We are extremely satisfied with our fence project using Ron from Iowa Maintenance and Handyman. Ron was very prompt to respond with a site visit and quote. He was able to schedule installation the following week. Despite a drop in temperature and some rain, he finished the installation on time and it looks great. He answered any questions we had and was quick to respond to any concerns we had. So happy with results and would strongly recommend him for your next project.

My project was to have roughly 380 ft of fencing installed along a commercial property. The purpose was to separate the adjacent alley way and to help better secure the area. Historically the area has been less than desirable and we have been working to clean it up. The owner of Grandview Construction personally met with me on site to discuss and bid the project. Our details for the project were outlined and Grandview Construction delivered to the T. From pulling the permits to the final clean up, Grandview Construction was always prompt, professional and honest. I am very please with the work Grandview completed for us and would highly recommend hiring them for any project you might have.

They were great! They explained exactly what they would do and any time they needed to work around something they would ask my opinion before proceeding. The new extension on my fence looks great as does the old portion of the fence and deck where they power washed and stained the entire thing!

Greg and his crew did an EXCELLENT job for us. The tore down the old gutters on the house and put up new gutters on both the house and new metal building. They disposed of the old gutters and cleaned up so you couldn't even tell they had been here. Very professional and wonderful to work with.

I am a wildlife rehabilitator and was looking for help to convert a potting shed into space for wildlife. David was kind enough to offer his help and do the build voluntarily. He was very punctual, planned ahead, and was meticulous about his work. He built a wall and installed 2 doors to make the area a functional rehab space. I am very pleased with the work David does and will surely use him again.

I had what seemed to be a mysterious leak causing two large wet spots in front of the vanity on the wall to wall carpet in my small hall bathroom. I called a local plumbing company whose yellow trucks are seen all over town, to assess the problem and fix it. It took.two days before they were able to come out. The two "plumbers" examined the wet carpet for 45 minutes but couldn't find the source of the wetness. Oddly, they refused to pull the carpet back because they said it was not their company's policy to pick up carpet. They left charging me their fee for coming out with no suggestions or solutions to the mysterious spots. Through Thumtack, as a first time user, Dean replied immediately to my request and was able to come out the next day. With the assistance of his very competent helper, Dean immediately identified the source of the leak at the base of the toilet, saying it needed a new seal. He went over to Lowe's and purchased the parts and the job was completed in a very short time. I asked him to pick up the carpet and with an easy straight cut across the carpet at the doorway, I was able to dispose of the wet carpet so the pad can air out to avoid any further mold build up. I'll call upon Dean again to help me have tile laid down to replace the carpet. It is incredible to me that a large plumbing company in the Des Moines Area with their name suggesting high morals could not identify this very common and simple plumbing problem, leaving me, their customer, perplexed and stressed about who to turn to if a plumbing company couldn't figure solve the problem. Thanks Dean for solving what was really not such a big mystery after all-for you!

VERY REASONABLE, CLEAN, AND (finally!) PROFESSIONAL!! We are so thankful we found Colten! He was prompt, courteous, and in in spite of working very fast, he was meticulous. No messes to clean up after the jobs were done. We ask him to do several jobs around the house; most were maintenance, some installation. He cut to fit shelves in closet and installed them; the shelves required a cut- out to fit around a pipe. He installed and caulked one bath surround and re- caulked another bath to correct a poorly done job by another company. He made some repairs to the deck. He repaired an area of a wall and wallpapered it. Cut and installed more shelving, and a few other maintence jobs. This is highly unusual to say but EVERY JOB WAS PERFECTLY DONE! If you hire any other handyman, you are throwing the dice. We had never met Colten, we're not related or anything; this is an authentic rating! Colten even suggested a temporary fix for our deck handrail if the ironwork piece needed took awhile to come in; that's above and beyond!

We have hired Dustin Petek and his crew on a couple of occasions. We did have him deliver some small furniture and disassemble some workout equipment, which he and his staff did a great job, but where they really shined was when we moved from one house to another. They came and assessed the needs to determine how many crew members to have. They showed up bright and early, as promised and did not disappoint. The first thing they did was put on different shoes so they would not damage our floors. Then they got right to work. They started around 7 a.m. and were still working at 8 p.m. They hustled the entire time, they were cognizant of disassembling furniture, keeping track of nuts and bolts, protecting items with padding, and genuinely showed care about our furniture. When they started to put the beds back together at our new house (which I never expected them to do, they made sure they were exactly where we wanted them and that they were centered under lights/fans, etc. They just truly showed their professionalism and that quality matters in all that they do. I will hire Dustin and his crew for any job, large or small, at any time. Their pricing was extremely reasonable and I felt like he cared more about our furnishings than any other movers we have ever used. A+++++++

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.
