I've written a few books and have worked with many editors over the years. I needed assistance on two novels that were edited but needed proofreading. Brittany went above and beyond on the proofreading, with a quick turnaround time. Her comments and corrections went deeper than simple proofreading and helped me understand the corrections and become a better writer. My manuscript was completely polished and publication-ready when she was finished. I'm looking forward to working with Brittany on my next book for both editing and proofreading. I HIGHLY recommend her for all of your editing needs, as she is exceptionally skilled and has a firm understand of grammar and the written word! You won't be disappointed with her work!

To Whom It May Concern, I would like to recommend Lori Rettig for a myriad of different positions in which she is more than qualified. She is an excellent motivational speaker, an engaging teacher, although no longer in the classroom full time, as she owns several businesses and also works as a life coach, tutor, editor, writer and entrepreneur. Fortunately she continues to spend much of her personal time as an unpaid volunteer at many schools, providing numerous services to the students and the teachers, all of whom benefit from her excellence. Mrs. Rettig came to my school to help teach the students new material and to explain the dynamics of being an entrepreneur and did so in a way that made all students feel respected, validated and heard. I had the pleasure of working with her at Mount Vernon Presbyterian School last week and I was very impressed with her abilities as a teacher. Specifically, Lori worked with my students on an innovative project for the storytelling unit. She met with a number of my students to understand their interests and skills for a performance task in my Grade 6 classroom. She was able to lead an engaging discussion about the topic so the students were motivated to work on a challenging project. She impressed me with her dedication to the students, the classroom and our mission. As Head of Grade, I have worked with many different teachers and substitutes and it is always nice to have an experience with a teacher who is dedicated and professional. I would be happy to be a referral for Lori. Sincerely, Margaret M. Head of Grade 6 Middle School English Teacher Director, Middle School Community Service

Jay was prompt in his delivery, The editing was done without delay. He was pleasing to speak to over the phone. You get the feeling he likes doing what he does. That 's very important to me as a writer, because i need an editor who is wiling to assist me in my work, and he charged a reasonable price. You don't get better than that.

I worked with Kim many many years ago when we were both starting out as writers. Even back then, she was one of the most professional, passionate and talented writers I'd ever met, and I'm not at all surprised to see the success she's had over the years. She has a love of, and a way with, words that is truly remarkable and unique. Kim is not only one of the most dedicated and hard-working people I've ever met, but she is just an excellent person all around. And she is a hoot - one of the most hilarious creatures to ever walk this here earth and I know some gut busters, trust me! She is awesome. You'd be a ding dong not to work with her.

As is true of the best writers, David is a scrupulous researcher and interviewer, assessing a story from all angles before choosing the path in. His delight in, and facility with, langauge is evident in every piece he writes. He is there to crack the nut—to understand better, for example, this undergraduate or that philanthropist and to convey that understanding to his readers. There is both disciplined method in the way he writes and poetic insight. Each time David completes a piece, the 'it' is there for all to see; whatever he was called upon to describe is there in memorable form. But here is the bonus one only gets in the hands of an expert like David: he never forgets the 'we.' For those lucky enough to be David's readers, the world gets a bit bigger and more comprehensible every time he sets down his pen.

Charles Justus Garard, Jr. PhD I have known Dr. Garard for approximately 28 years and worked with him as a colleague, teaching at the college level from 1989 until 2003. During my association with Dr. Garard, I have observed his expertise not only in teaching and mentoring but also in his writing skills. He was exceptional at proofreading several of my documents and manuscripts, as well as offering other colleagues writing and literary assistance. In addition to his regular college teaching duties, he taught English as a second language on weekends to students in several minority communities in Atlanta. He traveled to China as a professor in English language, literature, and writing, where he served for seven (7) years. Dr. Garard has demonstrated an outstanding talent with the English language and is an invaluable asset to both writers and editors. Please feel free to contact me if I can offer further insight into Dr. Garard’s gifted abilities. Donald W. Blair 404-375-1435

Sarah is a rare writer who can do both creative pieces and technical work. Sarah wrote the most lively, engaging scripts for animated shorts we used to explain facets of employee benefits programs. She managed to make the topics of sickness, disability, and death less depressing and boring ensuring employees learned what they needed to learn to make good decisions about benefits for themselves and their families. Sarah also wrote several technical guides for HR technologies in use at our clients. She balanced the content between illustrative pictures and minimal words to ensure the HR managers could quickly and easily execute their most common tasks with a simple glance at the guide.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.
