When working with Alex, she is always willing to slow things down and take apart the problem to explain it in a way that makes sense to you. She tailors each session to benefit the student most and focuses on trying to identify this disconnect between the student and content. Something that was especially helpful to me was when she would have me do the problem on my own and verbalize each step out loud which helped me to catch my own mistakes. Along with that, she is able to break down complex problems for you and help you to learn how to attack them in the most efficient way. And she does it all in a super encouraging way!

Maggie is an excellent tutor! She goes above and beyond to make sure she's prepared to help, and thinks outside of the box to come up with ways to help with comprehension. She really helps get to the root of the problem, rather than just explaining individual concepts. Overall, I definitely came away with not only better grades, but a better understanding of the material overall.

I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Voice and Music Education from Simpson College. I am also a licensed teacher with the State of Iowa with endorsements in Music, Elementary Education, and English as a Second Language. Too, I've completed graduate work in Education and Theater at the University of Northern Iowa. I have over 25 years' experience teaching in schools, theaters, community education programs, and private studios. I have equal years' experience as a performer in choral, musical theater, opera, and play productions. I currently own and operate a private studio where I teach piano, voice, guitar, and stage dialects. Music students learn how to perform with their instrument, study music history and theory, as well as taking advantage of performing opportunities in the metro area. One of the best rates in town. Studio slots are filling up quickly-please contact me soon. Please be aware that the system won't let me enter my tuition fee for a 45-minute lesson. My fee is $15.00 for a half-hour lesson. Thus, 45 mins. would be $22.50 and an hour $30.00. I look forward to hearing from you! I am indeed open to taking adult students. As well, I am indeed interested in working with toddlers. Peggy

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons.
