Scott arrived as promised and fixed the plumbing dilemma I was having. The work was done professionally and he explained everything to me every step of the way. The bathroom was cleaned up and put back together. I was a bit disappointed in the price. I felt it was a bit high for the amount of work, but the job was completed as I expected. I have Scott doing another job for me in the near future and would highly recommend him if you are looking for an all around handyman. He knows his stuff from talking to him about other jobs around the house.

Ben Goheen, the "Neighborhood Plumber," is one of those professionals whose card you keep at the top of the stack and never lose. He was recommended by a good electrician we've used, and has done excellent work for us at our home in Lithonia, Georgia. Most recently, he came over right away when we saw what looked like leaking from a main floor bathroom into the lower level drop ceiling. He was able to diagnose the problem quickly, something no one in the house (including the previous owner) had done before, and helped us take care of it very economically. He explained everything he did as well. As if that wasn't enough, my wife discovered leaking in the lower level kitchen, and it got worse. She called Ben late in the evening, and he came by early the next morning. The problem was a sewage pump clog, and once again Ben worked his magic and fixed it. He also took a trip to Home Depot to get a fan and humidifier for us (we'd have been pretty useless on the trip) and set them up. I think this is 4 or 5 jobs that Ben's taken care of now, and all of them extremely well. Add in a friendly and professional approach, and you have a star.

Brian did what he said he would do, when he said he would do it, at the agreed upon price. He was a pleasure to work with and I would not hesitate to use him in the future. The part I needed to keep my tankless hot-water heater from freezing was apparently quite difficult to install. I called several other plumbers and it was obvious that they really didn't have experience in that area. When I called Brian, he immediately explained what needed to be done and how the part worked. He ordered the part after we agreed upon the price, and kept me informed through Thumbtack of it's status. When received, Brian called and we agreed upon a date and time to install the part. He was early, had all the materials needed, did the work, showed me what he did and how it functioned, tested the water heater, and cleaned the area. I strongly recommend Graham Plumbing and trust Brian.

Ephraim is the best plumber I have met. He was professional, flexible with his time and most of all extremely knowledgeable. I had hired two other plumbers through Home Warranty before him. Both came and did some work but not actually fix the root cause. Ephraim was able to determine the root cause of the problem and changed the pressure regulator valve to fix the problem. His price was reasonable. I would never use anyone else again for any plumbing work. I completely trust and highly recommend him. Thanks Ephraim!

To put the facts straight , this is the 1st time I used thumbtrack for my plumbing needs . Last night around 9pm , sharkbite connector broke in my front yard . I got online and looked for plumbers closeby since this is an emergency . Hunter kemp was the 1st plumber who contacted me at midnight and helped me turn off the main. He came out 1st thing in the morning around 8am to come fix it for me at a really great price . And the work he did is top class . I highly recommend him . Kemp , really appreciate your help .

He is the BEST plumber/handyman I have ever seen ! I had a plumbing issue in my master bath that 2-3 plumbers had come taken a look at and said they needed parts or some such and that I would essentially have to buy a new fixture. But Mr Johnson not only fixed the issue saving me a ton of money in buying the fixtures -- he also fixed it in 20 minutes or less! My microwave fan was sounding like a helicopter when turned on and Mr Johnson once again fixed it so I didn't have to get a new built in microwave. He is worth every penny you pay - he does the work super fast and fixes your problems coz he knows his stuff. Price is also very reasonable for the kind of experience he has. TOTALLY WILL HIRE again.

I needed a toilet replaced. I ordered mine online though Amazon. Unfortunately, they were missing a few screws necessary to install the toilet. This plumber was so flexible and helpful, he came back later that week when I received the replacement part from the manufacturer w/o charging me extra! We'll definitely use him again!

If you want the job done right without worries--use CLD. I recently purchased a home in Atlanta. I have used 3 different plumbers and been very disappointed. I was giving up hope I could find a reliable/honest plumber but Larry changed everything. He was responsive, helpful, he communicated with me. He offered quality work at a very responsible price. He showed up when he said he would. He preformed the work at the price quoted. He even used copper piping instead of the pvc to eliminate any future issues. He could have just used pvc but he is a quality person. He sent me photos of the attic work. I couldn't be happier. I would recommend his services to everyone! Thank you again Larry for helping out a panicked woman with a ceiling leak.

We spoke with Andy after getting a few quotes from other plumbers. We knew that we needed our toilet to be removed so that the main line could be snaked. After discussing the issue he gave us an extremely fair quote, and even came out to perform the work that evening, without any emergency upcharge. He arrived within two hours of our phone call and quickly diagnosed the best method to fix our issue. He didn't have any surprise fees, his work was fast, and he is extremely professional. He even went above and beyond - when he was reseating our toilet, he noticed that the flap in the back was worn and offered to replace it free of charge. After working with other plumbers who didn't fix the issue or quoted us prices almost double what we paid with Andy, it was refreshing to have someone work with us who was straightforward and competent. I would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone who needs plumbing work done.

What a great company to deal with. I've used them now on 3 different projects. The first was a bathroom remodel. The work was completed ahead of schedule and I have a beautiful bathroom now. It was so nice to have a worker who cleaned up after himself everyday, never leaving a mess behind.

Joe the Plumber saved the day!! I had a water leak coming from the main water line. I searched for plumbing services for nearly 3 days and no one was willing to help. Once I spoke to Joe, things finally started moving in the right direction. He showed up to my residence on time and provided a reasonable estimate within 15 minutes. After I electronically approved his services, he began working immediately. He completely replaced the water line and noticed other improvements I should consider. After completion, I made another appointment for other plumbing repairs. Joe will not let down!!

Mason was punctual and a true professional. He took pride in is his work and did a great job. We recently went through a bathroom renovation and we were pleased with the final product, however, the overall experience was very taxing on my wife and I. They missed deadlines, people wouldn’t show up on time, etc. We are in a condo and that comes with a lot of rules/regulations. Mason followed all condo rules as instructed. It was such a relief to have someone show up on time and get the job done. His work is fantastic, he seems to be a detailed oriented individual. I’d recommend him to any of my friends, family members, and neighbors. Due to previous leaks and age, our ceilings and walls are not level. Despite these structural issues, Mason made our crown molding look brilliant. Fantastic job! I would hire him again.

I hired Andy to do some electrical work with hanging a light fixture in my closet where I was not certain the breaker for that closest ceiling had been successfully disconnected from my main circuit breaker for the house. He was very personable and prefessional at diagnosing the issue, and was quite skillful in getting everything installed and tested within only a matter of minutes. While he was at my home he went beyond the service I had hired him for, and helped me with figuring out a plumbing issue I was having as well. I plan to hire him again as soon as I'm ready to upgrade my bathroom faucets! I highly recommend his services!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
