I showed up at Swadeep's place a couple of days before my GMAT test. Within the first couple of hours, Swadeep figured out that that my weak spots were the foundational concepts of math. This was extremely important for the rest of the preparation and I am glad Swadeep excels at it. Swadeep then started from the very basics which proved to be extremely valuable in understanding not only the basic math concepts but also the advance concepts later on. One of the best things I liked was how he was able to connect the dots between various concepts. For example, I had not realize that the equation of a circle, the Pythagorean theorem and the formula for the distance between two points are all the same. Swadeep also explained me how to quickly work with numbers, squares, cubes, etc. Recognizing these numbers in the questions greatly simplified the process of solving them within a minute instead of my usual 3-4 minute approach. Another thing that I liked was the fact that Swadeep let me ponder over the questions first instead of giving me hints or telling me the solution. He made ME think. This was a very good confidence builder before the exam. After solving each problem, he would go a step further and show me one or two more alternate methods of solving the same problem from a different perspective. Overall, Swadeep has been one of the best teachers I have had for math. He had been extremely patient with me while teaching me the basics. Within just a couple of days, my math score between my mock tests and the actual test shot up by 30 points. I was able to use most of the concepts he taught effortlessly during the exam. I will continue studying with him for a longer time before my next exam. Thank you. :)

Jeff was working with my son on getting ready for ACT this year. My son is a junior at high school. He is a good student, however, wasn't satisfied with his initial ACT score. We found Jeff through Thumbtack based on customer reviews. I'm glad we did. After several lessons with Jeff, my son's ACT score went 5 points up. Jeff is great about building lessons around subjects and topics that require more attention. The test taking strategies that he teaches are definitely very helpful. Jeff is very punctual and responsible. He was willing to accommodate my son's busy schedule. I highly recommend Jeff to students (and parents) who are looking for help with ACT and SAT.

Karin joined Insight Education only a few weeks before our SAT/ACT Test Prep Intensive Boot Camps were about to start. But she just came in took a test, excelled at it, got the curriculum and conquered the class! We really didn't have to worry about anything with her in the classroom. She would always be prepared with the daily class agenda and assignments and knew exactly what she wanted from her students on each class day- for a class as well as one-on-one tutoring. I don't think i ever remember her fumbling on a grammar concept or not being able to correctly explain anything related to SAT/ACT English to the students. The feedback we got from students and parents was phenomenal- they loved her pedagogy! Excellent score improvements across students on our weekly diagnostic tests.

During my junior year of high school, I was struggling to improve my math and science scores on the ACT. But after being referred to Hntsa, my scores quickly improved. Hntsa was able to use visual learning and cogent explanations to help me better understand how to tackle this test. Hntsa believed that practice questions were the key to success; his methods proved to be greatly beneficial. I would attempt practice questions while he was there to patiently explain how to solve the problems when I got stuck. His line of thinking helped to improve the way I looked at the test, and I credit him to significantly improving my scores. Thanks, Hntsa!!

We wanted my 7th grade son to strengthen his writing skills over the summer. With high school quickly approaching, we were hoping for him to enter with solid writing skills so his focus could be on the content of his work without struggles with language and structure. Kendra Hadnott was the perfect person to help him with this. Every part of her process is unique and customized. We started with a meeting to define our goals. Not only did she focus on our objectives, but also our child’s overall interests. He is obsessed with soccer and it was exciting as we sat down the next week to go over her tutoring plan for the summer how she incorporated reading and writing work that included his favorite soccer players, his friends, current teen technology, and more. He was thrilled to write about these topics and was really engaged in her lessons. Throughout the summer they worked on everything from spelling, vocabulary, grammar, language use, sentence structure, and essay structure. Each time they met I received a progress report on his accomplishments. He went into eighth grade with improved confidence and it showed in his writing. He tested into Honors English at OPRF and we are certain that Kendra’s tutoring helped to get him to that level. He will continue to work with her this summer to be certain he will hit the ground running next year. I highly recommend Kendra for your child’s tutoring. She is extremely professional, engaging, and it is evident that working with children is her calling.

We brought in Navin to help our daughter for her preparation with SAT prep with just a month left. Navin was very flexible to begin with driving down to our home or holding the class at his place. As days progressed Navin helped us narrow down on what we needed to focus on and drilled down the concepts. My daughter would look forward to the class as she realized that her skills were getting stronger and stronger and I attribute that Navin's calm and passionate approach to teaching. Overall it was a very pleasant experience and I highly recommend Navin.

