I asked Chris to design an original complex Hawaiian-style quilt as a 70x70 wall hanging. It included hibiscus, birds of paradise, and hummingbirds, loosely based on a pillow I had and some random ideas. It came out beautifully and I'm sure will be the centerpiece of our living room! She also made me a smaller wall hanging with a photo of my son. It took 5-6 months from original order, so you'll have to be patient, but it was worth it. Thanks Chris! I love it!
May 7, 2020VerifiedHair of the Dog Quilts's replyThanks for the kind words, Laura. It was a pleasure working on the wall hangings. Booking your wall hanging months in advance made it hard to wait for me to get started on it, I know, but I'm glad you felt that it was worth the wait. It certainly was a challenge but one I definitely enjoyed!! Thank you sew much!!

I had come across a trunk of my mother's clothes that had not been opened since her death in 1973. I decided to have quilts made for each of her living grandchildren. I found Chris of Hair of the Dog Quilts on Thumbtack and based on the reviews, I reached out to her. She could not have been easier to work with. She took a real interest in what I was trying to achieve in sharing a part of a grandmother with grandchildren who never knew her. The end results were FANTASTIC!!!! The quilts were beautiful and the grandchildren were surprised and pleased. I could not have made this happen without Chris. I am forever grateful to her. Jay Stevenson

Having the presence of mind to even think of getting a memory quilt made for my late husband's mother was a special blessing. Every time I thought of how happy she would be to have a quilt made from her son's favorite shirts and jeans and what a comfort it would be to her, I knew that I had to find a way to get the memory quilt made. Enter Thumbtack, this cool app that I had never even heard of. Well, Thumbtack made the miracle happen. And, Thumbtack Friends, let me tell you THIS little tidbit: CHRIS WELLS IS THE MIRACLE!!!! The only memory quilts I had ever seen were simple block patterned quilts, which are meaningful in their own way because of the fabric, of course. However, Chris creates memory quilts that are TRULY WORKS of ART! She honors the LIFE of the person whose SPIRIT inhabits the clothes that she has been entrusted with in a way that was ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL AND ENERGIZING TO ME!! I felt that I had made a FRIEND in Chris. She is a VERY SPECIAL PERSON who is PASSIONATE about her art BUT EVEN MORE PASSIONATE ABOUT PLEASING HER CUSTOMER, and in the instance of a memory quilt-- passionate about HONORING THE LIFE THAT IS BEING MEMORIALIZED. Because I chose Chris, not only did my mother-in-law get a GORGEOUS MEMORY QUILT but my father-in-law, three brothers-in-law, and sister-in-law got equally GORGEOUS MEMORY PILLOWS, which I would never have thought of in a million years! I cannot say enough good things about Chris Wells and the quality of her work! She kept me informed in each stage of the process from start to finish. And she has an uncanny ability to literally let the fabric speak to her in the creative phase as she is determining a pattern if you have given her complete artistic control as I did after we talked so that she could get a feel for what direction she might go that would honor my husband in a way that would please his mother. I can hardly wait to get my own memory quilt made from his shirts and ties! It will be another CHRIS WELLS MIRACULOUS MEMORY MASTERPIECE HAIR OF THE DOG QUILT!!

I spoke to Hair of the Dog Quilts when my Buffy passed away. I wanted to have a quilt made with her scarfs. After several emails I knew she was the only one I wanted to make the quilt. Her kindness, caring, and talent is very special. The quilt turned out to be way more than I could possibly imagine. I sleep with it nightly with my new friend Jazz (australian sheppard). Jazz loves it too!

Chris was absolutely amazing!! I was making a quilt for my boyfriend as an anniversary gift. He is a Star Wars fan and I am not .. we share a room .. :/ I thought this quilt would be a huge compromise but Chris did so wonderful, its a beautiful quilt! I really wanted to be involved in picking fabrics, and adding a personal touch. She was great at communicating, sending pictures and updates. I even fell in love in an old school piece of fabric, she was able to secure a the image I really wanted! The biggest personal touch was adding pictures of my BF and I. I can't express how awesome this experience was.

FAQs
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?I like to get all the information I can from a new customer about who is going to use the quilt. What they like, what they did for a living, what their passions are. This tells me if the quilt should be fancy, not too girly, maybe more manly-manlier...I made the main focus of one quilt lotus flowers for a woman who was a florist, and a memory quilt I made with eagles in 9 blocks from a customer's father's neckties because her Dad loved eagles.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I'm self-taught but have taken classes here and there. I belonged to a Quilting Guild for a while and learned a lot from the other members. I love to try new things on my own and if they work, YAY, and if they don't, I try other things.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?I wanted to make a special quilt for one of the volunteers of my dog rescue group, FluffyButts Rescue Resort. This couple had done so much for the group, and for me personally, that I knew I wanted to make an applique quilt with dogs on it and once I did that first quilt, I was hooked.
