I hired J and B Contractors to lay a new floor in my family room. The attention to detail and professionalism was amazing. They showed up on time, did an excellent job and finished on time. I was so impressed that I contracted with them for a second job to repair and repaint my deck. That job went equally well. So now, later this week, they will do a third job for me fixing my garage trim. I highly recommend this company. I can't imagine using any other company for contracting work.

We have just had Ben and his team complete a bathroom remodel for us. In 26 years of hiring contractors to do various jobs for us, this is by far the best experience that we have ever had. We got the estimate in a timely manner, were fit into the schedule, and recontacted a few days before the start of the job. The job took a little longer than anticipated in large part due to our old house and a less than perfect job on the original bathroom install. Ben and his team took it all in stride and we were rewarded by a fantastic finished product. Ben was friendly, helpful, organized, knowledgeable, and extremely hard-working. His assistants, Brandon and tom were equally industrious and friendly. Overall, we were delighted with our interactions with Ben and we will be calling Fryer's for future projects. Thanks, Ben!

Joe is the consummate professional. We could not have found a more able contractor to take care of our "eyesore". Joe has transformed our home into the "jewel" of the neighborhood. Beautiful new fence, gorgeous deck (that he custom built in an octagon shape), and extensive repairs to a damaged fireplace and cedar siding. Now he is putting the "icing on the cake" by painting and trimming. I cannot say enough good things about Joe Greico. Joe will be helping us plan a new kitchen for the future and we look forward to working with him again. Thank you Joe from the bottom of our hearts. John & Sheila Johnson

Bill painted a large room with 15 ft ceilings. He was professional, quick and very clean. He took any worry I had with timing and quality or touch ups and put me at ease immediately. He is easy to get in touch with, He also is very reasonable when compared against other contractors. Trustworthy, I could trust him at the job site and my worry level was low. When I have anymore jobs, I will call Griffin Remodel first.

I hired Tony to do a significant repair on my house I had already had two contractors come out and bid the job previous to Tony's arrival so i had an idea of what I was going to be paying for the job Tony and his wife ce on a Sunday to give us the quote on thee job which caught me off guard cause most contractors won't do anything on the weekends but as soon as I met Tony and his wife I liked them both very down to earth people just trying to make a living they were both very professional and Tony was very detail oriented I explained to him that we had previous bids and explained to him what I was thinking it would take to do the job and he listened to everything I had to say and took it all in and then in detail explained his plans on how he intended to do the job my wife and I both felt very comfortable hiring Tony for the job and we are very pleased that we did he ran into some issues while doing the job that were unexpected without hesitation he went and got the material and repaired the spot he seen the issues as I said before he is detail oriented and refuses to leave the customer with any worries or concerns We can't wait to work with Tony on future projects and I will be recommending him for anyone I know that has home repair or home improvement projects. Again thankyou Tony for doing things in such a timely and quality fashion can't wait to work with you again.

We live in a 1920s home. With all great old houses updates have to be done from time to time. I knew of Go Junk Champaign and decided to see if they could help me out. I made one call and was greeted with professionalizm and understanding of the needs of this old house. I was wanting to take my floor down to the hard wood and quickly had a quote that was more than fair. Within a couple of days Matt Coartney and his crew showed up and began the demolition. These guys were professional, quick and very friendly. When they got into my floor we quickly realized the hardwood didn't go all the way thru like I had anticipated. Matt talked to me and explained my options, I decided to have them make it so we could lay a new floor down and that's exactly what they did! No complaints from any of the guys and it was a chore to say the least. When they got done with the floor him and his crew cleaned up the dirt and grime from my kitchen redo and were pleasant thru all of that too. Any and all demolition work I will need with this old house I will be calling in Go Junk again. Matt and the crew did an outstanding job in a quick and methodical manner. Go Junk is more than reasonable, great work ethic and gets the job done in an extremely timely fashion. I would t hesitate if I were you to call them and work with his great company and crew. Thanks again Go Junk for a jn well done!!

My husband and I lived in an historic 1910 Arts and Crafts home. For several years we hired Mark for restoration jobs and repair. He did exceptionally great work. When it was time to build our timber frame home, we chose Mark from 9 different contractors that we interviewed. He did not disappoint us in our choice. Mark was great to work with and did an incredible job. The craftsmanship was outstanding, and Mark was easy to work with. He helped us through the process with ease and we both throughly enjoyed the experience. Mark continues to be involved in any maintenance issues we have and is always there for us. We would highly recommend Harner Interiors for your construction needs.

Brian Caldwell took over large renovations needed for my house in Decatur. There was a lot of work needed in a short amount of time. He did an amazing job. He took care of every aspect of the project that included siding, roof work, garage demolition, foundation work and much more. He also did a good job of "thinking-out-of-the-box" on ways to save me money. He also worked well with city inspectors, permits, my property manager, and my other workers. And he was very flexible and easy to work with regarding payments. All-in-all just a great job. Was nice knowing I had someone I could count on in a difficult renovation project within a short timeline.

Take out old decking and replace and expand deck. Add stairs to one end where there was none before. Contractor Chris Good did excellent work, and on time.

Creative Building Solutions distinguished itself among local contractors in how responsive they are. Clinton managed a number of projects that I needed to have done well and quickly to sell my house. He assessed the work and turned around quotes quickly. The conventional wisdom may be that the homeowner chases the contractor to move things along, but it was Clinton making sure I stayed on top of things on my end so the project could move ahead on time. When they ran into unexpected obstacles on a couple of the projects, they quickly altered course and still completed the work on time and on budget. Oh, and the pricing was more than fair.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

        What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

        • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
        • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
        • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
        • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
