Our daughter (Kivi) started with the recorder in 4th grade, and soon graduated to clarinet. By Middle School, she was taking lessons from a classical teacher who advanced her skills markedly. Upon reaching high school, she was in demand by the jazz band - whose leader persuaded her to take up the saxophone. Kivi loved the sax, and loved jazz, but clarinet remained her first instrument. I thought of the great jazz clarinet players: Pete Fountain at the top of a substantial list. But we could find no one who could teach jazz clarinet. Finally, we attended an event at VanderCook, and one of the presenters gave us Jon's name. Kivi studied with Jon for about two years. I was disappointed with the amount of time Kivi had to spend practicing Jon's lessons - what high schooler has time for anything? Nevertheless, Kivi learned a great deal from Jon, and was the only student to ever perform a clarinet solo in our high school's jazz band history ("Jack the Bear"). Jon was unique in my experience in that he taught what Kivi wanted to learn - rather than imposing a rigid course of instruction. If you are considering private lessons that offer something both valuable and unique, please look no further than Jon Novi.
Bob has been working with my daughters for 5 years. He goes above and beyond by playing a few band sets after their individual lessons. My daughters not only learn, but they have so much fun and they sound awesome!
Laura understood exactly what kind of vibe we wanted for our Sunday morning brunch wedding. The entire band was super friendly and stayed to play for us even as we were cleaning up the event space. They took the time to learn two songs for us and nailed them while also putting their own style into it. Highly recommend, so much better than any DJ.
I cannot express how AMAZING Kathryn and her band were at our wedding! It was the first thing our guests commented to me on: "Where did you find her?!" "She has an amazing voice!" Kathryn has a long repertoire list that is packed with songs of many genres. She also worked with us to incorporate any songs we wanted which weren't on the original list. She and her guitarist provided beautiful background music during our lunch and cocktails, and more danceable selections later on. Their music was such an important part of our event and I would hire her again in a second!
Nick and his mate, Sam showed up on time....ready to work and continued to play three sets during a three hour period. This is my first time hiring a band for my personal party and I could not have worked with a better pair. I will definitely use him again. Well worth the money. Nice guys and open to my inexperienced suggestions. Lol! And I haven't even mention the quality of their music (jazz) was outstanding. They were the hit and highlight of the party.
I've taken lesson from Matt for 8 years. He helped me learn first the acoustic guitar, then the bass, electric guitar, and the drums! He's very knowledgeable on all instruments and helped me understand rhythm, theory, and scales by looking some popular songs as well as songs that I liked to learn. I found him to be a reliable source when I was learning performance guitar and music theory at College of DuPage. I am now studying music business at Columbia College Chicago and Matt is still an essential source who is helping me in all of my endeavors. I hope this review proves helpful, Matt has assisted me endlessly with my musical pursuits and I'm confident he'll do the same for you!
Kathy sang at my California wedding in August 2014, during the ceremony and the reception. I discussed the songs I was considering with Kathy many times in the months leading up to our wedding and she listened to my ideas, giving guidance and suggestions for impactful songs. We ended up choosing an Adele song for the ceremony and a Beatles song for the reception. One of our guests told me after that he's only cried at two weddings: his and when Kathy sand Adele at ours. If I could give Kathy six stars, I would. Kathy is the epitome of professional. In a process filled with weirdly secretive costs (the minute you say wedding, costs increase exponentially) it was a huge relief to have someone up front, honest and fair with prices and expectations. If you are worried about having a meaningful music experience, hire Kathy. She listened to our desire for an emotional performance at the ceremony and a more 'fun song' at the reception and knocked it out of the park with "I'm So Tired" by the Beatles. I could go on about all the ways Kathy enhanced our wedding experience, but let me leave it at this: if you are even remotely considering live music at your wedding, you would be crazy not to contact Kathy.
La Fuerza Versatil is a perfect example of what a well committed and disciplined band is all about. They also play all kinds of music, from Banda, rancheras to cumbias and zapateados. Their performances are always great. The crowd really enjoys their music.
