It was a pleasure working with Laura. She is cordial and professional. She showed genuine understanding of the message I wanted to deliver in my speech. Laura makes every effort to accommodate your schedule. She knows how to work with you until you find the right “voice” for your message. She’s adept in editing and can hone a message down to its essence by helping you to find just the right word, concept, or sentence. I appreciated her commitment and dedication to helping me write the speech I felt confident in delivering.

I initially experienced Tammy's writing coaching as a participant in her "Crafting and Inspirational Blog" class. Her teaching style is dynamic and experiential, giving great examples for the concepts she teaches and then encouraging her students to try their hand at it. Her follow-up and suggestions are always beneficial. My experience with that class was so great that I hired Tammy. We meet over the phone weekly to edit my newsletter articles. When I am struggling to find the words for what I want to say, she asks exactly the right questions to enable me to find those words. And, when I'm having a hard time coming up with a topic, we brainstorm ideas. In addition, Tammy writes a weekly newsletter with writing tips that help solidify what I am learning. The process is always full of learning and fun. Tammy is absolutely fabulous in every way!

When I need solutions, I call Faith. I can not begin to express how great it has been to work with her. I met Faith while serving as Marketing Director of a University. She was contracted for numerous editing projects. Later, Faith assisted me in transitioning to my present entrepreneurial role. We collaborated in web content creation/editing. Faith has a strong background in business services, accounting, and compliance. Yet, she enjoys writing and editing - what a combination. Her business recommendations have been invaluable and her excitement is phenomenal. You should see for yourself. Faith has my recommendation!

I sought Marissa's help when writing my personal statement for medical school applications. She was instrumental in helping me organize my thoughts into a clear and concise piece of writing. Thanks to her my personal statement was probably better written than all of the essays I ever wrote in college. She taught me style tools and techniques that I continue to use in my writing. She also made the process enjoyable. I actually looked forward to editing and revising my writing with her. I plan to seek her help again when it comes time to write my personal statement for residency applications.

Lucille helped me with editing papers for my Master's degree. I was so pleased with the results, and hired her to help my daughter with her High School creative writing assignments! When I learned that she also did tutoring for reading, I asked her to help my elementary school Granddaughter, with reading comprehension. She has a special way of teaching which made the work fun while achieving success. Her writing abilities are evident in her published books for children and adults. I have read and enjoyed all of them. I highly recommend her services.

Katy did an outstanding job with editing my Master's Thesis project. She responded quickly to my project and communicated well throughout the process. I had a fast approaching deadline and she was able to edit 85 pages in one week's time. Her work is high quality and her knowledge is evident. I am a very happy client and I plan on using Katy again in the future!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
