Jovan was a joy to work with. He did an exceptional job on our Pergo floor at a very reasonable rate. He was very meticulous and always left his project area cleaned up before leaving for the day.

I cannot recommend Mario enough! I found him on Thumbtack while I was in Georgia preparing to purchase our house in Iowa. He was quick to reply and easy to work with. Through emails and one phone call, we worked out the details and Mario followed through with the projects. We had Mario paint the interior of our house - INCLUDING painting our wood built-in cabinets and shelves white - and painting our 12 foot ceilings. They are beautiful and are not chipping at all on the polyurethaned wooden cabinets (which means he sanded and prepared perfectly!). Mario showed up when he said he would, and he always cleaned up after himself. I have not found any paint on our floors or carpets - he is very thorough and organized. We will call him whenever we need anything done in our home. My husband already has other projects for him! On top of being an amazing worker, I have to mention what an absolutely WONDERFUL man Mario is. He is enthusiastic and determined to please his customers. He is truly NICE and respectful. You will be very pleased! And - lastly - I would be failing miserably in this review if I didn't mention that Mario is an artist. While he was finishing up a job for us this morning, Mario and I discussed art. He ended up bringing in his portfolio. I am an art teacher and artist myself... I was blown away by his talent. His style is gorgeous! Ask to see his personal portfolio if you get a chance! His work is amazing! (thank you, thank you, thank you, Mario, for helping us out so much! Jason was hired to refloor our living room, which included removing the old, junky hardwood, and replacing with new ceramic tile. Jason was very upfront about pricing and if there were any issues that required an increase in price (tool rentals, etc.). He was able to start very quickly (within a couple weeks), and completed the job in 5 days. We're very, very pleased with the results of this job and absolutely would hire Jason again.

Resurrection Home Solutions did a great job in siding our house. Chayse and his team were very polite and they did everything that we had agreed on. They actually went above and beyond in quite a few areas at no additional cost. We ran into an issue with some rotting wood, and Chayse explained to me the issue and I personally thought the cost was going to be outrageous. It was actually 20% of what I thought. That was awesome news. We also received a $500 discount for being an EOC member. www.eoc.team Resurrection is a participating EOC business member. Not only was Resurrection our lowest bid, but then to get an additional $500 off, that's $500 in our pocket. My wife and I would have no problem recommending Resurrection Home Solutions. Thanks Chayse, Ben, Kidd and Carl.

The title says it all, folks! I hired Mike for my bathroom renovation project. I was working with a tiny mid-century modern bathroom that had not been updated since it was built. Mike took out the old cabinet (it has been constructed right into the bathroom) took out the old flooring and even helped patch up the wall where it needed it. Some of these things were not in our original agreement, but he knew it had to be done. So he did it, and he did it amazingly well. I would recommend him to anyone who wants a hard working, kind, polite, honorable, focused to detail and smart contractor. I have had hit and miss experiences on Thumbtack, but boy am I glad I took the chance on it again. Everyone who comes into my house always marvels at my redesigned bathroom. Not just the coat of paint, or the floor but how well everything is put together. Every little detail was touched, including this perfectly laid line of white caulk. Thank you, Mike! You'll hear from me again! :D

Nick did an absolutely amazing job on our wood floor and carpet projects. He went above and beyond what we asked. We had a very small window that the project could be done and he managed to complete it ahead of schedule. We are thrilled with the materials he recommended and the craftsmanship he installed them with. Will definitely hire him back for our next flooring project!

Matt has done several construction projects for us. The big one was the rear deck. He did a tremendous job getting the deck up to code for us. He is very methodical in his work and will not finish the job if he feels that something is out of place. All the boards on the floor of the deck fit perfectly, as do the railings. He even told me that he will help me pick out the right stain to use in the springtime. He also did some siding work for us and it was professionally done. It was very time consuming and he did it in the worst weather imaginable. Matt also helped steer me in the right direction when my driveway began to rise from the cold weather. He told me to find a good company who does mud-jacking and I did. No further problems. He is very knowledgeable about construction projects and would do an outstanding job should you consider using his services.

I am very happy with C 'n' N Construction work. Joe did my complicated roof in Muscatine and advised me on how to do it in a way that saved me a lot of money. He worked promptly around the weather and shipping of materials. Joe also rebuilt both porch floors and enclosed both my front and back porchs. Previously he has helped me refinish all of my first level hardwood floors. He also has done a lot of little things, like doors that don't close correctly and installing a new toilet without damaging antique plumbing. He can work outside of standard hours to suit your schedule. He was careful to return any unused items to keep costs down. His labor costs were very reasonable. The only thing that could be better is being able to do more projects I'm dreaming up!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
