FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
When I was 18, I worked in a convenience store. One of my regular customers was an elderly gentleman of around 70. He was a paper hanger and painter. He had taken on a job that was too big for him. He asked me one day if I would be interested in making some money helping him out. I told him I didn't know the first thing about painting or hanging paper but he said he would teach me if I wanted to learn. For me a whole new world opened up. I learned very quickly and loved the work. We became a team, taking on more and more jobs together. I worked with Leonard for about 6 years before he retired and handed me his contact books. I was overwhelmed by his generosity. He had just handed me his lifes work to carry on this noble craft. He has since passed on but I still use the technique and skills he taught me 30 years ago.
- What types of customers have you worked with?
Most common jobs are color changes, probably a kitchen or bath. But I love a challenge. Give me a stairwell to hang and I'm in heaven.
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
Recently I worked an industrial job. There was a fire in a cheese factory in Wisconsin. I worked along side 30 other painters and other tradesmen to get the factory back up and running. While I enjoyed the experience and very proud of how it all came together, I am not an industrial painter. Too many chemicals. I do not like having to wear a respirator to do my work.
