I'm glad I met Ben when I did because without him I wouldn't have ever conquered my fear of going to the gym. Lifting weights was a completely new thing to me, but Ben has shown and educated me a lot so far since I began training with him. I also got 1-on-1 nutritional advice and knowledge of what to eat and what not to eat. He's also former military which makes scheduling easy to deal with as my schedule changes a lot. If you want to achieve your fitness goals, look no further as Ben is the guy that has the ability to push you beyond what you thought you are capable of.

I have been working with Dru since the beginning of February. He started by having me log my food for a week to see my daily caloric intake was then once he saw that I was eating too little and not quite healthy he upped my caloric intake and set diet goals. Once I had my diet on track I started training with him 4-5 times a week. Working with Dru has been excellent because he teaches in a fun but no BS method. He can make you laugh but when it's time to DO WORK he's all business. He is straight forward in telling you, you have to put the effort in and how important your diet is outside of training. When he describes an exercise he does in a way that you can understand how the body and the specific muscle works. This allowed me to isolate that muscle for the best results. I highly recommend Dru as a personal trainer because I know he will get you the results you aspire to have.

What can I say, other than Christine is the best trainer on island. Christine is attentive to your mental and physical well being and actually adjusts your workouts to fit your needs for that day. This is a skill that you cannot find in just any trainer. I feel like I have her full attention to our training time and that this is money well spent. Christine will push you, but knows when you need a little break. After 3 months with Christine and her coaching on food intake and working out, I feel 10 years younger. My work schedule is crazy and I needed someone flexible. Also, someone pleasant I want to see at the end of my busy work day. The thought of paying someone to exercise me sounded crazy. But, I would not be in this great shape, in this short time without her. Christine thank you :)

January 07, 2016 Venice, Florida Suffering from shoulder pain and weakness I observed David Langfelder helping a follow shoulder sufferer. I liked his approach and problem understanding and felt this is the trainer for me. Dave's personal focus on the weakened areas and methodical training in stretching and strengthening, has relieved my pain and strengthened my shoulders and conditioned my whole body as well. Dave stresses technique and form for the correct development of troubled areas. I highly recommend Dave to anyone in need of medical rehab for a lasting recovery. I found my experience extremely rewarding. R. Lauer

Fitness is a passion for Cathleen and it's infectious. She is well educated in the human body and keeps up with the latest in physio and nutritional research. She knows the difference between urban folklore and hard science and uses her knowledge to craft an effective program for YOU. She does not use a cookie cutter approach where a trainer just uses your age and weight then looks up a stock program on a computer. She pays attention to your goals, habits, metabolic type, and physical abilities. She has used her knowledge to help me understand how to work out utilizing proper form so that injuries do not occur. She is always encouraging me to push myself to do that one more rep even when I think I can't. She makes the sessions fun, challenging, and never boring. I always look forward to my training sessions. In the one short month I have trained with Cathleen I can really feel the improvement. You're missing out if you're not training with Cathleen.

I’ve been training with Jed for almost 6 months. I have been weight training for about 7 years and had never really been able to make any real gains with my chest (crap genetics). In the time that I’ve been training with Jed, I’ve made significant strength and size gains in that area. He fixed a lot of problems I was having in regards to my form and diet. Great trainer who knows his stuff. He also has been making workout plans and a diet plan for my wife and she has been making great progress as well. Highly recommend hitting this guy up for in person training or long distance training.

Silas is just a mine gold! I don’t even know where to start this review.... Silas has coached me for nutrition. I am a crossfitter, and iver 40. I am pretty active and I needed someone to help me fine tuning my eating habits in order to turn cals into fuel. silas was the perfect person for that job. Silas would send me random messages during the week to check on me and we would meet once a week via skype. He always answered all of my questions and I even asked him to do some research for me on mushroom coffee, and he did. He is genuinely caring, passionate for one’s health and nutrition. You can’t fake that! He listened to me and never gave me a random template to follow to the T. You know, these sorts of template one fits all. Everything he researched or advised me to eat, along with the quantities, were according to me, my goals, my training, my weaknesses, my life, my social events. I am a sucker for cheese, and we worked with it. Another thing I absolutly LOVE about Silas: he is chill and non judgmental. He never once made me feel bad, even when I ate too much cheese or had to much beer. We talked about it, we compromised and solved a problem together. Lastly, but most importantly, Silas is super knowledgeable. He reads the latest research and he stays on top in his field. That is important too cause research is constantly evolving. When nutritionists don t stay on top, they still may tell you that eggs are bad for your cholesterol and blah blah blah. What else can I say... I just love the guy! Oh and one more thing: Silas talks the talk and walks the walk. He is not just preaching good nutrition, good health, good life. He LIVES it!

Bootie Camp is super fun and is guaranteed to make you go, "what was I thinking!?!" I definitely burned some serious calories. And for those who feel intimidated by the intensity of typical boot camps, Bootie Camp is different as the instructor has a variety of different workouts for people at all levels. Try it; you will wonder why you waited so long.

I have been training with Malia for the past 6 months. Malia helped me set health goals and meet them. At first I was concerned only about the number on the scale and my jeans. Malia's training went to the core of who I was and who I wanted to be come. She was consistent and encouraging. I am succeeding beyond what I imagined when we first started. Every time we connected I was inspired to continue my journey. It became less about weight loss and more about wholeness and health. I have lost weight and I am stronger. One of the best things I have learned from Malia is that this is for the rest of my life. It wasn't typical session with just a personal trainer and nutritionist. Her training taught me to see myself in a new light and the way I see food. She has been the most amazing health and wellness coach. I am deeply grateful. Thank you Malia. Feeling Alive, Jamie

My wife and I worked with Angel in the summer of 2012. I am 37 and I weighed close to 220 lbs. I was 40 lbs over weight. I worked at a desk job 40 plus hours a week. My eating habits were horrible! Then came Angel. She took her time with us, she even went grocery shopping with us to show us the mistakes we were making. She worked out with us in the morning before I went to work. No equipment or gym needed. We went to a park and she kicked our butts! I lost 50 lbs in three months! We changed our eating habits my wife lost 60 lbs! It hasn't been easy but she gave us the knowledge to keep it off and pass it on. She is always accessible to us years later. She is truly concerned about our well being. If you want to change your lifestyle for the better, hire Angel.

Adam of Body Tek pays attention to his client's purpose for training and creates individualized "routines" that change as the client's purposes change or as the client reaches goals. I've trained with Adam for 10+ years and though he has changed my "routine" numerous times and challenged my abilities, I have never suffered muscle aches, etc., after training with him. There can be significant gains without pain! It's important to train with a person who has a keen eye on what will be challenging while avoiding injury. Adam has a keen sense of a person's body type, physical capability, and interests. He uses that insight to craft "routines" that lead to personal physical improvement.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

          Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

          • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
          • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
          • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
          • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
          • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
          • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
          • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.