I am so pleased with Sid and Hala. We had them play for my mom's 80th birthday party last weekend. Beginning with my first correspondence with them up until they left the party, they were wonderful. I have never used Thumbtack before or even heard of Thumbtack so I didn't know what to expect. I put in the information to Thumbtack a few months ago looking for a live band for my mom's birthday party. I had no idea what a live band would cost and if there was anything available where I was looking to have the party. (The party was a good hour from any major city). So once I entered the information into the Thumbtack website, within maybe an hour or so Sid and Hala contacted me. They introduced themselves, informed me about the type of band they were (acoustic), type of music they played and told me costs in the first correspondence (quite reasonable I thought). We went back and forth several times with questions of mine and their answers and they always answered within an hour. Can you believe they were willing to drive 2 hours to my event! I couldn't believe it. No extra charge for drive time either! So we had a verbal/email commitment with them and the next week they emailed a contract that I signed and sent back to them. We emailed back and forth a couple of times over the following few months up until the event. The emails were mainly regarding song selection. They have a good sized list of songs they play on their website. I had two song requests that they didn't currently play but they were more than willing to learn for me. The day of the party they were right on time-1 pm sharp. They were professional and polite. They gave themselves an hour to set up and started right at 2 pm like we planned. They checked in with me prior to starting to ask about when they should play the songs they learned special for me. They asked if it was okay if they took a break in the middle. (Of course it was okay!) The quality of performance was 5 star and then some. Their voices are beautiful and work really well together. I had listened to several of their songs on you-tube prior and the internet quality of the music was not the greatest for some of the songs. Let me tell you that in person they are fabulous!! So much sound and talent from two people. My family threw in some song requests that they were not expecting and they accommodated beautifully. They could play the music and just looked up the words on their smart phones so they didn't make any mistakes. That was the only time they had to read lyrics. If you had not been looking at them you would have never known they were reading the music. I received compliment after compliment from our guests on how great the music was. I cannot recommend this acoustic band enough. You will not be disappointed. Well worth the money.
Do not have enough words to express how great the Band Sundance was for our wedding. Their ease of communication beforehand put both of us at ease that we would not have to worry about this vendor. The bands choice of songs kept everyone of all age groups on the dance floor. We received numerous compliments of the band. Whether it was when they were playing, or when they catered to other music the crowd liked when they were on break. Their professionalism, talent, and love of getting people out on the dance floor is second to none. I wish we could have had more time with the Band Sundance, and would recommend them to anyone looking to have a live band. Whether it was 70s-90s music or country music, the Band Sundace put on an amazing show. Also the fact they took candid photos while playing was something that went above and beyond what you woould expect of a band. Again, there are not enough words to express how great they were at our wedding.
My family has hired Sipos & Young for a wedding reception and a celebration of life gathering. Rachel and Chris are fantastic musicians and their song catalogue is deep. They also asked on both occasions if there were any particular songs the family wanted to hear. They set the tone perfectly for each event as diverse as they were and really added something special.
Artist collective is a very professional business that has the musician in their best interest. I personally have worked with them and it was so nice to have them take care of the "business" end, so I could concentrate on the creative end with my band. AC set us up with a photo/video shoot and it was a success! Highly recommended by us!!
Fantastic music, fun band members, great night!
My son learned to play guitar there at the age of 5. He is now 12 and has continued his lessons and has formed a Rock Band where they all practice and perform through the music school. They have all learned a tremendous amount and it continues to be a wonderful experience for them.
The B-Side Band performed at our fundraising in November. They were outstanding!. I would highly recommend them for your next event. From securing our date to discussing the details of the evening, the members of the band were extremely helpful in guiding us. Our guests enjoyed their playlist and couldn't get off the dance floor.
These guys art great! Really good original songs and their covers are spot on! Fantastic live band. Will definitely see them again.
