I had a really great experience with Sick Building Group. Anthony and his associate came right over when I called, and were able to start immediately on a time-sensitive project. Anthony explained every aspect of the process to me, so that I felt well-informed about what I was paying for. He did a beautiful job of transforming my sick crawl space back into a clean, healthy environment. His associate, Brent, did the restoration work, and he was quite the perfectionist. The tile that he laid on the new floor looks absolutely fantastic. I feel that Sick Builders went beyond the call of duty to get the job done, working evenings, and making themselves available after hours to answer my questions. Anthony gave me a nice discount to make the job affordable, and gave me a little bit of time to pay it off. Nobody wants to pay for mold removal, but If you have to do it, Anthony and Sick builders are the people to call.

Charles was great to work with. His work quality was fantastic and he was very accommodating with our crazy schedules. We are very happy with the finished product. He custom built a hall tree/storage for our front entrance and made it look as though it was part of the house. We would definitely recommend Charles.

This was our first experience working through Thumbtack. Alan replied right away and he offered us a very fair quote for his services. He came in for the visit and told us exactly how he would do his work and the time frame. He did an excellent job. We just had had new wooden floors put in and he made sure that there was not a single speck of paint on the floor. Very professional, very clean work. Did his job quietly and efficiently. I would recommend him for any work that other people might have.

Christian Brother Remodeling did truly EXCELLENT work on my home. I needed a whole lot of work done on my house (siding, carpentry, paint, etc.) within a very tight time and budget constraint. They were professional, trustworthy (I had to work while my home was being repaired), went above and beyond my expectations. They provided daily status reports along with photos so that I could see the progress being made. I can't say enough good about this contractor. The cost was incredibly reasonable. The work quality was outstanding. I give them my highest recommendation.

This is my first time sharing a view on a public site. However, I had to share my experience. My husband and I decided to have our home painted, (after 11 years). We decided we'd also like to have the roof replaced, and we wanted 1 company to do it all. I received several estimates. However, I decided to go with Ray at The Art of Home Improvement because he was so reassuring and knowledgeable about the entire process. He and his team did an EXCELLENT job, and I am quite picky. They were totally professional and their price included pressure washing, sealing all of the cracks, hauling away. Ray was so meticulous and detailed with the painting. My home is beautiful and so many stop by to compliment us on the color. The team left no stone unturned. Spring is such a perfect time to schedule a new paint job. I am so grateful that we found a trustworthy and efficient company to get the work done. I highly recommend this company. Integrity and excellence are priceless. I must add that his prices were quite competitive and you will love working with him. I know that there are a lot of painters and roofers out there, but include his company in on the bidding process. You will not be disappointed!

If I had to sum up my experience with Mr. Pernell in two words: professional and trustworthy. Mr. Pernell demonstrated a level of quality, communication, and professionalism that exceeded my expectations and spoke volumes of his value as a contractor. He wrote an initial email response to a quote request with a professional candor while addressing my specific repair needs. Mr. Pernell arrived appropriately early and assessed the drywall repair, including a specific plan of action and cost. After we approved the amount, he set to work right away and completed the repair quickly, efficiently, and with utmost attention to detail. I have hired many handymen and contractors in the past, and without question, Mr. Pernell is the best I have encountered or hired. It is not often that you find an honest contractor who delivers quality and timely work on budget. I encourage you to consider this company for future projects. You will be just as impressed as I am. Feel free to contact me for a reference anytime.

Douglas Painting provided great value for the price. I selected Douglas over several other bids due to their responsiveness and estimate. The estimate was about average after I rejected a couple bids that were about twice as high. I needed this project completed by Thanksgiving, and Douglas and his crew scheduled their work on the weekend to get it completed on time. I removed wall hangings and electrical wall plates. They moved furniture, repaired minor defects on the surfaces and taped and covered before painting. I was concerned about paint drips, especially from the ceilings, but there were none. The cut line between the ceilings and the walls were very precise and clean. They completed the job (five rooms) in about eight hours. Walk through after the job was easy because there were no discrepancies! They were courteous and diligent throughout the project. Douglas painting is definitely on my re-hire list for future projects.

Rafael and team are great. I needed to quickly turn over a beat up rental property, and they were available immediately. They did great painting work and had a team that stayed late into the night to complete the large job in one day. They also helped with other repairs ranging from electric work, carpentry, and deep cleaning service at great value!

Tom tiled three bathrooms, one laundry room and replaced my old back splash in my kitchen. He did outstanding work! He had to custom cut every singel tile for the backsplash - 60 square feet of tile. He really improved the appearance of our kitchen. He also remodeled our guest bathroom. He was going to tear out the existing outdated tile shower. However, since the shower was in such good shape, he recommended keeping it and just tile the floor and stoop of the shower. He painted the bathroom with two colors that tiled it all together. In addition, he installed bead board and trimmed it out. Excellent wood worker and painter too. I would highly recommend him!

Mr. Selvin and Ms. Mercedes came to give me an estimate the next day I had contacted them letting them know I required an interior/exterior painter. They were very nice people, they gave me a very reasonable price and were able to finish the job within the week. I would recommend their work, but more importantly the attention they showed me as a customer.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
