Scottie started teaching my 9 year-old piano, which led to my 5 year-old daughter wanting to learn too. This transitioned into my husband now learning guitar with him by starting lessons. We now have 3 family members taking music lessons with Scottie. We think he is terrific because he makes it fun and encourages them to play songs they like. Our son is learning a blues song already and loves it. My husband was jamming and playing with Scottie on just his 2nd lesson. This is incredible and the right approach for our family since it's not just theory, but rather practical, real hands on learning. We have been very happy thus far with Scottie and are glad we found him through Thumbtack!
Bob does a great job choosing music that the kids are interested in learning in both Piano and Guitar. They learn fun songs along with the necessary scales which keeps them better focused.
Shaun was a fantastic beginner guitar instructor. I had never even picked up a guitar until our first lesson and I was reading music and playing songs by my second lesson. He was extremely patient, articulate and talented. He also came to my apartment which was very convenient. I would highly recommend him for anyone interested in learning how to play the guitar.
Guitar Chicago is the best option for music lessons in Chicago! Their instructors are patient, knowledgeable, and supportive. They do a fantastic job of working with you to achieve your individual goals. I started as a beginner with no guitar knowlege, and they helped me achieve my goals of playing multiple open mics and music events. I've also been able to meet and work with other Guitar Chicago students! They are always willing to work with my busy schedule, which is very hard to find with other schools or group lessons.
More than just a teacher. I took guitar lessons with Paul for eight years. He helped me realize my natural ear for music, and allowed me to figure out what I wanted to learn. Our lessons were always different. Sometimes I would bring in songs that I wanted to learn, and sometimes he would have things he thought I should know how to play, which helped me learn similar songs later on. When I was applying to college and needed to learn how to read music and play jazz guitar, he tailored all of our lessons so that I could learn those techniques quickly and most importantly, efficiently. Paul's personality transcends the teacher-student relationship, which allowed he and I to become very good friends. Paul William is an excellent teacher for whatever you need to learn. You can't go wrong taking lessons from him.
Pete taught our son James guitar lessons for about two years. James had never played guitar prior to meeting with Pete, and I was impressed by Pete's patience, optimism and professionalism at every lesson. James can now play several pop songs and even some beginner classical music. Thanks Pete!
Bob is a natural as a teacher who makes learning the guitar and bass a fun, challenging and exciting experience. I've been taking lessons with him for nearly 3 years now and have made a huge amount of progress in my playing and my knowledge of music theory. He's quite simply the best music teacher I've ever had (and I've had quite a few!) and I can't recommend him highly enough. He's a thoroughly lovely guy who also happens to be a master guitar player and musician.
I don't leave reviews very often, but I feel compelled to do so in this case. So here we go... In the past, I've taken guitar lessons from 8 or 9 different guitar teachers in this area throughout the years - some were ok, others were less than ok. I know the difference between a good teacher and an average one. So this time around I invested the time to do my homework because I didn't want to find another "pretty good" teacher. I wanted to find THE BEST guitar teacher. From the first moment I met Jacob at the American Academy of Guitar, it felt different... it just felt better. But first impressions don't tell the whole story, so I remained cautiously optimistic about how good these lessons with Jacob were really going to be... Well, the deeper we went, the better it got! This is exactly what I'd been looking for but never found until now! These lessons are a lot more fun and I'm learning more now than I ever have before! What makes Jacob better than all the other teachers I've ever had elsewhere? Here's the short list of observations I made: 1. It's very clear that his entire approach to teaching me is to help me reach my goals with the guitar. 2. The lessons are more fun than what I've had elsewhere. I've been thinking a lot about this and trying to put my finger on exactly what about Jacob makes the lessons more fun. It's his personality combined with his unique ability to instantly uncover bad habits I didn't even know I had in my playing... then he was able to help me fix them almost immediately and that led to... 3. I'm making big improvements in a very short period of time... not just because what he teaches me really works better than what I learned elsewhere in the past, but because he was able to help me quickly remove obstacles that had been holding my development back! That's all for now. I just want to say THANK YOU Jacob. I plan on continuing to learn from you for many years to come!!
