Juan and his crew were great. I contacted them on a Saturday afternoon for a quote and they stopped by later that same afternoon. Juan was super knowledgeable about our project. And for those of you who don't know a lot about landscaping and gardening he's your man. He had a lot of solid information about where to put plants, where not to put plants, how to water the sod... etc. No question was considered stupid. In other words, he did not condescend to me, which I found refreshing. Nor did he try to hike up the price. His prices were super competitive with other bids we received. He was there when he said he'd be there and the project was completed in a very short time. His crew was very patient and polite while we were deciding where to put the sod line and also when asked to move some of the plants. They also cleaned up before they left. He's a good man to know when it comes to landscaping!

Linda's team was hired to spread topsoil in some very large garden beds and rim them with stones. They also removed several overgrown bushes. They spread well over 20 yards of dirt and several truckloads of stones and did a fantastic job. They were quick, and very neat with their work when finished you could not even see they had been there other than the beautiful jobs they did cutting in, spreading dirt and rimming my beds with stone.

Jimmy's workers were consummate professionals: quick, picked up and recycled every single thing they removed, and explained everything that needed to be explained to my husband. 100% satisfaction. Afterward, my husband and stood there and pondered how long it would have taken us to do this work. It was money well spent. The job included trimming bushes and shrubs, pulling out a dead bush, removing weeds in the garden area, and cutting down dead perennials. Then they spread mulch. It looks beautiful!

I worked with Rodolfo. He came on time for the quote. We agreed to a fare price for the work. He and his crew arrived on time the day of service and did an excellent job. My services involved fall clean up which consisted of a gutter clean, leaf and garden bed cleanup, mow and edging of lawn.

I asked Edgar to come to my house to estimate. His price was reasonable therefore we hired him immediately. At this time, he did not come with his crew yet because he came only to estimate. However, he did what he can do for the day and accomplished a lot! My family was impressed. Definitely , I will rehire him for future garden work and will recommend him to my friends ! Keep up the good work, Edgar!

I can’t say enough about Carolina and her team! We live in Chicago, but have a goodly piece of property for the city. Our regular guy has taken a sabbatical from residential projects so I was scrambling to find someone who a) knew plants b) had a crew and c)had an eye. To be frank, my garden looked a bit like Ms. Haversham’s after all the rain this season. Weeds everywhere—horrible! Carolina Irani responded to my desperate plea and offered a quote that I felt was just a tad high—but after reviewing her credentials I decided to move forward. I was impressed by her extraordinary communication! Great follow up, lots of emails back and forth as I tried to describe what I needed to have done. Uber responsive! We settled on a date that worked for both of us (took about two weeks) but she always offered lots of alternatives. When the crew arrived, what really impressed me is that she herself spent about an hour making sure we were all on the same page. She is a lovely, calm, professional woman who clearly knows her stuff. I am a gardener and my worst nightmare is somebody who pulls out a plant that took me 4 years to grow because they didn’t know what it was! Not Carolina. This woman knows her stuff!!! Over the 4-5 hours I saw 3 crew members working non stop. Boy are they organized! Somebody pruning, somebody cleaning, somebody trimming. A well oiled machine. Plus, she suggested edging on the garden beds (YAY!) which made everything have a really pulled together look. I could not BELIEVE how beautiful everything was. Now, I can begin the process of refurbishing the beds and restoring the grass. She even trimmed low hanging branches on my trees. When I got home tonight I took a moment to pause. My fairyland garden is taking shape again! Thanks Carolina and crew. If you are considering hiring her, DO it. You won’t be disappointed. I’ve further engaged her for bi monthly maintenance. A joy to work with and a job extremely well done!!!

Patrick responded the same day I posted my request for help with a severely overgrown garden. When he came over to give me an estimate (on a Saturday!) he was also ready to work. His quote was amazingly affordable and he started work that day. He has done a beautiful job so far and I'm very much looking forward to hiring him for a lot more work in the future! He's a super- personable, hard working young man and I predict he's going to be very successful in the future.

Joni designed our homes Landscaping in 2007 and took it thru design to implementation. Since they we have had My Secret Garden back annually for maintenance and enhancements as our budget allowed. Including landscape lighting, Garden and flower bed maintenance. I can't more highly recommend Joni and her team! We have referred her to several friends and all have had great things to say after her designs were implemented.

Excellent communication regarding work to be performed. Work performed was of very high quality. Very satisfied. You can certainly pay much less for landscaping services, but in my experience you definitely get what you pay for - cheapest price = lowest quality work. Paul treats his customers with personalized attention to their landscaping needs.

My experience with North Shore Gardens was excellent. Juan was very professional and pointed out a number of issues which other service providers missed. He gave me a very detailed proposal. Did the work promptly and well. His team was courteous and worked very hard. Juan replaced the entire outside drainage system on one side of my house where the existing 40 year old pipes were broken by tree roots. I am very happy with his work. I will be using him again to address a similar issue on the other side of my house. I had not done work with North Shore Gardens previously and asked for references. Juan supplied multiple references all of whom spoke highly of him and his company. I now see why. I am recommending North Shore Gardens to my neighbors (I live in a planned community where the homes are 40 + years old) all of whom face the same issue as I did.

    About

My work focuses on community sustainability by empowering residents to grow food for themselves and share it within the community. My work is not limited to consulting, it has an education component that provides information not found in a nursery center or Home Depot. GrowAsis is the only business of its kind on the southside of Chicago that practices environmental sustainability and earth stewardship to combat food insecurity. Working in the earth everyday to grow food and encouraging people of all capabilities to do the same thing is a blessing and privilege for me. Because people of all walks of life need food, I like to use that common bond to open up conversations on garden life, healthy food, and effective growing techniques.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
