We found Joe Stephen with Standing Ovation DJ's through Thumbtack and found an absolute gem! Working with Joe was a dream from the beginning of our planning. He was wonderful and easy to work with, provided ideas and suggestions and was ready to help us put on an amazing wedding celebration. Joe provides online opportunity to select songs to play, and do not play songs and works with you to narrow down to your likes and dislikes which turned out perfect. Joe provided three separate systems for each portion of of the wedding festivities. He set up a system in the Hyatt Regency Pavillion for the ceremony for music and microphones. Then he set up music in the Cyan Room for cocktail hour, and finally he had an amazing setup in the Ballroom for the reception. His equipment was state-of-the-art and appropriately "blacked-out" not to draw attention to himself. Joe set-up ballroom up-lights that turned out beautiful and an awesome GOBO exactly as the bride and groom had designed to shine on the wall. When we walked into the room we were in awe with what he had done. It complemented the Hyatt's design and set-up for the reception. Joe has a voice that is perfect for the job. He takes charge of the night but doesn't take over, which was what we wanted. He provided a course of direction for everyone, following our planned order of events for the evening. I had put together a memory-lane video montage about the bride and groom and Joe provided an 8' screen with projector so all 180 people could view it, which also turned out great! We would recommend Joe for any event. He was a true professional and did an amazing job!

Good quality artistic wedding photos & video. One downside - not very responsive after the wedding to my questions.

Harry literally bailed me out on two separate occasions for very important video shoots I had scheduled with important interviewees. My usual film crew was double booked and Harry showed up wearing a cape to save the day.

Phil and his team filmed thirteen separate video clips for me in a one-hour session and then edited each one with different graphics and text. It was an awesome project and I am very happy with the outcomes. These little promotional pieces will help me sell my new book!

Lane's craft was my sister's Christmas present. Let me explain. My sister's social media portraits did a great disservice to her. So for her Christmas present, employing Lane's expertise, I arranged a photo shoot for my sister. And it was a hit! My sister now has great photos for her social media AND she has the "Great Photo Shoot Story" to share with all of her friends (on and off line). Thanks, Lane!

Mark was wonderful! Due to our tight schedule, we ended up having our outdoor photo shoot on the coldest day of 2017 in Chicago. With a great sense of humor, easy going personality and adventurous spirit, Mark created a gorgeous set of engagement photos for us at not one but four different locations. He made our visions a reality and has given us incredible photos that we will always cherish! Don't hesitate to hire Retiro Photography for any of your photography needs.

We are a new company that is marketing to schools. Our goal was to create a documentary style video that tells our story. Ed immediately understood what we needed and took charge. The quality of the video is outstanding. Ed has kept on schedule, was reasonably priced and was a pleasure to work with. I will continue to rely on Homesick Blues Productions for any video work we need in the future.

We booked Kevin at the last minute to film our wedding ceremony, and he did a FANTASTIC job. There were so many last minute details, that we didn't get everything taken care of, but Kevin made the video stuff very easy. His post-production skills are awesome, too. Everyone LOVES our highlight video. Even our friend who does event planning in TN for a living said it was one of the best highlight videos she had seen. Overall, this exceeded our expectations and even our hopes. Strong recommend to anyone who is considering booking him. Some details on our job: Mainly indoor filming. Large wedding party. We got a highlight video and a full ceremony video. We didn't book the video for the reception, just ceremony.

Recently, Jeff responded to my query on Thumbtack for post production help. I did some research & really liked his work better than all of the others that contacted me. Jeff helped me with a 60 second commercial that will be shown on 40' cinema screens at movie theaters promoting a local business in the Brattleboro Vt./Keene N.H. area. I asked for this ad to be similar to a movie trailer, very epic/dramatic music with lots of action & movement dynamic employed. I sent him my video clips + voice-over (not on a story line btw) which he received from me on a Saturday. On that following Monday in the early afternoon I had an incredible finished piece that was just perfect.. My client & I are extremely happy.! Jeff is a top notch professional picture & sound editor, period. He loves what he does & it shows.. Jeff is also very open to ideas & easy to communicate with. There is no downside at all here to tell anyone. It's all good from me & the cost was less than expected. By all means you may ask Jeff for my number if need be & feel free to contact me directly for a reference if desired. Thank you Jeff.! Thank you Thumbtack.! I will start on new projects next week with this same client. Jeff Wilhite will handle my post production work in the future. John G. Swanzey, N.H.

We got married this past November and hired Vidart last minute...I think a few days maybe a week at most before our wedding. We are so happy we did! I am so happy we have a video to look back on. He was able to catch everything, even the decorations which I appreciated. The 1 minute clip he made was beautiful as well. He even used our first dance song as the background which was very touching. You honestly cannot beat the price also- super reasonable. He was there on time and even stayed later for us. My only regret is not having him there the entire night.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
