This is the first time I'm giving someone 5 star review prior to the completion of the job. I have an old/discontinued water heater, an unusual issue. Jontell has been very honest throughout the process and gained my trust. We're still configuring the issue with my heater but I feel comfortable to count on him. He helped me understand that my heater is an old unit and the part has to be on special order. He even came out to my place after hours to ensure hot water is temporarily up and running for me. When it comes to this type of services, I've encountered too many people who just wanted to take the money and not follow through. However, Jontell has been very professional and honest with me. The part to fix my water heater has been ordered and Jontell ensured he will do the installation again at no cost. I understand unusual situation like this happens in this business. We're dealing with electrical and sometimes it's just out of human's hands. However, I'm confident to count on Jontell to complete this job. No wonder he has over 100 positive reviews! He sure will have my future business as well as references to my friends. If you are looking for a knowledgeable, honest plumber who won't scam you and get the job done, you've got the right person here!

Brian did what he said he would do, when he said he would do it, at the agreed upon price. He was a pleasure to work with and I would not hesitate to use him in the future. The part I needed to keep my tankless hot-water heater from freezing was apparently quite difficult to install. I called several other plumbers and it was obvious that they really didn't have experience in that area. When I called Brian, he immediately explained what needed to be done and how the part worked. He ordered the part after we agreed upon the price, and kept me informed through Thumbtack of it's status. When received, Brian called and we agreed upon a date and time to install the part. He was early, had all the materials needed, did the work, showed me what he did and how it functioned, tested the water heater, and cleaned the area. I strongly recommend Graham Plumbing and trust Brian.

Fred was the first one to respond to my request for a hot water heater replacement. He took the time to explain what I needed to do to stop the water from continuing to flood the garage. He also explained what I needed to know to purchase the right water heater for replacement (height, width, etc). He gave me information on what causes water heaters to deteriorate and how to minimize that in the future (by draining the water heater at least annually). Fred came over immediately to start the water heater removal process and went to Home Depot with me to assist me in purchasing a new one and all the components that were needed for the install. It is obvious that Fred is a very knowledgeable and skilled plumber. He did a fantastic job from beginning to end. His pricing was more than reasonable. I would definitely hire Fred again and can also highly recommend him as a first choice for your plumbing needs.

Jim did a great job installing our new water heater. His price was reasonable. He advised us what we would need for the installation, such as an expansion tank, which we had never heard of, but is required on new heater installations. He worke non stop till the job was completed. I would recommend Jim to anyone needed this type work done.

Very good experience with replacement of my tankless hot water heater. Phil completed the job on Sunday but spent several hours tracking down the product on Saturday - driving over 4 hours round trip to pick up the main part. He provided ETA updates so I knew exactly when to expect him. His work was very neat, cleaned up after himself and was very comfortable with him inside (and outside) my home. Finally, his pricing for the work was extremely reasonable. I will use him for any future plumbing work.

Mr DeNeale was extremely responsive with our water heater replacement request. I had a 20 year leaking tank and he was able to replace it and install it within a day. He is extremely professional and extremely fair with his pricing. I knew that sooner or later the tank needed to be replaced due to its age. But once I saw the leak, I knew that it needed to be replaced right away. I just wish I would have done it a few years ago. I did not know how much an old water heater can actually affect the amount of water pressure. Very happy with my experience. Give him a shot.