My son did not want to go to tutoring, but a friend's son had found Learning Ascent helpful, so I dragged him in because he earned 37% on his math test. He earned 85% on the next test after a few weeks of tutoring, then 100% on a test. Now he has the hunger for success. My other son goes to them now too.

My son did not like being tutored. Mr. Stehlik is the tutor that my friend highly recommended. When I proposed to him to get tutoring from Mr. Stehlik for ACT, not surprisingly to get the answer-- immediately declined. I could not do anything until my son told me his practice ACT test scores-- his scores during practice had been in the range 33-34. At this point I forced him to go to see Mr. Stehlik. I pre-arranged with Val for a 6 lesson package but in case my son did not want to go further, he would only do one lesson. Nervously, I asked my son when he finished the 1st lesson, "do you feel helpful?" Surprisely, he answered "yes". "Would you like to continue for 5 more lessons?" My son said firmly "yes". The 6 tutoring lessons were done in a period of 3 weeks and then my son went for ACT test in school in April. He told me he did not feel well during test because of acute cold syndrome started in that test day morning. I then registered him again for June ACT test, thinking that he may need to repeat. Three weeks later, my son asked me, "do you think we can cancel the June ACT test and get the registration money back?" I became nervous: "what score you got?" "Composite 36", the voice came calmly and pleasantly. We highly recommend Mr. Stehlik for ACT tutoring. He is like an excellent carpenter, able to find a small hole and put the nail on the hole to make the whole piece perfect and firm!

I could not have been happier with the results from using More Than S.A.T. in preparation for the ACT. While my older children had used other prep courses for the ACT with satisfactory results, I decided to make a change for my youngest child. More Than S.A.T. had a more unique approach to studying for the ACT. More Than S.A.T’s academic coach was able to tailor a study program specific to my son’s strengths and weaknesses. What’s more, the consultant’s suggestions as to how to manage the test, while taking it, were very beneficial. The result: a 6 point increase. Thank you, More Than S.A.T.!

I used Matt as a tutor for my college level algebra class. I've always struggled with math and Matt was very patient with me even when I had a hard time understanding the material. I'm the type of person who has a hard time asking others for help and Matt didn't make me feel dumb about not knowing the answer. I wish I would've had a tutor in high school because I've really learned a lot and my grade truly reflects the outstanding tutoring I received from Matt. I am so thankful for the help from Matt and I really liked that his schedule was open enough for me to meet at different times when I needed access with homework help or test prep. If you are thinking about hiring a tutor Matt is your guy- you won't be sorry!

Mr. K's math camp was a wonderful addition to the Price Hill and surrounding communities as well as Price Hill Recreation Center, where the program was conducted. He produced amazing results with some of our most challenging kids. Mr. K combined Montessori, holistic theory and common sense to help focus kids so they could learn and bring up test results. As both parents and kids enthusiastically embraced this program, it was always well attended. The only downside was, the program had to end due to a loss of funding. We certainly miss the Math Camp as it excellently served our littlest citizens in a comprehensive and very caring way.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

What is ACT test prep?

The ACT is a college entrance exam taken by students (typically in their junior year of high school) to determine admission eligibility and merit-based scholarship eligibility. The test may be taken as many times as desired and is not limited to high school juniors. Originally the acronym stood for American College Testing, but now ACT is the stand-alone name. ACT prep is a way for students to strategically prepare for test-taking. ACT prep helps students improve scores, practice taking the test, learn test-taking strategies, and improve material comprehension. Students can get help with ACT prep tutors in one-on-one sessions, via group tutoring lessons, in online self-study programs, or online with a tutor in video calls. The ACT test covers:

  • English
  • Science understanding and reasoning
  • Math
  • Reading
  • Writing essay (optional)

How do you prepare for the ACT?

The ACT is a universally accepted college readiness exam. There are multiple ways to prepare for the exam. One-on-one ACT prep tutoring is one of the most effective ways for students to ready themselves for the test. A tutor who specializes in ACT prep will coach the student on the type of material they can expect while also working specifically with topics that are more challenging for that particular student. Group tutoring sessions are a more cost-effective way to reap the benefits of an ACT prep instructor; a suggestion is to gather a group of four friends or classmates to share the cost. Professional tutors often recommend that test prep begin approximately three months prior to the exam. Cramming — unfortunately — doesn’t provide the same score results as consistent study, test-related homework, and practice exams do. Weekly two-hour learning sessions are what many pro tutors suggest for their college exam prep students. For top test-taking performance, tutors usually provide work throughout the week and the weekly session is used to cement knowledge and address weak areas. Math is a hard topic for most students, so plan accordingly.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.
