My family and I were staying on the Big Island at the end of March 2016, but my 14 year old son and I wanted to target bonefish on the fly. We needed a guide and found Travis Ota, but he was on Molokai. He responded to our inquiry promptly and told us that getting to and from Molokai for a day of fishing was no problem. Once we decided on a date, he set up the island hopper charter flight from Kona and then met us at the airport in Molokai when our plane arrived. We wade fished the flats on the south shore of Molokai. As luck would have it, the wind and wave action of the days prior had affected the clarity of the water, and the visibility was not optimal. Nevertheless, Travis spotted several fish but none would take a fly that day. Our failure to hook up was certainly not due to his lack of knowledge or effort. If catching bonefish on a fly were easy, everybody would do it, and on Molokai, you can count on being the only flycasters on the flats. In addition to his guiding skills, he is extremely well read on the history of the Hawaiian Islands both geologically and culturally. As a bonus, before we had to return to the airport for the flight back to Kona, he took us to an overlook to show us the leper colony at Kaluapapa and tell us of its significance in Hawaiian history. I would love to fish with Travis again should I find myself back in Hawaii. He is personable as well as knowledgeable and instructed my son and I with friendliness and respect. Visited March 2016

Thank you Travis!!!!!! I spent 21 days on the Islands by far my most memorable day was the day I spent with Travis! I found Travis to be a fun, well spoken and very knowledgeable guide who has much passion for fishing, his culture and the Islands in general and willing to share it with me. I had mentioned to him that I would really like to catch a Bone Fish. Not only did he get me on the Bones and a couple of other species he provided everything needed tackle and gear wise. On the drive out to where we fished, once we arrived and on the way back to where I was staying,(He picked me up there) he told me of the history, geology and culture of the surrounding areas and answered all of my questions gladly. Hiring Travis was a wonderful experience and I will be calling him again when I come back to The Big Island!!!! Thanks Again Travis, Chuck Brinkley Topock,Az.

I want to say that my experience with Travis was just about as good as it was going to get. Especially with all of the issues that came up, all on my part by the way, Travis turned what was looking like a total bust of a day into a great experience for my whole family. So when we got to the beach, the day began to look up. Travis got us all set with a rod each for myself, my son, and my father-in-law. Travis took extra time with my son, and allowed me to move away just a bit to get some room to do my thing. Travis was patient, and extremely positive with him. We heard a lot of stories and talked a lot about Hawaii and the fishing and everything in between, he's very entertaining. Every time we got bites, or the fish took the bait, Travis was there to take care of the dirty work, which was something new for me, but just perfect for my kid who was a bit apprehensive. We caught 5 fish total, and Travis was totally informative about the fish that we caught. My son was engrossed with it all, and Travis was just about the perfect host to deliver a perfectly fantastic, albeit impromptu, first time fishing experience for my entire family in Hawaii! Thanks Travis! We will see you again!
