David Serrao claimed from the beginning that he was a contractor ( that he had to go to the union hall for this or that ) Also there was a lot of "picking up the kids, etc, " that made timeliness impossible for him. A very charming man, but the work quality was horrible. He said he could repair my roof for the same bid I had from another company ( 3989.00 ) Since he had done a decent job on fixing my guest bathroom ceiling I decided to have him do the roof repair ) Roof is done, and hopefully will not leak ( although he didn't put the facia board, the flashing nor the gutters back on ( wanted still more money for that ) The roof didn't mesh with the rest of the roof, there is a 2 inch grade difference. I had instructed him to put sheets of plywood to raise the level to match the existing roof level. ( I have shake shingles underneath the composite) What I discovered is that David willl not do what you ask him to.. He will do what he wants to do. Frankly in the midst of having the roof repaired, I had no idea he was not following my directive. At the end of the game he charged me over 6000.00 plus ( not the estimate he agreed to ) Then He was going to repair the back deck by my maid's house. I drew the plans, showed him precisely what to do, and then I had to leave for the mainland for three weeks. When I got back,, I had an abortion on my hands. I have never seen such shoddy work in my life.. It was like a shack put together from the Ozarks. Nothing was level, nothing was edged together so there were 1/2 inch gaps between the railings, everything was cobbled together with 2 penny nails. It just looked hideous, and wasn't safe either. He did not follow the plan, so I will have to have the entire thing removed and rebuilt. ( I gave him 1000.00 for material costs) P. S. I always pay mybills, and maybe that is my problem. He is a horrible craftsman, and I would not recommend him to anyone. ( I am on the verge of suing him, for substandard work and working without a contractors license) I really am pissed that he lied over and over again about having a license. I checked with the DCCA and they have no record of him having a license.. ( I should have done that first off) He kept telling me he was responsible for the Kaiser House maintenance and repairs. ( I went to look over there and it was beautiful) I do not believe he could possibly have been responsible for the work, as his work on my historic home was so substandard as to be laughable. My suggestion is.. check DCCA and see that he has not license.. If you want pictures of the mess he made of my property, I will gladly send them to you. P. S. He had decided after I complained that he would put the gutters on the house. ( He went to Home Depot, and bought interior 1x6 smooth untreated wood, and brought it over ( I was supposed to prime and paint it in his concept of making things right..... how ludicrous is that?) In the meantime, being common sense I had another contractors ( with license) come over to inspect to see what kind of repairs reconstruction would be requried in order to fix my maid's house.. He arrived while David was on my property. David came up to me, demanded $40.00 more dollars for the cost of the wood, ( which I paid in cash) then took all his tools, and left. I have never seen this lousy son of a bitch again. I will most likley see him in court. I hope he has a really good explanation about how he is working without a license. BEWARE. This is a unskilled laborer who hires his kids to work on stuff, and his buddies from Nanakuli and Makaha. No matter how cheap you think he might be, by the end of the game you will be paying four times the amount by his demands for more money and then for fixing the stuff he screwed up. NEVER AGAIN... I had to pinch myself to be so lucky to have chosen David. He is very knowledgeable about construction and every step of the way, if he noticed something that I might want changed or fixed, he’d bring it to my attention. His work is immaculate, he works quickly and meticulously, paying attention to every detail. He’s a super nice and friendly guy. He doesn’t fool around, arrives promptly at the time he says he’ll be there, and gets right to work. We are very happy with his workmanship, attitude, professionalism, and reasonable fees. He goes overboard and does more than he’s asked to do, and takes great pride in his project. Couldn’t ask for a better person to have done the job! I’m going to miss him! I’m sure I’ll be contacting him for future jobs. David is someone you can trust, and that goes hand in hand with excellent workmanship.
