I'm so happy to say I've finally finished my website and I have to give a huge thanks to Paige! I hired Paige to do the copy writing for my website and she did an excellent job! Paige came up with all the copy writing on my website except the Bride's page. Most websites in my industry doesn't usually have much copy writing, meaning Paige truly came up without using a reference. When I sent the request for a copy writer, Paige was the highest bid. But her professionalism and work quality was worth every penny. She did a great job communicating every step of the process. Paige also set up a manageable payment plan so I was able to handle the investment. I've recommend Paige to other pros I know and I highly recommend her to you! Check out my website to see her work, www.rouxsartistry.com.

Nick and Whitney did a great job at our wedding! They made it a very comfortable and enjoyable experience. The pictures we got were exquisite and were truly better than we ever could have imagined. The were creative and gave us memories that we will treasure forever. They put so much time and effort into everything. Prior to the wedding we had a lot of communication about what we wanted. We toured the venue and all got on the same page. They took their time editing the photos and making them exactly what we wanted. They are caring, fun and made everyone feel right at home. We couldn't have imagined this day without them. Best decision ever!!! I would highly recommend them for any event you want beautiful memories from.

Jeri Walker and I have worked together on several projects so far and I hope to work on many more in the near future. She’s proofread three of my novels and has also critiqued and copy edited a fourth. In addition, she’s helped me prepare blog posts and has written blurbs for my novels. Her insights and guidance are much appreciated and they help me take my writing to the next level. Each time Jeri has gone above and beyond my expectations and she’s a pleasure to work with. Her sense of humor and dedication helps me get through each round of edits and I’m lucky to have her on my team.

I'll read and edit your book or script. I have a Bachelor Degree with minors in Interdisciplinary Writing and Rhetoric and Geography. I enjoy science fiction and historical books and often read 1000 pages a week or more depending on the book and writer's style. I am pedantic, which means I sometimes find myself caught up in the details others overlook. Examples are: to, two, too, there, their, they're. Misspelled words and incorrect use of words stand out to me. Redundancy is another point I consider. If the author uses a word multiple times in a paragraph or too often in the book, I will point it out and help them find another suitable word. Grammar is important. I recently read a book where the author used a colloquialism outside the character's speech. I'm sorry folks but "unthaw" is not a word. If it were, it would mean freeze not defrost. I have tutored others in writing and English. I have also helped a blind author edit her manuscript.

I love words. And because I love them I only accept perfection from anything I write or edit. When it comes to writing, just like talking, everyone has their own voice. Since I enjoy many different types of writing I can use multiple voices, adjusting to what is best for what I`m writing.

About

As a tutor, I have gotten great feedback from both students and other tutors. One tutor listened as I was explaining key ideas from Moby Dick to a student. Afterwards, she said, "If I had had a teacher like that I would have enjoyed school more." I try to be encouraging and creative when I tutor. I include visuals, word pictures, analogies to explain concepts. I also am passionate about learning new things and love to see students succeed, and I think that gets communicated through my time with them. With writing, I love good stories. I have read a lot since I was a kid and have taught writing, graded writing, and fine tuned the way I think about writing over the years. For me, it's important to say something clearly, concisely, and in a memorable way. In short, to say it/write it well. Because communication is such a big part of the way we do relationships and business, I strive to learn every day and work hard to communicate my own ideas effectively and help others to do the same.

I love to copy edit the way some people love to solve math problems or paint pictures - it’s an obsessive love that immerses me completely in the page. I find myself reaching for the red pen while reading newspapers, magazines, letters, emails……all of it. Copy editing is my crossword puzzle. It is my sudoku, my connect-the-dots, my word jumble. Because I am an editing addict, it benefits you. I turn out a good, clean product quickly and with a smile on my face. Copy editing can be as simple as scanning a document several times to make sure there are no misspellings, fragmented sentences, or commas sneaking in where they don’t belong. It can be as involved as restructuring entire sentences and paragraphs to get the very most out of a piece of writing as concisely as possible. It’s up to you, the client, to tell me how deep you want me to dive.

I am a homeschooling mom to three teenagers. I was an administrative assistant for 15yrs prior to becoming a full time mom. In those 15yrs years, writing and editing were strongly part of the work I did for executives. I am proficient and strong in my English and editing skills. I recently just finished editing my oldest daughter's first book and will be sending it off to publishers soon. While not a "professional" editor per se, my writing and editing skills are strong and I enjoy this type of work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.
