I would like to spread the word about Jim Spitzer and his company, Inside Out. It is somewhat stressful to look for someone to complete home improvement based on advertisements. If you are like me, you want to hear about someone else's actual experience with a company. Jim Spitzer is an experienced, talented carpenter. We hired him to build a patio cover and were so pleased that we now have a long list of home improvement projects for him to do. Our patio cover turned out to be beautiful and extremely well built. Jim is very precise, knowledgeable, and caring about his work. He communicates about every aspect of the job, is very fair in his pricing, cleans up the job site each day, and is punctual and friendly. You absolutely cannot go wrong with Inside Out if you need building, painting or improvements on your home.

We recently employed Altecca for a modest remodel in our home. Troy, Jay and crew had good suggestions and worked hard creating a functional, attractive utility room for us from 2 smaller useless rooms. They also demolished a defunct hot tub, tore down and reworked our deck, put in a closet and moved electrical and plumbing utilities for the laundry. All in all we are quite pleased with their work and their pleasant, professional attitude. We highly recommend the Altecca team for anyone looking to remodel. We would definitely use them again.

Home remodel included expansion of dining room (7.5' x 15.5'); enclosing back porch (12' x 16') as a 4-season room (HVAC); remodel Master Bath; re-tile double-sided fireplace; add 400 sf deck. Around $50K project lasting about 10 weeks (mid July thru beginning of Oct 2013). Exceptional project results. Very detailed-oriented. Excellent communication. Nate was meticulous in his work product, and he made some very worthwhile suggestions that made the project results better, esthetically. He didn't hesitate to ask the Boise City inspectors for a courtesy inspection meeting, on-site, to discuss any construction issues. I was always informed and included in any of these discussions. While I hired some of the subcontractors (electrical and wood flooring), he didn't hesitate to coordinate his work efforts with theirs. His subcontractors (HVAC, Deck Shade Structure, and Painting) did exceptional work, as well. While there were a few 'glitches,' Nate went the extra mile to make things right. Very happy with the project outcome, and all our friends and family are in "awe" of the results. While Nate is "young" (I'm a senior citizen), he has many demonstrable remodeling trade skills, and possesses a great sense of customer service. I would and will hire Nate again, and highly recommend his construction/re-modeling company.

He put together a trampoline for me while I was out of town. When I got back it was put together, the boxes were stacked neatly and it was in perfect condition. This was a 15' trampoline (above ground) with safety netting. Used Google Wallet so it was easy to pay too!

I had Taylor build a deck for me on top of my existing patio. I was extremely pleased with the work that he did for me. He built it exactly how I wanted it including aligning the posts of the pergola so they didn't block my view out my back windows.

Matt Fletcher built an incredible deck for us. We had been planning to replace our aging deck for many years. We had many ideas about what we wanted to do, and Matt was able to take our ideas, improve them, and build us a beautiful deck! Matt’s attention to detail and to getting everything right was impressive. We felt like he was building his in deck. His craftsmanship and care are evident every day we spend on the deck with our family and friends. We really appreciate Matt’s superb work.

I have known Nick's work for many years. Some he has done for me, some for other people/projects. Nick is an excellent finish carpenter. His trim work is impeccable, same for custom cabinetry. There is no job too big or small. He has built everything from homes to handicap ramps to animal enclosures. He doesn't cut corners and won't use anything but materials that will last and function well. For me personally, Nick has hung cabinets and doors in my home, done interior and exterior painting, deck repair and built a large storage shed. He was always on time and delivered what he promised. I have been very pleased to see that Nick has branched out into some very creative pieces for pets. The craftsmanship on his "Cat Condo" is incredible. I hope the concept takes off. If you want a job done right the first time, Nick's your guy.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

      Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
