It started out really great but the schedule kept slowing down and a basement finish that should have taken 6-8 weeks is still not done at 12 weeks & counting. However, Restore 24/7 is honest, communicative, responsive and they do good work. Their price is average. Stu Chambers, the owner, is very personable and easy to work with.

Working with Dennis was great and very stress free! We hired Dennis to put up a re-purposed Barn wood wall in our house and he listened to exactly how I wanted the wall to look. My spouse and I went to a local dealer and picked out the old barn wood we wanted and the colors we wanted to utilize, took them home and washed them the day before Dennis arrived. When Dennis got there we explained most of the wood was too wide and we wanted it trimmed down in width. We talked about our plan and go things going. My spouse stripped and cut the wood down to size with Dennis' table saw while Dennis applied them to the wall. They got a real good rhythm going and two hours later my wall was complete and beautiful! I really appreciate Dennis working with us on time a days of when we could get the project done and being open to the way we wanted it to look. I am very happy with the work and would hesitate to hire Dennis again for any job. We plan to use Dennis when we finish our basement and would recommend his work to anyone! Give him a call , he can do just about anything!

I am putting plumbing in my garage so this is new construction in an old house. It was a picky poky job because of the location and the things I want him to do. He has done a great job! He was so careful trenching through the yard not to tear it up more than he needed too! He came when he said he would, worked quickly and told me he would figure out how to do what I wanted! He fixed some of the original plumbing and had to tear up my bacement to get the project hooked together. But when he was finished my basement was good as new! I would happily recommend him! I believe for the work he had to do his pricing was very fair! I also found him to be professional and friendly!

My experience with Bob and Rusty was very good. I gave them the contract to repair siding and paint my house, rebuild the deck, and install Vinyl flooring in my laundry room and basement stairs. Bob and Rusty told me that instead of rebuilding the deck, they could use the existing frame, and extend it like I had wanted and they only had to rebuild the railing, steps and put the new deck floor. I saved at least $1500 doing it this way. Rusty even built me planters out of a $10 gutter, painted it and fixed it to the railing on the new deck...for free. The Handymen are very ethical in how they conduct their business. The project took longer than expected on account of a few rain days. While I felt that they could have worked a few extra hours to compensate for the rain outs, the end result is a completely "refreshed" house with upgrades. My neighbors kept telling me how much they liked the new paint job, the deck and the extra "features" (Planters). I will be hiring the Handymen back for other jobs in the future. They are quite personable and care about the quality of their work. Repeat business is very important to them, and I intend to give them just that. All in all a solid 5/5 rating!

I had a wonderful experience working with Jay and have already recommend my friends to him. He is reliable, hardworking and very friendly. He patched and textured about 20 holes in my basement where there had previously been outlets. The patch job is flawless and my husband and I could not tell where the outlets had been. In addition to patching and texturing he and his partner, Sead painted my very large basement. The paint job was amazing, the lines are crisp and clean. The job took two evenings and one whole day. My husband and I happened to be out of town for the weekend and came home to what felt like a whole new basement. Our final bill was exactly what he had estimated it be. When he finished the job he gave us his business card and I then saw that in addition to painting, drywall and texture he also does flooring and remodeling. I’m will definitely hire Jay again and have already discussed having him paint kitchen cabinets.

Lientz Construction was recommended by our bank when applying for a construction loan. Mike Lientz submitted a competitive bid against a modular home on acreage property we purchased. He took the time to understand our needs and asked a lot of questions about our preferences and lifestyle in order to budget and plan accordingly to meet our needs. He was very professional throughout the entire building process and met his time commitments. Mike also offered several great suggestions to enhance our original plans yet stay within budget. Quality and craftsmanship exceeded our expectations in every way. Mike acted as the general contractor with his own crews performing framing and finish trim work. We enjoyed similar positive results with every sub contractor involved which Mike personally interacted with on a frequent basis. Anyone will find Mike to be of very high moral character, professional at all times and more then anything he does what he says he will do. We were thrilled with our Lientz home and would do it all over again with Mike if we had the chance. He certainly knows his trade, the industry, costs associated and is very comfortable to do business with.

Not only are the 2 ladies good at organizing, they are good cleaners too. My house was very messy, and they took on each room without hesitation. The sisters are very hard workers, and my house turned out just the way I wanted it. Not only did they organize the upstairs, they cleaned and organized the basement and garage. I was dreading tackling those projects, but they were no problem for Shelly and Carrie. The friendliness and down to earth personalities made the experience enjoyable. I look forward to booking them again to come help me.

Hernandez Ramirez Properties did a kitchen renovation for me consisting of new tile floors, a new finish on my existing cabinets, paint on my walls and baseboards, installation of new crown molding, and a tile back-splash. The owner, Adrian, did an awesome job! He has great attention to detail, and is friendly. I also hired him to complete a basement project including a bedroom and bathroom, which turned out just as good as the kitchen. I will definitely hire him again for my next project!

Overall I been very satisfied with my experience With DECO Design and RENO. J has been great from the start, very trust worthy, and likable and goes the extra mile to accommodate your situation. He was able to finish my basement to a living area, gym, with deadlift platform and making the squat rack a flat foot so we don't have to drill through the new carpet, and office area. Quality is great and adds the details that most would overlook that adds an extra wow factor. Thank you DECO Design!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
