As an airline pilot, sitting up to 13 hours a day, being gone from home 4 days a week, eating out and living from a suitcase...a fit, nutritious lifestyle is almost impossible. ALMOST. I am blessed, being active and playing sports has come naturally to me. But growing up I was always the "bigger" girl. Always had an excuse, blamed my plump bones for not being fit. Far from speedy, hated to run...BUT dreamed big!! I would give my heart and soul everytime. I knew I could change my bodyshape if I really tried. Thanks to great friends, they started me out weight lifting and changing my eating habits, which really helped get my fitness ball rolling... mixed martial arts has become my savior. Victory Martial Arts in Chicago has truly transformed me inside and out. I've not only lost 35 lbs and 10%of pure fat, I've learned so much about self-defense and myself. When you have a passion...nothing will get in your way. Determination become routine. I've gone from being a heavier, self-conscious lady to a muscular, confident woman thanks to the encouragement from all my instructors, classmates and family I have found at all of the Victory Martial Arts Academies!

Coach Slavica is great! I had never taken lessons or done any type of self defense instruction before. A friend of mine and student of hers referred me to her for lessons in Krav Maga. I was skeptical about whether it was for me, but seeing the passion with which she teaches and talks about Krav got me really fired up. She doesn't just teach me what to do, but she explains from a fundamental level why I'm doing it so I have a full understanding of what Im trying to accomplish with my techniques. She has also been flexible in scheduling which is a big plus because I have a crazy schedule. Highly recommend!

Our 5 year old son has been taking Jiu Jitsu at Thresold Martial Arts for 5 months and is loving it! We first heard about Threshold when we saw a demonstration they did at Park Ridge Libray last summer. Now I am now reviewing my own positive experience. My husband is a police officer and urged me to sign up for a women's self defense class being offered at Threshold. I was hesitant because I work and have two young kids, but I thought it would be a good experience and it has far surpassed my expectations. The instructor is a Jiu Jitsu black belt and the owner of the gym who really cares about teaching and keeping people safe. I could go on and on, but bottom line is this is a really family friendly place - so much more than we expected. Even with my limited free time, I am making it a priority to continue my training. Thanks!!

My daughter and I took a self defense class with Dylan at Players U. It was an awesome experience and I tell everyone about it. He was a great teacher and very professional. Patient and thorough, all Mom and girls should take this class. Boys being bullied should too! Just so they have an option to defend themselves. He teaches self confidence and Core strength thats beneficial to other sports and dance. We look forward to coming back this fall.

Filipino Martial Arts refers to ancient and newer fighting methods devised in the Philippines, the most popular of which are known as Arnis/Eskrima/Kali. The intrinsic need for self-preservation was the genesis of these systems. Throughout the ages, invaders and evolving local conflict imposed new dynamics for combat in the islands now making up the Philippines. The Filipino people developed battle skills as a direct result of an appreciation of their ever-changing circumstances. They learned often out of necessity how to prioritize, allocate and use common resources in combative situations. Filipinos have been heavily influenced by a phenomenon of cultural and linguistic mixture. Some of the specific mechanisms responsible for cultural and martial change extended from phenomena such as war, political and social systems, technology, trade and of course, simple practicality. Filipino martial arts have seen an increase in prominence due to several Hollywood movies and the teachings of modern masters such as Dan Inosanto, Cacoy Canete worlds famous Masters in Arnis fighting in Cebu City.

Before we sent our daughter off to college, we wanted to be sure she had some basic self defense training. Michael came to our house and trained her specifically for the self defense skills a young woman might need. It was a very effective training and we were very pleased. It is extremely rare to find a Black Belt who is willing to work with others for personalized one on one training as I do. I have the luxury of working with so many other Black Belt instructors that I may spend more time one on one with students rather than only being able to see people in a class setting alone. I believe class settings are wonderful at helping you learn much material. However I realize that personal training sessions are the best way for others to learn self defense, or work out more effectively given many different factors in our lives.

About

Krav Panim El Panim or KAPAP is the Hebrew acronym for face-to-face combat. It is the original combat system of CQB, hand-to-hand combat and self-defense, employed by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). KAPAP (Krav Maga) fight tactics originated in the 1940s and were used by the Palmach (Jewish Strike Brigades) forces in fighting for the independence of the state of Israel. These Palmach units later formed the core of Israel's special units in the conventional military (IDF). The KAPAP Academy is staffed by former official Israeli military and police instructors in counter-terror combatives (LOTAR). In oppose to typical martial arts schools, it is an "all combat" system -- a system totally dedicated to close combat and self-defense, with and without weapons. It has no sporting or competition aspect, nor does it adhere to any classical or traditional school of thought. KAPAP Combative Concepts is the first and the only training center in Illinois to be certified by the KAPAP Academy. We offer authentic Israeli combative CQB, H2H combat, tactical training, and more. In addition to our KAPAP and Krav Maga training, we offer Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) classes, kids programs (Tae Kwon Do), women self-defense classes, and uniquely designed combat fitness classes. We offer 2 free trial classes, so stop by to get your guest pass today!
