Eric was very professional and prompt with communications. He was able to resolve some issues with our project. When his supplier bid the materials wrong, he paid the difference because he didn’t want to break his word to me, even after I offered to pay the difference. As far as I am concerned this is the only contractor I would bother with on this site. A man who keeps his word is worth doing business with. This is a legitimate review, written by a real customer. He built my fence, made it look great, communicated any issues with me, and again, kept his word, I honestly would have paid more to work with him, but he was my lowest bid.

TVR did a great job hauling 8 very large trailer loads of construction debris to the dump. Ron was trustworthy and easy to work with and did a very thorough sweeping and cleaning of the shop area after he finished hauling the debris away.

This is the second job Larry has done for us. His experience is obvious in the suggestions and advice before construction. We especially benefited from his ideas for making it look "just right". This last job was a 30' patio cover with redwood rafters...very prompt and complete, very competitive price, not a single problem!

My front door frame was cracked so the locks did not work and the door was sagging. Kyle from American Remodels and Construction did a great job repairing the door frame. In addition he repaired the inside siding that began to crack and painted it even though I told him he did not need to do that. He wanted to make sure the job was a quality job and not just a completed job. Over all the work is excellent.

I hired Ron to fix my shoddy garage door and install my front door. He was nothing but courteous and professional. He was nothing but helpful when it came to programming my garage door and the front door installation was done to perfection. Couldn't be happier with Nacarelli Construction and so stoked to have a professional to finally work with.

Rick answered me back within a couple of hours. I made an appointment with him for the next day. Rick showed up and was very knowledgeable. He showed me his contractors license and actually sent me the number in text. Rick told me that when my husband and I were done checking out his license and felt satisfied with our finds that he would be glad to make an appointment for the project. We did hire him to install our bathroom window and fix the window and decaying wall around it. He also installed an exhaust fan and fixed some chipped wall around my closet doors. I usually do all of the projects myself as a women due to my husband working all of the time. Rick was nice enough to show me some tricks about how to do repairs. He is very nice and very good at his job. I personally feel that for all of the work he did that his price was super good. Rick also went to the hardware store and took pictures of everything we needed so that we knew exactly what to buy. Excellent service. I will hire him again.

We are very happy that we hired Isaac to do our project of adding built-in floating bookshelves. He was very responsive, very professional, and always punctual. He was also respectful of our vision for the project while offering his expertise and helpful suggestions when needed. I took his advice on several things and I am very happy with the result. After he provided a reasonable quote, I decided to hire him, and he came back with a formal contract ready for me to review and sign which included a one-year workmanship guarantee, and I appreciate that level of professionalism. He is talented and a great contractor. He was also very kind to my dog and we also appreciated that he very conscientiously made sure that our back gate was closed behind him so she could not get out. I would certainly hire him again.

Jayme, The son of a painter, did a beautiful job on my exterior trim, door, shutters and window frames! I had injured my shoulder and could not finish a job I had started. It was well worth it to me to pay him to do the job.I believe he did a better job than I could have done myself....& in less time. I have always done my own painting but plan to use him in the future for interior painting. Thank you, Jayme!

In the early stages of selling my property Mark, a prior acquaintance I met at a social event, came to my house with a couple of investors interested in my property. An hour prior to their arrival I had discovered extensive snow and ice damage to my roof. It was in May and I had phoned other sources and was told most contractors were backed up for months due to the extensive roof damage throughout the Treasure Valley the record setting winter had bestowed on us. When Mark arrived I felt I was in between a rock and an oncoming train. Before Mark left my house he went on the roof and assessed the damage despite not being scheduled to do so. He started making phone calls right away and in a couple of days his roofers were on the roof doing a tear off of the old roof. OOOH NOOO! After the tear off we discovered additional damage, The roof was probably 60 years old and previous water damage made the project more than was planned to do a quick repair. WHAT I REALLY LIKED ABOUT MARK was that when he had to make a decision he ALWAYS talked to me first and we discussed the construction and costs prior to approval. He and his crew did a roof remodel that took some expert skill in carpentry and ingenuity. I would watch in awe how he put a steeper pitch on the existing roof and eliminated all the problem areas. After that Mark had his roofing crew come back in and install the new roof. I was so pleased with Mark that I ask him if he he had some one who could do the drywall on the ceiling where the previous roof had leaked. He had a crew over that day to give an estimate and they quickly got started and the ceiling looks just great. His painters came in and finished the job to my complete satisfaction. IF I HAD TO DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN: I would hire Mark Adams "Build-It-USA".

Mr Giddings was referred to me by a friend of mine. I live in a townhouse that had popcorn ceilings I was never pleased about. Mr Giddings was the only contractor who came in with the confidence to tackle the job. Very professional, personable, and clean.

Nick from C&N Construction was a pleasure to work with from the start. He was responsive right out of the gate, provided a thorough estimate, broken down into the details that I had requested, and was able to get the job completed on time and within budget. He even provided me before and after pictures of the work performed to ensure that it met my expectations. To find a contractor that is this responsive and communicative was refreshing, and I would highly recommend C&N for any projects, big or small, that you may have.

We hired Clint Shippy to build our 2100 sq. Foot home. His craftsmenship is excellent. The subs were on the job, all the time, plus they were some of the best subs that he hired to work on our home. He made sure everything went smoothly for us. When the sheet rock crew came in, one of the men told me they were always happy to follow up a Shippy Construction framing, for it was a guarantee that the framing would be square. He is punctual and a perfectionist in his work, trying to please his customers at all times. We would certainly like to pass this information on to anyone considering hiring Shippy Construction, for you will certainly be pleased.

We found Joe at the perfect time during our remodel project. We hired him to install the trim in our house which turned into adding kitchen cabinet trim, tiling both bathroom showers, and installing a kitchen backsplash and range hood. We also roped him into some smaller projects like cutting our butcher block island down and installing a roll out trash in a kitchen cabinet. We have been so pleased with the work he has done, both in terms of quality and speed. He has been so accommodating to all of our questions and concerns and has worked around our diy schedule and projects. Above all we have been most grateful to the care he has taken of our house. There are so many contractors out there to choose from but it had been good to know that when we return from work there won’t be scuffs in the walls or banged up floors or a huge mess, which had been our experience with previous contractors. We continue to hire him for projects because he cares for our home the same way we would.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

        What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

        • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
        • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
        • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
        • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