"LOOK NO FURTHER KEITH IS SECOND TO NONE" His work looks like a million dollars but it's no where near that, it's very affordable, it's some truth in his business name,,,,he should have named the business affordable quality remodeling!! Anyway! Keith installed a gas water heater for me. Let me first say thank God for sending me an angel! I met Keith in October 2015 through Thumbtack when I was looking for someone who would provide me with a quality job at a fair price. The project was my main bathroom. I scheduled an appointment with Keith to give me estimate on remodeling my bathroom. Keith arrived on time, he was professional, most of all he is meticulous and very creative which I love..Right away I knew he was the man for the job. When inspecting and working on the project the quality and the attention Keith gives to detail is unbelievable. I was given a fair price but I needed time to gather the items needed to the project. Keith kept in contact with me as to what my status was. Christmas came and went and I had a few setbacks. I few days ago Keith called to see how thing were going...well I was yet again having another one of my setbacks. I told him my hot water heater had gone out, Keith immediately offered help! He provide me with an affordable price and away to work he went.. there were all kinds of challeges due to some completely horrible work done by an HVAC company in hired to install the heating and air system. Due to these challeges Keith was burnt, poked and he got soak and wet, after jumping through all those hoops we thought the job was almost complete, it was time to light the pilot and the job was done. The pilot wouldn't light, Keith tried again and again until we had to except the hot water heater was damage, after all that hard work he had to uninstall the heater put it back on the truck, take it to the store and them reinstall the hot water heater again. The defected heater was not his fault but he had to reinstall it....so Keith negotiated a deal with the store manager at Lowes, so I did not have to pay him twice for an issue that was not my fault either. As tried as Keith was he did not leave me without hot water for another day so....after taking my nice hot shower, I could not shut my eyes without telling everyone about my angel!! Thanks Keith and Charlie P.S. My house has been totally gutted, it needs alot of work. Thanks Thumbtack, I only need one good man and that's Keith so I will only be back on this site to complete the remodeling of my home, if there something Keith can't do! He is awesome!!

I called Southern Sewer & Drain at the last minute to replace a water heater. They responded quickly, were very professional, and had one of the best prices for services. The new water heater was installed up to code along with an expansion tank and a new PRV. I would definitely use them again. The owner is a certified pro that I would recommend.

Joe did a great job - I live in a high-rise condominium and was very careful on the plumber I hired for the installation of a hot water heater particular because of my living situation with 224 other units in my building. I was impressed with Joe's experience in working on commercial buildings and high-rise buildings as well as traditional homes. Joe was prompt and gave me a courtesy call to let me know he was on his way. Was very pleased. I had previously had a 6 year old hot water explode and flood into a downstairs condominium so I wanted to hire a plumber who was highly qualified and ensure that this wouldn't happen again. The pricing was reasonable and was $300 under a quote I received from a national plumbing firm for the installation of a hot water heater. I give ReelMcCoy Plumbing my highest recommendation.

Nick came out on Wed to diagnose the issue with our old water heater and was able to install a tankless on Thu (the next day). On Monday morning, when we had an issue with the hot water running out, we let DNM know and they were able to squeeze us in the same day and fix the issue. (Lack of water pressure due to low flow showerheads inconsistently triggering the water heater to heat the water.) In the end, it was a minor issue that could have been resolved over the phone. But we appreciate DNM for sending Nick out the same day and fixing the issue. It was much appreciated.

We endorse and recommend Marcus without any hesitation for his skills and integrity. Marcus installed a new water heater, replacing the old one that leaked. He responded quickly on Thumbtack and was at our house within hours after we've agreed on the job and estimate. The old water heater was smaller than most of the currently available models and installed in a drawer with limited space. Marcus helped to pick a model that would fit and procured it. He completed all re-piping and came to our house twice, since some of the pipes needed extra attention. Marcus personally cared about getting the job done the way he committed and at the agreed price, even if it took more effort on his side due to unexpected issues. Marcus also assessed the flood damage and provided a quote to repair floor at second level and ceiling at first level. We are looking forward to having him work on our house for that.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.

How much does it cost to install a tankless hot water heater?

Tankless water heaters usually cost more to install than traditional tanks, because many homes need to be retrofitted to accommodate the new system. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $150 and $1,200, and tankless natural gas water heaters retail between $200 and $1,300 on average. The lower prices ($150-$250) are generally for point-of-use tankless heaters that can be installed to boost hot water in high-demand areas such as the bathroom or kitchen sink. Tankless water heaters designed to heat whole homes usually start under $300 at the low end and go up to $1,400 or more. Pricing for whole-home varies with the heater’s technology and features. Nationally, standard water heater installation costs average $360-$780, but tankless water heater installation costs may range from $400 to $1,000, depending on the work needed. Some perks of tankless water heaters are that they have nearly double the life expectancy of traditional water heaters and are generally more cost-efficient. Homeowners may be able to save $100 or more per year on their utility bills with an Energy Star approved tankless heater, depending on how much hot water they use.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
