We hired him to install new tub, do plumbing, and install the new shower valve for the 2nd floor bathroom we're remodeling by ripping everything out. Here is what follows:
1- First visit: He shows up for estimate, we were told he will do it the same day, but fine that usually doesn't happen since it takes sometime. We agreed on pricing and setup a time for him to do the installation.
2- Second visit: He shows up on time the following week with another person and took him 4 hrs for the job, he cuts the studs to squeeze in the tub which doesn't make sense to me, how did original same size tub was installed? He run multiple water tests and leave. Later in the day, I run a test to make sure everything looks fine and there is no leakage. I found a big leak on the drain pipe by simply putting my hand behind the tub. Later in the day, we started to get Luke warm water when we turned on the hot water. I was going to call the water heater company, but made us suspicious that it started to happen right after he installed the new valve. I open up the instructions and found out that he forgot to put bypass and luckily found the bypass in garbage bag, after putting it back in we started to get hot water. I mentioned it on his third visit, he had no answer. I call him to come and fix the leak.
3- Third visit: He shows up after a week by changing date and time multiple times. I showed him the leak and goes out come back in with can of spray and sprays it all over the drain pipe with some purple cement by putting his hand behind the tub. Try it again, leak still there, he sprays it more and finished two cans, leak is still there. Tells me that he needs to remove the tub and will come back again with another person next week.
4- Fourth visit: Comes back with another person, they both remove the tub. Pin point the leakage on the new drain pipe he installed. He sprays more of that purple cement on the pipe and leak is still there. Tells me that he needs to replace the pipe and would have to cut the pipe further down which will require excess from ceiling from our kitchen and he would have to come back to do this. Since I had no choice I agreed and we setup a time for him to come back.
5- Fifth visit: Both come back the following week after multiple date/time changes. He cuts the ceiling open and blames me that the leak is caused during removal of the old tub, are you freaking kidding me when you can actually clearly see the leak on his newly installed drain pipe. He tells me that he needs to grab material from home depot and ask me for more money for material and labor. I felt bad and agreed to pay him half of what he asked for. Both come back with material, cut the pipes, and install the new pipes, check for leakages and leave. I run a test later in the day find another leakage near the joint of two pipes which is again his newly installed pipe. I call him and setup time and date for him to come back again.
6- Sixth visit: He changes date/time multiple times and finally shows up the following week on Saturday afternoon. I show him the leak, and he had the drain kit with him already which tells me that he knew exactly what mistake he made, but ignored it. So he removes the pipe that he had cut short which caused leak from the sides and installed a new bigger pipe. Test it and leave. Later in the week, I filled the whole tub to test and found leak near the drain and tub. I could clearly see the gasket wasn't properly in place. The top drain was so tight that there was barely any space on sides for water to go in, I mentioned it to him, answer was it has to be like that. Again, called him and setup time for him to come following week and he started arguing that I called him after couple days when I clearly mentioned him that I was out of town and didn't test it until I came back.
7- Seventh Visit: He shows up on following Saturday after changing multiple date/time. Open the ceiling, I pin point him the location of leak. He asks me to fill up the tub for testing, while I am filling up the tub he goes out quickly grabs the caulking and quietly puts the caulking around the drain while I am filling up the tub on upper floor. I get down and asks him why would you put caulking rather taking drain out, adjusting the gasket and putting it back. He ignored me and answer I got was this it won't leak now. I told him that I can't test now because caulking will need sometime to dry, and answer I got was " if you don't see water dripping without touching meaning there is no leak", what kind of theory is this? Water was never dripping when I found other leaks. He leaves before I was even able to test it.
A simple tub installation that we hired him for lasted over a month. He is clearly not capable of doing any plumbing work. We will not hire him again for anything else. I have zero experience in this, but I would've done a better job by simply watching a youtube video and reading instructions. Not to mention, he installed tub by following zero manufacturers recommended instructions (no stringer, no mortar base, drilling holes in tub flange?), when I brought it up I was told he doing it right. I didn't wanted to take a risk and hired him to get professionally done which I regret now. Our water bill went up by $100 by simply wasting so much water on leak testing. We also have to fix the ceiling now. I asked him for refund multiple times so I can get it done from someone else which he totally ignored it. Per my wife, he just took advantage of me for being nice. Please save your money, pay little more, and hire someone who can get it done on first try. We were just lucky that we didn't hired him for total bathroom remodel or else we would've not found out about the leakages until months later when after ceiling would show up with water stains. I give him 1 star only for responding back to calls/texts in timely manner.
