The work that was done (so far) seems to have been done very well. While it did take a long time for SmcExteriors to come out to our place, the perceived quality of the craftsmanship and the price was well worth the wait, and the only reason (I believe) it took as long as it did to do the repair is because it was a relatively small job outside of their usual area of business, so if it were a bigger job it may have had some more urgency. But the most important thing to take away from this review is quality with price: SmcExteriors did this repair between five to ten times less than other contractors with the same care. Most contractors wanted to charge close to $500 to replace one 10ft panel of fascia. Steve was down to earth, charged a more-than-reasonable amount, and really wanted our business. If we ever need another job done, I won't hesitate to get in touch with Steve.

Grandview Construction put in a new microwave and vented it to the outside. They did an excellent job. The vent goes through the existing cabinet and out the top. They built a box to hide the pipe that matches the cabinets very well. They also replaced two lights for us. We would hire them again and recommend them to others.

Weisbrich Construction did an outstanding job finishing my basement. Cody is detail oriented while not losing the big picture. The quality of the work exceeded my expectations. However, in my mind what sets Weisbrich Construction apart from others is the responsiveness and steady communication about project progress, cost estimates and design and structural choices. A text or phone call would get a response usually within the hour. Highly recommend going with Weisbrich.

Jay and his guys provided refinishing of our hardwood floors and trim work for our house we recently purchased. The floor is red oak and they sanded it down to its natural state and finished it with 3 coats of poly. The results were beautiful and we received many awesome comments regarding the floors thus far. I would recommend J&S to anyone. I would also encourage anyone who uses J&S to talk with them thoroughly regarding your project before you start. There were some points during the project where both contractor and client were on a different page however these issues were rectified. Bottomline: great work, customer service-oriented, friendly and fairly priced.

Debra came and painted a house we were getting ready to put on the market. She did an awesome job, very professional and kept the work area clean as we had other contractors ie; electricians and plumbers, working in house at the same time. I even hired her to clean the house when all the work had been done. I will definitely hire her and her husband again the quality of work and attention to detail was beyond what I had expected for the price.

Stone & ceramic tile custom designed projects. Custom cabinets & furniture along with custom architectural moldings. Company Information I grew up on a large livestock and grain farm between Waukee and Grimes, Iowa. Two years out of college, I went headfirst into business for myself, subcontracting frame and trim jobs on new homes for the very rich and well-to-do in the Des Moines area. I soon grew to several crews, and then to my own custom homes. I have repaired and remodeled several homes south of Grand Ave in Des Moines. I was also a Journeyman Carpenter and Construction Superintendent for a few years on several large commercial projects in the Des Moines Metro Area. I've done homes in La Jolla, California; Vail, Colorado; and Cherry Hills Ranch, Colorado all of them between 12,000 sq/ft and 30,000 sq/ft, just to name a few. I have also built one-of-a-kind custom furniture, yet I'm not afraid to jump in the trench when installing a septic system. I've been directing, designing and creating amazing homes and commercial projects for customers for over 30 years. I've done everything from building and installing agricultural equipment & bldg's, grain handling equipment and storage installations, pouring concrete foundations & flatwork, Wood foundations, septic systems, plumbing rough-ins & installing plumbing fixtures, faucets, sinks and all their repairs. Any electrical project or repairs needed for residential homes and remodels I do myself. And a very large part of my experience has been with custom woodworking, cabinetry and elaborate hardwood stairways & railings. I've also created exotic wood inlayed flooring systems and patterns. Yet, I also have been very proactive with energy efficiency on all of my custom homes & projects. I can take care of all your home maintenance & repairs. There is No Job To Small ! Plumbing repairs, electrical repairs, door and window repairs or replacements. I also do foundation repairs from leaks to replacements. I do ceramic and wood floors. Countertops of all kinds. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
