We had a wonderful dinner. The servers and chef were all very professional and we enjoyed crafting a menu that fit our specific needs. The brisket sliders were a BIG hit with our family. (As was the chocolate/peanutbutter cake... outstanding!). THANK YOU!

I was very unsure of booking a caterer online without even tasting her food. I chose Nikki because she had great reviews and when I talked with her she was very nice and professional. Our son's rehearsal dinner was last Friday night. The food was wonderful! Nikki packaged the meal so that those who wanted certain items could add them and our picky son, the groom, was able to enjoy everything also. Everyone commented on the great food and wanted to know who the caterer was. Nikki was quick to respond to all my emails and phone calls. Chef Shawn, who delivered the food, was very prompt and friendly. Thanks Nikki for a wonderful experience.

Our office hired John to make dinners for us and our families during busy tax season. It has been great! The meals have all been delicious and varied while still being kid friendly. We never get bored with his food. He brings the meals twice a week, and he and his assistant are always on time and very helpful. John is super attentive to our different diet needs/allergies and welcomes suggestions. The food looks and tastes fresh and is very health conscious. Exactly what we asked for. We have worked with other chefs in the past and none have been as wonderful as John. Our whole office highly recommends him.

Marcus and Devon did a fantastic job. We had a post game hot meal. The game was delayed due to weather so the meal was served 90 minutes later than expected. It was all still fresh and delicious. I highly recommend Pas de Deux. Talented chefs and service with a smile.

Chef David has been to my house more than a dozen times over the past two years to prepare food for my dinner parties. He is always on time, the quality of the ingredients is exceptional, the food is always delicious and he does all the serving and clean up! David has a witty personality and always charms the guest while serving each course. He is truly a joy to have in my home and I will continue to have David prepare meals whether it be for my casual or elegant dinner parties.

I hired PCF Creations for two 1-month periods to prepare Whole30 compliant meals for my wife and me. Chef Josue came like clockwork every Monday to prepare meals for the entire week. He was very clean, friendly, and gentle. His cooking is precise; flavors are gently pronounced and create harmony with subtones and nuances. I am pretty good in the kitchen myself so I needed this execution to be impressive, despite the somewhat limited ingredients allowed (again, whole30 program, which we also narrowed down a lot based on our likings). Chef Josue was very clean and fast. He also made the grocery shopping for us in a very effective way. I would recommend his services to anyone looking to improve diet or simply for a celebration meal. Very happy.

Fantastic job by Cupid's Pantry from beginning to end! The Thumbtack website is user friendly and Chef Chenoa responded right away to a short notice proposal for my wife's 50th Birthday Party (I'm a terrible procrastinator). She was very enjoyable to work with ironing out the details leading up to the party and the party itself was a smash hit with 20 of our friends and family. Chef Samantha nailed our Buckhead Beef tenderloin and other food highlights were the crawfish etouffee and the two tier chocolate and coconut individual birthday cakes - several people said it was the best they've ever had. Chenoa had great ideas, one of them being flower arrangements for each table and on her own came up with 50 roses for the arrangements- what a nice touch. When it came time for post dinner and clean up by Cupid's Pantry, I swear they did it in the blink of an eye. One minute there were a lot of dishes, glasses, etc. and I was visiting with my guests - the next minute, poof! all cleaned up! I cannot recommend Chenoa and Cupid's Pantry highly enough. Thanks for making my wife's 50th a truly special night!!!

Anyone from below the Mason Dixon line knows just how important it is to have a homemade red velvet cake for Christmas. After hearing great things about Better Than Granny, I decided to order a red velvet cake for my family gathering. Not only was I impressed by the taste of the cake, I was pleased with the presentation. I could tell the cake had been made with patience and passion. I was also impressed that it was hand-delivered by the chef himself. Trey Winfrey is an artist in the kitchen and I would recommend him to anyone who enjoys great-tasting and well-presented food.

I can’t say enough good things about my experience with Chef Toni. I recently travelled to Georgia (by way of the West Coast) to visit some girlfriends. As a special treat to ourselves, we decided to have Chef Toni come and cook us dinner. We were referred to her by a friend who she had just taught a cooking class to the week before, and boy are we glad we were! Let me just say that Toni’s warmth and talent are truly unmatched. We had asked for a chicken dish as a main course, and were open to her suggestion. Upon further discussion, Toni created a wonderful three course menu for us. The main course being Chicken Francese! Toni proposed a fresh Caprese salad to start, which was followed by our main dish, the Chicken Francese! This lemony dish was served over a bed of quinoa and brown rice, and let’s just say ... I licked my plate clean. To finish, was a Georgia staple .. Peach Pie!! I love that she tied in a southern element to the menu (as I’m not as lucky to have such delicious peaches over in California)! I wish I had gotten a photo of the pie, but admittedly, we started digging right in the second the pie was cooled 😳. From start to finish, we were not only salivating over the sensational smells that we’re coming from the kitchen, but smiling from ear to ear at Toni’s humor, heart, and most of all her undeniable talent. My only regret is that I don’t live closer so I could have the treat that is Chef Toni all the time!! However, I can now look forward to our new tradition, dinner by Chef Toni. I’m already planning my next trip back!!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
