Ms. Sandy has been doing an awesome job at tutoring my 6 year-old son. Before he met her, my son was struggling with reading a book.(because we only speaks Korean at home) Now his reading skills are much improved and he is able to read! His grade get higher since Ms. Sandy starts to teach him. She is warm, patient and very sweet. We really want to have her to teach him more. We also recommended her to my Korean colleague, who has a 5 year-old daughter. - NamSuk Oh & KyongHwa Jung (in Chicago)

Upon finding out that I needed to submit a "design completed" page for my daughters cotillion book and that I had missed the deadline...SHEER PANIC settled in for me. I pleaded for an extension as I was traveling. They gave me 24 hours! After calling around while in St.Louis, I remembered THUMBTACK! Shannon responded and requested more information about what I needed. I contacted her rambling and frantic, desperately seeking understanding of my issue. Shannon comforted me with her confidence to complete the job in just a few hours. I was able to send her a few photos, describe what I wanted and she created a masterpiece! Shannon is clearly a professional who not only handles escalated requests, she manages with precision, confidence and comfort to the customer. This is the type of service that deserves constant public recognition and the highest accolades possible. I am elated with her work, and regard her highly as others should too. Shannon SAVES LIVES!!!:)

Going with Brian and WebRev was the best decision we could have made for our practice. We were starting a new dental practice in Los Angeles, which is a highly competitive market to break into. We wanted a site that would stand out, and they nailed it. They also got us going on social media in a big way – what they did for us resulted in an over 500% increase in activity on our social pages. Probably the thing that impressed me was how much they increased our visibility in web searches and the map section of Google. Our site comes up in the first results of people’s searches for dentists in Los Angeles, and the importance of that can’t be overstated. Being found at the top of Google is literally the reason our practice is a success today. I would (and have) recommended WebRev highly.

Maria was hired to reconfigure some of the art, book shelves and knick knacks that I had accumulated throughout my house. I also needed some updating, with pillows, décor and furniture. When she was done she had redone my two main living areas and kitchen with things I already had plus went out and purchased just the right additions to pull everything together. It was like a new house! I especially liked how she made sloppy book shelves and living room tables look like they should be in a magazine. And she was very smart, thrifty and practical in what she purchased for me - and right in keeping with my taste. She gave me great advice and planning tips for more expensive furniture and large pieces I should eventually add into my décor, which I have done over the years. I love my house and Maria was instrumental in getting the best expression of my lake house style

Jessie helped me edit and better the flow of the book that I had wrote. When I chose her it was initially because of her educational background and the energy she brought to my work but once we started to dive into the writing I was even more impressed! She lives for this, she did such an amazing job and I will be utilizing her serives for any future work as well as referring my friends and family to her. Some of the things I did not not know upon choosing her to edit my work is that she uses Google Docs to help create a collaborative environment that is also convenient, easy to navigate through and allows for the opportunity to compare the edits she has made to what was previously written. The best way to describe her work is that she took what I was trying to explain to the reader/audience and ACTUALLY made it into what I was trying to explain. Thank you Jessie!

I've worked with Jackie since I began my educational consulting practice in 2008. She designed my website, logo, and all my marketing materials to be visually cohesive and has also done an updating for me as well. My business brand identity is clean, concise and consistent. Colleagues and clients frequently complement me on my sophisticated business card! I really appreciated Jackie's excellent service. She's always responsive, timely and flexible. I'm confident Jackie can manage any project from website design to books and everything in between. I would highly recommend Jackie.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

          • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
          • Strong writing skills.
          • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
          • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
          • Expertise in your target area.
          • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

          • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
          • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
          • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
          • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
