Laura is an amazing therapist! She was able to help me with solving problems related to employment decision, life style changes, family relationships and personal challenges. She has a keen focus on listening to the concerns. Most importantly, she provides real strategies, solutions and suggestions in getting the help that you need. I have anxiety and I am learning how manage it. Most importantly , I especially enjoyed the convenience of having our sessions over the telephone as we were in two different states.

I am beyond grateful to Margo for helping me save my very troubled relationship through couples therapy several years ago. Our relationship relationship was not only salvaged but became stronger than ever! Through this therapeutic process, core PTSD issues were identified that I was going to need to work through. Being a clinician myself of 30 plus years, I am very impressed with the cutting edge therapeutic approaches that Margo and the Juniper staff employ for the best evidence based outcomes possible. I continued into individual therapy and through these treatment modalities including EMDR my life has changed tremendously. I have an understanding of myself now that would not have been possible without Margo's kind, compassionate and therapeutic approach. I have referred friends to the Juniper Center and they have had similar experiences seeing some of the other therapists. Very thankful indeed that the Juniper Center provides such great and consistent support.

Idania was awesome! I hurt my back and needed someone quickly. She was incredibly responsive, made the appointment quickly, and was even early for the appointment. She was so good at finding and taking care of the problem areas, great great great massage. I felt better that night and the next day was almost 100%. I delivered my first child in May of 2013, and used Veronica as my doula. I was originally drawn to her because she is a yoga instructor, and as a seasoned yogini and instructor myself I knew this fact alone would provide me with comfort while in labor. As my labor began Veronica was immediately very attentive to my needs and listened to the details I gave her about my progress. Once she arrived at my apartment she immediately started to provide me with support and began to guide the other individuals on my birthing team through ways they could comfort me as well. Throughout my labor Veronica never left my side and made sure I stayed surrounded by positive energy. As we arrived at the hospital and my contractions began to intensify she kept me calm and focused. As I was transitioning into delivery and felt as though I couldn’t keep going, she helped me push through my doubt and ultimately achieve the natural birth I wanted. Veronica was an amazing doula and support person through my entire pregnancy, labor and delivery. I will definitely use her again in the future and highly recommend her to anyone looking for a calm & comforting spirit during their pregnancy, labor and delivery.

My name is Lynzie and I am 29 years old. I started smoking at the early age of 15 years old and was smoking up to a pack a day by the time I was 16. I was an active person playing softball and doing cheerleading but smoking definitely caused me from ever being able to play to my full potential. It caused me many setbacks throughout the years. By the age of 24, I had been hospitalized many times for different reasons. I was always sick. I developed viral meningitis, cysts on my skin, and many different viruses that because of smoking, my body couldn’t fight. After almost two years of being in and out of the hospital and after seeing over 20 different doctors, I knew I had to change something. When my 25th birthday was approaching, I realized that I was coming close to ten years of being a smoker and I just couldn’t let that happen. After trying different methods to quit and being unable to do so, I finally decided On June 16th 2012, to go see Renee, a hypnotherapist, to be hypnotized to break my bad habit. Although I was skeptical at first, I was desperate and I needed to try something. The hypnosis sessions were very relaxing, comfortable, and a truly great experience. And the best part about the hypnosis sessions were that this past June, I got to proudly celebrate 4 whole years of being smoke free! I am the healthiest that I’ve been in years. I have not felt this good since I was very young. I am able to work out now to my full potential. I have not been sick in years! And Im 7 months pregnant with my first child and feel amazing! My life has been forever changed and I could have never done it without the help of hypnotherapist Renee Oswald. I feel so blessed to have been given a second chance for a healthy life. No words could ever describe how thankful I am for Renee and this opportunity she gave me. I truly recommend that anyone trying to break a bad habit or pick up better habits, go to Renee Oswald for a hypnosis session. She is a wonderful person and her hypnosis really works!

In 2010 the tragic loss of our daughter left us barely able to breath, let alone function & process the grief and trauma. We struggled to find hope and healing for both ourselves & our 13 yr old son. After several years of working with different therapists to no avail, we met Dr. Davero. We found her expertise, empathy, respect & commitment far exceeded even the highest standards of patient care & treatment. Her ability to provide our family with the tools & understanding necessary to regain our footing in all aspects of our life is a testament to a doctor whose vast knowledge and expertise in many areas of mental health treatment is equal only to her compassion & devotion to those in her care.

I've been to other therapists (at other hospitals), and Dr. Holec with Resilience Psychological Services, by far, proved to be the most helpful of them all. She is compassionate, relatable, and easy to talk to. She has a flexible schedule. She is knowledgeable on various therapy methods. She provided me with the resources and support I needed during several challenges I experienced. It is obvious that Dr. Holec is passionate about the work she does. I would highly recommend Dr. Holec!

I will forever be indebted to Sarah for all the things she has done for me. I would recommend anyone that wants to turn their life around to work with Sarah and trust what she says because she has exceptional skills as a therapist. DBT/Mindfulness has change my life so much. If you are willing to put the work in you can do amazing things with your life. You do not have to stay in the same. What if cycles of life. I don't even take medication anymore and I use mindfulness and meditation too. It is never too late and I am using the skills Sarah taught me and they work. I have been using Mindfulness now for over 2 years and I am happy to say that it has changed my life. A couple years ago I was going to end my life but then I met Sarah and I am in such a better place. I would recommend Sarah to anyone. You are in control of your destiny, so make the most of it. Tom Goforth is an amazing person! He was my husband's therapist for over 30 years and he also was our couples' therapist. The trust in and gratitude we have for Tom led my husband, Jeff, and I to ask him if he would be the officiant at our wedding in August of 2000. He graciously obliged. Years later, in 2008, our son, Ethan, was born. We named him Ethan "Thomas" after Tom Goforth. Tom has done so much for Jeff and for us as a couple. We are indebted. Thank you, Tom! We love you!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

  • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
  • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
  • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
  • Overcoming addictions.
  • Managing chronic illness.
  • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

  • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
  • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
  • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
  • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
  • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
  • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
  • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
  • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
  • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
  • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
  • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
  • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
  • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
  • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
  • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
  • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
  • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
  • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
