Nicole is a very warm person with a great energy who will listen to you in order to deliver the therapy you require. She's done some reiki and some shamanic healing for me, and I feel that whatever extra benefit the energy delivers, just being in a room with her, talking things over, is in itself a soothing balm.

Before I met Konrad, I struggled mightily with trying to lose weight and improve my fitness. I tried different diets, none of them worked. Tried different one size fits all exercise programs, they were too difficult, and I ended up getting hurt. After meeting Konrad, however, all of that changed. The first thing I noticed was how important it was to him that I met my goals, and that he would do whatever he could to help. Right away, I was impressed that Konrad is in graduate school at Northwestern to become a Doctor of Physical Therapy, as well as his top line health and fitness certifications, so I knew he would be the perfect person to help me out. As my trainer, Konrad developed a diet plan for me that was easy to follow and focused on eating wholesome, nutritious foods. Protein and produce, less ingredients, less processed foods. Secondly, I was impressed at the breadth of knowledge Konrad had as he led me through different workouts. His workouts were designed to target specific muscle groups, in order to strengthen my whole body and improve my functional fitness. I could tell that he actually paid attention to my fitness level, as each subsequent workout continued to challenge me, ensuring my progress. His workouts are always different and exciting, and I left each session feeling like I had accomplished something. He was also very attentive and easy to talk to, he knows so much about how the body actually works! Any question I asked him, he provided an easy to understand answer, without getting too much into the science behind it-a true indicator that he knows his craft! Between the diet and the training I did with Konrad, I managed to lose 30 pounds in 6 months and I am now pain free! I would highly recommend Konrad and his team at Chitown Trainer for any health related needs. He's a true professional, and I would imagine there aren't many other places out there that do as good a job as Chitown Trainer.

Frozen Shoulder-I have been suffering from chronic pain in my right shoulder for a long time. It is a work-related injury. I was referred to Bharat by a friend who had already worked with him for similar condition. Within a span of 4 sessions I have experienced substantial relief in pain, improvement in mobility and flexibility. He used massage, craniosacral therapy and electric stimulation to help my conditions. There is a hope that I will escape surgery. I highly recommend him for pain management.

I was doing high intensity interval training, which caused serious injuries to my knee and shoulder, so I wanted to get back into full body resistance training and cardio. After reading reviews, I chose Dan. It has been a wonderful ride ever since. He's very smart, thoughtful, and incredibly enthusiastic. He spends a great deal of time tracking your numbers so that there is genuine accountability as to the extent of your progress. After I saw the orthopedist about my shoulder and went to physical therapy, Dan took the recommended physical therapy exercises and integrated them directly into my workouts. Very creative; very cool. He's easy to communicate by text or email, and incredibly responsive. He's also very knowledgeable about the Chicago performing arts scene, which I enjoy discussing with him. Bottom line: I'm getting stronger; feeling more fit and confident; and not getting injured. Dan's been great.

I have some back and shoulder issues and was referred to Carolyn for massage therapy. She is a miracle worker. I was unable to raise my arm above shoulder height. After some deep tissue work on my upper back from her strong hands and expert knowledge of anatomy I was able to extend my arm above my head. Carolyn achieved more relief for me than three doctors had in the past year. I highly recommend getting a massage from this highly skilled professional therapist! thank you Carolyn Barbero

I would highly recommend Migdalia for massage therapy. She is very professional and knowledgeable about the human body. The deep tissue message was wonderful and helped relieve my shoulder and lower back pain. I appreciated her athletic background also, because some of my pain was from an athletic injury. So she knew exactly how to correct the problem.

As a former massage therapist for over 10 years with an extensive client list, I am very picky when it comes to my massages. I was so impressed by Dabi's deep tissue therapeutic massage I will be using her moving forward as my primary therapist. She is by far the first clinical massage therapist I have encountered who listens to the individuals concerns and the body as well. She understands that where the pain is felt is not always where the pain starts. If you want someone who truly understands the art of clinical massage therapy and therapeutic massage, hire Dabi this second.

I was skeptical about the effectiveness of acupuncture, but all my research said it would not cause any harm, and about 70% of people being treated would experience noticeable improvements in symptoms. Anatoliy Pak was recommended by my wife who had just started treatment with him. I had previously gone to a very competent orthopedic surgeon and received shots and physical therapy - but the improvements in my symptoms were only temporary. Since beginning acupuncture, I have experienced a lasting and significant (but not total) reduction of the arthritis pain in my thumb and in my knee - the pain was reduced by more than 50%. For me, Anatoliy Pak is not just a healer, he is a teacher as well. He helped me achieve pain reduction using acupuncture AND has helped me learn how to use my physical and mental energy to support the acupuncture process and increase its effectiveness. I noticed that after my first round of treatments, my blood pressure had decreased by almost 10 points - probably due to the peaceful, relaxed state I experience during the acupuncture sessions - an unexpected but very much appreciated bonus. I was so pleased with my first round of treatments I am going back for another set of sessions to see if we can reduce the pain even further. I highly recommend Anatoliy Pak to anyone who is in pain and wants to reduce or eliminate that pain.

