just had to- I hired Miguel and mike to install an oven/microwave combo and a has cooktop in a house that I am flipping and putting on the market. It's not only that they were extremely reasonably priced, on time, and got the job done correctly, those are the basics that you would normally expect- but I was a bit worried about the size and things not fitting- they told me, hey don't worry, we'll get this done and done right. They had to do some extra work to make sure it fit correctly in the cabinet space - instead of throwing their hands in the air and saying, sorry, they took the extra time to come up with a solution.....and oh, they didn't charge me any thing extra for the extra time. They really care about the final product, their workmanship and their customers satisfaction. I have flipped several houses in the past and never had ANY contractor be as dedicated to a single small job and truly care about doing a great job. My only problem is that they do any of the other trades I need!!! Hire these guys and you won't be sorry! 6 out 5 stars.

Buck was great in responding on very short notice. But when it's in the heat of summer and making the time to come out to repair the air conditioner his company saved the day at a very fair price. We will be using Buck going forward with annual maintenance needs. You will not be disappointed hiring Buck for your HVAC needs.

They arrived at exactly the appointed time. They replaced my overflow pump for my air conditioner and then told me why it burnt out. The reason was someone installed 3/8 instead of 1/2 flow tubing for the water to flow out. The smaller tube made the pump work harder. They gave me a price to replace the tube and even though it took 4 hours instead the one hour they thought, they did not charge for the overtime. These guys are great and did not try and rip me off. Great prices and very courtesy. They are the best. I normally do not write reviews but with these guys, I had!!

Good communication, very knowledgeable, and did clean high quality work (I'm a retired plumber and know what clean work looks like--there's a difference). Most importantly, Jack is trustworthy. I know this for a fact because another HVAC contractor (from Thumbtack) came out and quoted me $1,800 for this same repair. The guy said my two year old air handler must be replaced, the lines needed to be acid washed, many many pounds of expensive coolant would be needed to charge the new system, etc. Basically, it was the typical scammer sales pitch contractors notoriously use to raise costs-- "everything is broken and must be replaced", when in reality, it's a simple fix. In stark contrast to this other contractor, Jack was honest and only replaced what truly needed replacing. He did the whole job for just $239! You read correctly: another Thumbtack contractor $1,800, Jack $239. What's more, when it turned out my system needed an extra pound of coolant (not much), and it cost a little more than his original estimate (an estimate given sight unseen from email); Jack looked like someone ran over his puppy as he gave me the news. Clearly, this is a contractor who does not enjoy up-charging anyone. In a market filled is lazy scammers, it's refreshing to come across this young man who takes pride in his work and truly cares about giving people honest value.

Lanier HVAC's response to our service call was very prompt. Within 3 hours a professional service tech was at our location looking at the unit. This was our first time using Lanier HVAC and also the first time we have ever gotten a same day service call response. They ordered the necessary parts in a timely fashion and got our furnace up and running in less than 24 hours from our initial service call. I would highly recommend Lanier HVAC to anyone in need of heating & air service or replacement. Their service is very prompt, customer service is excellent, and their prices are considerably lower than the competition.

Richard was GREAT! He came the same day my air conditioner stopped working. He was very efficient. He gave us a fair price. We have an older system. Richard did NOT try to get us to make unnecessary repairs. Richard was very knowledgeable. He thoroughly explained the problems with our unit. His very detailed explanation showed he has a passion for his trade. Richard's customer service, professionalism, and craftsmanship were SUPERB. Not only would I refer him to friends, I would hire him without a second thought. Thank you Richard for giving us cold air in 90 degree weather. We are extremely satisfied with your work

Great service! Yves came out to check my hvac system on the same day that I called. He diagnosed and fixed the problem with ease. I am so grateful because another company erroneously stated that I would have to replace my system, which obviously wasn't true. Thanks again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
