My son Dan was failing math. We called Arbor because of a recommendation and they set us up with Ari (an excellent math tutor). Dan went up to a B. Then the next semester Dan went to an A. Arbor Tutors literally took my son from an F to an A.

I have been taking Spanish lessons with Cristobal for coming up on a year and French lessons for the past 6 months or so. While I am sure that there are plenty of choices for tutoring this may be the only teacher I have had that I can honestly say has far superior methodology versus all my other professors. I don't say this lightly either, I say this coming from years of experience with other teachers in various settings. Just to give a little background, I studied Spanish for 3 years in high school, then studied in Mexico at a vocational school in a completely immersed environment (living with a host family of non-English speakers) far from the reaches of most gringos in a small city called Cuernavaca. I have worked with native Spanish speakers that speak very little English for 10+ years, studied Spanish in college for 4 semesters, and even studied with Professor William Slavin for two years in weekly private sessions, a local scholar who spoke English, Spanish, French, ,Italian, Portuguese, and Hebrew. While Slavin's approach was very thorough, Cristobal's approach is practical, more natural, and aimed at speaking. Ole! Spanish School isn't just another business in the sea, it's a place with an authentic philosophy and a natural approach to language learning. To make the experience even better, his rates are super reasonable and he has a very easy going personality that creates a relaxed environment. His positive ratings exist for a reason.

Kevin is the most outstanding tutor I have ever met or even ever spoken with. He is a retired physician who had great teachers during his career and now works with students to try and have a positive influence on their lives. My son did both high school Math and Science tutoring with him AND also did ACT test preparation with him. My son's ACT scores went from 24 before working with Kevin to 33 after working with him for just 3 months! I cannot speak more highly of him. If you want your son or daughter to really excel - you better at least meet with this guy! Darren G. Northbrook, IL

Souradip Ghosh is an excellent tutor. He teaches the things that need to be learned. His methodical approach make lessons very productive and helpful. Furthermore, he tailors his sessions to the needs of his pupil, building of his or her strengths, and tackling their weaknesses. Working with Souradip has been a pleasure, and the time that I've put in with him has been very beneficial.

Andy's commitment to helping his clients is unparalleled. Andy distinguishes himself through his preparation prior to each meeting in order to maximize the productivity of the meeting. Moreover, most tutors focus on content, but in addition to content, Andy teaches you how to go about studying and practicing in a manner that yields consistent results across topics. I have worked with Andy for high school math, college math and GMAT preparation and he delivered every step of the way.

Danny is helping my 3rd grade son with reading and writing. He is not the first tutor I tried, but is the absolute best. He was able to diagnose what my son was struggling with in a matter of 1 session and determine what he needed, which speaks to his experience. He is really able to connect with my son and show him that teachers are not just about filling out worksheets but truly can work with the child and connect. For the first time ever with a tutor, my son truely looks forward to seeing Danny.

John is like a family member to our family and has been tutoring my girls for about 6 years or so on subject courses as well as ACT prep sessions.. He started tutoring my oldest when she was in high school. Thanks to John's expertise teaching skills with his ACT prep tutoring sessions, my daughter's ACT test score jumped to 8 points from her pre-test score. My youngest daughter is now taking ACT prep sessions with John and gains more and more confidence after each session with John.. John possesses a positive and enthusiastic personality. He has a great rapport with my daughters and is articulate. John is always prepared for every tutoring session and is ready to teach with a smile. John is confident, knowledgeable and reliable. John has successfully demonstrated his awareness of different learning styles and has adequately adjusted assignments to meet my daughters' varied needs. Net, I highly recommend John without reservation!

CDA tutors have made a powerful impact in the lives of our students! Our main goal for tutors is to make Math and Science simple, so our students can have a great foundation for their current and future coursework. Since our tutors have a minimum of a B.S. in a related math or science field, we have the edge to give our students a greater depth of understanding in this coursework. Along with their educational expertise and prior experience in teaching, they are able to connect with each student in a very clear, concise manner.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
    • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