My experience with Lymphatic Drainage and Healing Touch performed by Dr. Sylvia Hood Washington I believe had a positive effect on reducing inflammation in my body. The few days after therapy I noticed less aches and pain in my muscles & joints. I hold a lot of stress related tension in my muscles, so it was great to have some relief. During the therapy Dr. Sylvia kept me informed with what she was doing and why she was doing it. I liked how she integrated different modalities along with the lymphatic draining. She incorporated some yoga stretching and breathing as well as healing touch techniques. On top of relieving some of my inflammatory muscle and joint pain, Dr.Sylvia found an inflamed lymph node under my arm. It was likely inflamed because I was feeling on the verge of a virus. She was able to drain the lymph node and we could no longer feel an inflamed lump under my arm. I believe this procedure helped me to beat the virus that never transpired. In addition to being a Certified Lymphatic Therapist, Dr. Sylvia has vast knowledge and expertise in the medical field as an Environmental Epidemiologist and Public Health Professional. She has the ability to treat a person holistically while helping them discover how their environment may be affecting their health issues. I would highly recommend Dr. Sylvia Hood Washington as a Nautropathic Doctor for Lymphatic Wellness.

I'm a newer patient of Venus' having been introduced to sound therapy with Tibetan Bowls December 2017. I've had 6 or so treatments and have found them to be deeply meditative and restorative. I have them after an acupuncture session, which I prefer as I feel more settled and ready to meditate after clearing out emotions and energy through the acupuncture treatment. Venus has the just right technique of keeping the sound flowing and vibrating through you at the just right intensity. With each "bong" of the bowl I have different visions or pictures in my head creating a narrative unique to each session. It is a wonderful sensory experience. I had learned through psychotherapy that traumatic events can be "imprinted" on the body. I initially did the treatment weekly for four weeks to work through sad energy I had been carrying in my abdomen for some time after a pregnancy loss. The bowls are placed on various parts of your body, especially the abdomen. The treatment helped clear the lingering sadness out and I felt healed and ready to move forward again. I'm now on a maintenance and do it once a month. Venus is a kind, warm and positive spirit, who is an skilled artist with her craft. Highly recommend.

Debbie has been a driving force behind my growth and strength today. I have been a patient of Debbie's for years, and I couldn't begin to express my gratitude for her and her practice. Debbie is respectful, empathetic, and makes her patients feel comfortable in the most vulnerable times. Her approach and overall knowledge is constructive, and her support is genuine, warm, and encouraging. Throughout my years of therapy, Debbie has worked with me to address my traumas, my fears, my insecurities, and my dependencies, as well as given me insight and tools on how to manage such. I feel safe and I feel heard with Debbie, and I ultimately feel in control of myself and my life. I feel more capable with the perspective and skills she has given me, and I truly value our therapeutic relationship. With Debbie's guidance, insight, and unwavering support, I have become a healthier and stronger woman throughout the years, and I'm hopeful for my future. She is truly one of a kind!

Rita is one of the most influential people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Her style of healing is unlike anything I've ever experienced. My mind and body are in such a better state because of her work. The massage combined with working through that week's issues or triumphs is something I consistently look forward to. The environment is incredibly welcoming and calm. The sweet aroma and soft music allow my ever-running mind to relax. I highly recommend her services to anyone looking to have an overall better well-being. I couldn't imagine going anywhere else!

After knee surgery and 3 months of traditional "big store" physical therapy, I was still not able to get back to my martial arts training because of pain, flexibility, and weakness. I was recommended to Dr. Cherner at Smart Spine and Rehab, and I couldn't be happier. We found that I had hip mobility issues and core/abdominal/trunk instability issues that were contributing to my knee issues and were not allowing me to use my knee properly, thereby not allowing it to really heal post surgery. With some creative exercises, I was able to get back to my activity. I especially appreciate that they worked around my crazy work schedule, even making house calls and meeting at my gym for a couple therapy sessions. I can't recommend her enough; you won't know what you're missing until you try it!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

  • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
  • Nutritional medicine
  • Botanical medicine
  • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
  • Hygiene
  • Counseling
  • Minor surgery
  • Homeopathy
  • Acupuncture
  • Intravenous and injection therapy
  • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

  • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
    • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
  • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
    • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
    • Do I need a referral?
    • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
    • What will the co-pay be?
    • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
  • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.

Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.
