I like my new floor! I had Andean and his partner (1) screw down the subsurface to reduce squeaking and (2) install the hard wood flooring. Andean was responsive to come for the estimate. He gave a reasonable price, started work on time and finished on time. I enjoyed watching this team doing their work. They were receptive to my questions and concerns. The finished product looked good. Two small improvements could be made: (1) some n-shaped nails from the nail gun are too close to the wood surface /edge (vs on the wood-tongue) that made the wood covering the nail stuck out (heaved a tiny bit) thus looking a tiny bit damaged. Should avoid this. (2) when the installer put the wood putty to cover the nail holes, he appeared to smear the extra putty off his finger on the near-by area, thus there are small patches of smear that I need to clear off in many places. No big deal on my part but again this could have avoided by wiping the extra putty on a piece of paper. Overall I am happy with the work and I will recommend the service.

Chano and his crew installed and finished new hardwood flooring in our house and we love it! His crew did an outstanding job and was very clean. They were very attentive to what we needed, easy to get in touch with, and their price was very fair. I also really appreciated him making a suggestion about what he thought would look better in my house which actually made the project cost LESS money. My wife and I felt like his main concern was making us happy with the job and not making as much money as he could squeeze out of us. I would happily recommend A Plus Decorating to anyone and will definitely use them again in the future!

I hired Studio flooring to install prefinished hardwood in a challenging 100 year old house. The end product was flawless despite the House being out of square in a few key areas. Piotr was very professional and a pleasure to work with. The job was done exactly when we were told it would be, and the quality is outstanding. I highly recommend Studio flooring for any flooring or trim project you have.

Working with Peter from Idc Flooring was an absolute pleasure. He was an excellent communicator, both clear and fast, from the initial phone call through the final walk through of the finished project. Peter''s pricing and contract were very transparent, and his work was phenomenal. He along with a team member were able to bring my prewar hardwood floors back to life. The floors previously had vinyl flooring on top of them which left glue on the surface. Peter removed the glue, sanded the floors, and refinished the wood. Overall, I highly recommend Peter and his team for their professionalism, quality, and value.

Radu did a great job restoring a red oak floor that had not been maintained for over 60 years. Through his expertise in wood flooring and floor refinishing techniques, he advised knowledgeably in selecting stain color and worked tirelessly to address gouges and other anomalies in the original flooring. He and his team were exceptionally professional and courteous throughout the process. As I finish a multi-year rehabilitation of the entire house, visitors comment first and most emphatically about the hardwood floor.

After having quotes from various flooring companies we were starting to get discouraged. Either prices were too high, companies wouldn't want the work or even showed up the day of and didnt complete the work. A friend told me about this company and we are so grateful and thrilled with the outcome! They were reasonably priced, extremely knowledgeable, helped with every question and had a great selection. The installers were courteous, polite and did a wonderful job. We will recommend this company to all our friends!

Michael Carso, the owner of Advanced Flooring is a thief. Beware! He asks for the money for the materials up front. Foolishly, I paid him $3700.00 cash up front in order to get a discount. Big mistake!!! He took the money and now 9 weeks later, the job has not even started and he will not respond to texts or return my phone calls. I will now have to report him to the Better Business Bureau, the Attorney General consumer fraud division and file a lawsuit against him for the return my $3700.00. Based on my experience, I have to believe that all of the positive reviews on this website are posted by Mr. Carso himself or others on his behalf. Let my experience be cautionary tale. Whatever you do, do not hire Michael Carso and Advanced Flooring. He stole $3700.00 from me. Don't let that happen to you.

Raul and his team do great work. He was speedy on his response and showed me a property he was working on where I wanted a similar flooring finish. He is responsive and worked with my timeline and requests. There was an issue with the top coat on the floor, but he addressed it immediately and professionally the same day it was noticed.

i was in the process of looking for a company that would do some refinishing well done since i've had a bad expirience before i was having trouble deciding what company to trust. (The previous company gave me a cheap price but also a cheap unprofessional service that was not worth a penny) a friend of my husband had recently installed new hardwood flooring to their condo we went for a visit, and wow! Their floor looked amazing, i right away asked if they had a bussiness card, and how they heard about them, the real estate agent that closed the sale to their condo recomemded that company for flooring as they had done their bussines office, and the results talk for themselfs. After hearing that i called a.m hardwood flooring, martin gave me a free estimate and started and finished the job that same week. So i'm truly satisfied he delivered to me what i wanted which was top quality and a job well done! Totally worth it. Thank you a.m hardwood flooring Katy Standford.

Sherman did our floor last year and we LOVE them! He removed and reinstalled approximately 2,000 sq ft of solid wood flooring, in our home that is over 100 years old. Although it was a MAJOR project, the floors look like they have been here forever, but much more beautiful!

Albert completed one bathroom that included ripping out and replacing a stall shower with tile, vinyl plank flooring and installing new trim. We've already rehired him to do our other bathroom as well. He's responsive, on time, patient while we changed our minds and his prices are very fair. We will definitely being hiring him again, probably for our kitchen, and recommending him to friends and family.

From the moment I meet Vasile, I knew working with him was an absolute YES! He came to our condo, took a look at the project, provided me with great detail, and then gave me a quote on the spot! I have had several companies out for projects who never even follow up with estimates but Vasile was amazing. We hired him almost immediately and he was able to start on our flooring while we were on vacation. Since he was extremely trustworthy, I even gave him keys to our home so he could come and go as he pleased while we were gone! Before we left Vasile came in and put down some quick samples of stain for our floors, so that we could chose what color we thought would look best. He also provided his professional opinion- which I really found extremely helpful! When we were out of the country we communicated mostly with him through email, and he would respond within minutes! Vasile was amazingly responsive and always willing to do whatever to make the entire process easier for us. When we arrived home our floors looked AMAZING! They were gorgeous and beautiful and looked like brand new wood. The attention to detail that Vasile and his team took was outstanding. They ended up doing our three bedrooms the next week and once again, they showed up on time, were extremely professional, and very considerate in our home. They took extra care to cover all of our furniture and anything that would be exposed to any of the dust from the floor resanding- which there was hardly any! We also had noticed some spots that were awkward on the flooring, and they came back and fixed those too! I would HIGHLY recommend Vasile's Flooring Company to anyone who is looking for a trustworthy, professional and amazing flooring company. I cannot express my complete satisfaction with the entire team and would hire them again in an instant! Thank you, Vasile and your incredible team for transforming our home!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
