We were in dire straights. My husband and I attempted to refinish 1,000 sq foot of flooring ourselves. Needless to say we failed and thought we had ruined our floors permanently. I found Trust Flooring on the Thumbtack website at 4:00 am on Thanksgiving morning. Andrean met us at the house at 8:00, quoted the job and had his guys at our house the following day at 7:30. It took them 2 days to do an exceptional job!!!! They were honest, trustworthy, highly competent and very reasonable. We give Trst Flooring our highest recommendation. And once again the price was exceptional. Can't say enough about this company and the people that work for Trust Flooring!! You can't go wrong with hiring them.

We bought a house and wanted to refinish our hardwood floors. We had multiple contractors come out and bid. When Peter came to look at our floors and give us an estimate he took one look and within 5 seconds said "you have damage right there", and pointed to a spot where indeed, there was damage. He was the only one to notice it. Peter and his crew were timely, courteous and professional. They began first thing in the morning and stayed long after 5 for the days it took to do the project. And the project? Gorgeous, stunning, amazing. We love the result. We highly recommend Peter and Studio Floors for your flooring needs.

I am very pleased with my new kitchen floor, installed by Idc Flooring. After getting estimates from three other companies, it was a huge relief to meet Peter. He was low key, very knowledgeable and helpful. He helped us find the right product - luxury vinyl - at the right price. The installation team arrived the next week and did an excellent job! They were very professional and know their craft well. I highly recommend Idc Flooring and will certainly contact them again in the future. In my book, they get an A+!

Special Floor was amazing - I cannot say enough good things about him and his company. He consistently went above and beyond, more so than any other contractor I've ever worked with. We had to move our floor refinishing dates up at the last minute due to other work that was being done in the common areas of our building, Radu and his team worked extra long hours in order to complete our job in time. There was no way anyone else would have been able to accommodate this job on the timing we needed it. The floor refinishing was also top-notch quality and we were thrilled with the results. You can tell Radu really cares about the work and kept us updated throughout with pictures and messages. He even fixed molding that we were missing and parts of the flooring that were not originally installed correctly to make sure we had a perfect end product. On top of this, he charges very reasonable and affordable rates for his work. I wouldn't go anywhere else to have my floors refinished next time and would 100% recommend him to anyone else I know!

I had a bedroom floor redone in vinyl plank flooring. I was very happy with the quality of the work done. The 2 man crew was on time, responsive to any questions and requests I had, and they finished in a timely manner and cleaned up. The price was very reasonable as well. I would hire thus service again for future flooring needs.

Michael Carso, the owner of Advanced Flooring is a thief. Beware! He asks for the money for the materials up front. Foolishly, I paid him $3700.00 cash up front in order to get a discount. Big mistake!!! He took the money and now 9 weeks later, the job has not even started and he will not respond to texts or return my phone calls. I will now have to report him to the Better Business Bureau, the Attorney General consumer fraud division and file a lawsuit against him for the return my $3700.00. Based on my experience, I have to believe that all of the positive reviews on this website are posted by Mr. Carso himself or others on his behalf. Let my experience be cautionary tale. Whatever you do, do not hire Michael Carso and Advanced Flooring. He stole $3700.00 from me. Don't let that happen to you.

Jeff did an awesome job on carpeting the bedroom in a fifth wheel camper. There were a lot of cuts to be made. His attention to detail was something you don't see often these days. I highly recommend Jeff for any type of work that you would need. You will not only receive great workmanship but you'll have a new friend.

My floors were a total mess due to a burst pipe. I got an estimate from another floor company with a price that was out of this world crazy. Their estimate included removing the damaged floors in the kitchen where a bulk of the damage was and removing flooring all the way to the front of the home where there was no damage. Neal came in and explained to me that such extensive work wasn't necessary and gave a much more reasonable quote. His work is absolutely beautiful. I was told that the floors couldn't be matched, Neal matched them. I am completely pleased with Neal, his companions and the completed project.

Albert completed one bathroom that included ripping out and replacing a stall shower with tile, vinyl plank flooring and installing new trim. We've already rehired him to do our other bathroom as well. He's responsive, on time, patient while we changed our minds and his prices are very fair. We will definitely being hiring him again, probably for our kitchen, and recommending him to friends and family.

The entire experience from coming to measure the space, bringing samples of the flooring to the install was great! We had a couple of rooms that had carpet in them that we wanted wripped out and have hardwood laminate installed to match the rest of the condo. The guys went above and beyond to make sure that all of the transitions and capping of the upstairs area were done perfectly. Definitely recommend!

We had to break our project into 2 phases because of remodeling. They refinished floors in 2 bedrooms, stairs and a hallway. They were here when they said they would be, did quality work and explained very clearly any questions I had. We will be using them for phase 2. One small nit: Some of the stain got onto our walls and baseboards so I had to repaint those. It wasn't a huge deal, but I feel like they could have taped that off so I didn't need to repaint.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
