Jim from Inside-Out built me a very nice railing around my stairway. The old one was wrought iron from the 70's. Jim did a wonderful job at a reasonable price, he was professional and a very good carpenter. It really improved the look of the room. We later had him come back and build a pantry in the kitchen, we were just as happy with his work the second time around.

Mark did an excellent job painting the interior of our house. He painted the great room area including the living room, dining room, mud room and kitchen. He also painted the ceiling for the entire area. Mark was very thorough in his prep work and meticulous in finishing detail work. The result was an outstanding paint job that completely refreshed the look and feel of our home. When it comes time to redo our floors I will call Mark without hesitation. I recommend Gotcha Covered Paint and Tile completely.

I called upon Ron Alexander, proprietor of Treasure Valley Revival, LLC for a storm door replacement. First of all, I wish to say Ron is such a kind, yet magnanimously intelligent, and very skilled craftsman. What drew me to hire Ron was his expertise in design work. I called Ron and he was over to our home within the hour as he stated he would be. A very pleasant man to talk with while he diligently removed our old storm door, and then replaced with a storm door I supplied him with. He took no time at all, and I know I received a very fair bid, as well as a well-crafted replacement storm door. Ron certainly measured up to the challenge, and his work was of grand quality! I would recommend Ron, and absolutely I will hire Ron Alexander, again.

We hired Apex Home Solutions to do a full remodel on a home built over 100 years ago. The home was in original condition and needed extensive work. I had a pretty general set of ideas about what I wanted done and after going over the general details with John and Theresa we were able to sit down in their full service office and go over details including full design and materials. John and Theresa did a great job working through the general construction details but also the layout and design. Theresa designed the kitchen, made suggestions for materials, color and layout of the finished product. We ended up taking almost every suggestion they made. This was because they were good. We accepted their bid and discussed the work. The project was important to be on time, in scope and on budget. Apex met all items successfully. I would certainly recommend using them; I will again.

Chris did a lot of artwork for my website, www.learnjazzstandards.com, including our album artwork, our Skype lesson ads, and our LJS play along download ad. Chris was great to work with, timely, and the design was awesome! I give Chris my highest possible recommendation.

We had a very positive experience with Larry. He put in a great deck for us, and the following year we called him again for a kitchen remodel. He is very concientous and fair in his pricing. This was our first time house project so we didn't always know what questions to ask but Larry brought a lot of things to our attention so we could make better decisions.

We are very happy that we hired Isaac to do our project of adding built-in floating bookshelves. He was very responsive, very professional, and always punctual. He was also respectful of our vision for the project while offering his expertise and helpful suggestions when needed. I took his advice on several things and I am very happy with the result. After he provided a reasonable quote, I decided to hire him, and he came back with a formal contract ready for me to review and sign which included a one-year workmanship guarantee, and I appreciate that level of professionalism. He is talented and a great contractor. He was also very kind to my dog and we also appreciated that he very conscientiously made sure that our back gate was closed behind him so she could not get out. I would certainly hire him again.

I had Kurt change my kitchen faucet and WOW he was very professional, respectful to my house and my pet. He replied to my need list on thumb tack, he kept me informed when he could be at my house and text me when he was on the way AND was on time. Come to find out he does other side work and I had him do me up a quote on some hardwood flooring. When I am ready he will be the first person I call.

John was recommended to us by a neighbor who used him for a total remodel ( including digging a basement). He has remodeled our kitchen, master, master bath and now some basement egress windows. He is efficient, holds to his original estimate, creative in trying to produce a great result at a great price. His crew is fantastic and always leaves the work space clean and safe at the end of the day. I recommend him to friends and neighbors all the time!

Donald has done quite a few jobs for me. From landscaping, painting and some remodeling. I have always been more than satisfied with his work, and I have found him to be more than fair on his pricing. Willing to listen to my ideas as well as offer his suggestions. His work ethics are impeccable and the respect he has shown me is greatly appreciated. Yes, I will look first to him for anything I need done. Anita Montgomery

A 40 year old split level house in need of renovation, Marc installed all new windows, replaced the roof with a new metal roof, completely renovated the bathroom with my own design of beautiful ceramic tile throughout, installed hardwood flooring throughout after removing a collapsed ceiling and replacing and finishing the new ceiling and walls. His work is meticulous and thorough, and he works fast; once he begins a job for you, he will work tirelessly and efficiently until it is completed. He considers it part of the job to clean up afterwards, and his pricing is competitive. I was happy with the entire project and Marce was pleasant and attentive to my concerns and requests. I would highly recommend Marc to anyone wanting quality, personalized work at a reasonable price, completed on time.

John has done many updates for me over the years. The last project was changing two small closets into one larger. He did a cedar lined closet with double layered rods and shelves! It has made organizing clothes and extra storage so simple! In the past he did a kitchen remodel, dining room and living room update and has added shelving and tile floors downstairs. I have had him replace and update my windows and front door. It is an on going project because I haven't been able to afford to do it all at one time. I have been very excited about each and every project!

We found Joe at the perfect time during our remodel project. We hired him to install the trim in our house which turned into adding kitchen cabinet trim, tiling both bathroom showers, and installing a kitchen backsplash and range hood. We also roped him into some smaller projects like cutting our butcher block island down and installing a roll out trash in a kitchen cabinet. We have been so pleased with the work he has done, both in terms of quality and speed. He has been so accommodating to all of our questions and concerns and has worked around our diy schedule and projects. Above all we have been most grateful to the care he has taken of our house. There are so many contractors out there to choose from but it had been good to know that when we return from work there won’t be scuffs in the walls or banged up floors or a huge mess, which had been our experience with previous contractors. We continue to hire him for projects because he cares for our home the same way we would.

I'm a real estate agent and property investor with over 13 years of experience. Recently I had a project that I was able to split off 2 lots from a parcel and I needed custom duplexes designed for each lot. I've worked with Matt on a couple other large remodels ($100k+) in the past on which he did a wonderful job, so he was the first person I called for this job. He was quick, professional, and came up with several ideas and suggestions that were a great blend of cost efficiency and space functionality for both duplexes. He also helped with the overall site design and lot sizing, which maximized the size of the duplexes, the expected rental rates, and overall ROI. He was quick to respond to phone calls and email requests, and it made my whole experience wonderful. I highly recommend Matt and am very impressed with his work.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

        • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
        • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
        • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
        • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

        • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
        • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
        • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
        • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