Very patient and well educated in music theory. Knows both the material on paper and effectively taught it to me on the instrument. Congenial, knowledgeable, and surprisingly cheap. Would absolutely recommend to beginners and onward, particularly for jazz and blues. If you're still not convinced, he also has a big, brown, friendly hound dog to sit in on lessons with you.
I took guitar lessons from Fran. He is a very soulful and talented person. As a teacher, he is knowledgeable and helped me accelerate in my journey to learn guitar. You can't go wrong with Fran. He is one of the best!
Andrew was my guitar teacher for a while. He could come out to my house and we'd spend around an hour for each lesson. He did a great job at showing me the importance of the basics of guitar. Using the tips and tricks he gave me, I've improved a lot as a player and really feel like I have a solid grasp on it now. He was always on time and very flexible with scheduling. If I ever had to cancel a lesson, it was never an issue and he would make sure to find a time that we could reschedule.
I really enjoyed taking guitar lessons with Ryan! He took time to really listen to and understand what my goals were and helped me work towards them, which is no small feat for a complete beginner. He explained new concepts in ways I could understand and I felt comfortable asking for clarification. He also gave me a variety of different exercises (chords, scales, picking, strumming, full songs) to keep things interesting and to keep me engaged. I also liked that he added in a little music theory (at my request) so that I knew why I was doing what I was doing. In all Ryan is kind, chill, accommodating, talented, and thoughtful, so I would definitely recommend him as a teacher.
Bob is an amazing guitarist and an oustanding teacher. He is very patient and is extremly good in breaking things down, to make it easier for a beginner. His lessons are very clear and structured. He pays extra care in correcting the techniques and keeping it correct and simple. Learning Guitar from Bob is fun!!
If you are a beginner or Joe Satriani, Mike Vanier can teach you something. Patient style with beginners young and old, and amazing with advanced students looking to improve "ANY" style. Rock/classic/jazz/blues. This guy has the chops. Also, very well educated in music theory. I recommend taking some lessons from Mike before somebody takes him on a world tour. "NO JOKE"
I was a beginner guitar player and knew only a few basic chords, and I wanted to learn so much more. I decided to get private lessons from Adam and it had been one of the best decisions I have ever made. Under his teaching, I learned so much about musical theory. He really took the time to make sure I understood everything. He's very friendly, through, patient, and you can tell that he really loves what he does. When I played the songs I loved on the guitar, it made me feel so much more appreciative of the music. Through his teaching I gained a new outlook and appreciation for guitar. There are some things that can be self taught, but getting private lessons from Adam made a world's difference for my knowledge and ability to play the guitar.
Tim was very good at explaining my lessons. He was patient and listened to my concerns and my lack of comfort in learning something new. He is extremely knowledgable and has helped me at achieving my dream of playing the guitar. I highly recommend anyone who wants lessons as a beginner or if you want advance lessons to hire Tim. You won't be sorry.
I took guitar lessons with Jon for about a year as a beginner. At my first lesson Jon asked me about what kind of music I liked and what I was hoping to gain from taking lessons. From that point on, classes were tailored to fit my interests which kept me excited to learn as much as possible. Jon's passion for music as well as his students is very obvious- I definitely recommend him!
I took guitar lessons from Jim and would highly recommend him as a teacher. Jim is a skilled musician who can assess the needs of a student and tailor his teaching to fit those needs. Jim's patience provided me with the relaxed atmosphere that I needed to understand new material and feel relaxed playing it. Jim's focus is to make learning music fun. For me if it isn't enjoyable then why do it? Whether it's basic chords or a Neil Young rocker the focus is to enjoy the experience. If you are a beginner or accomplished musician Jim can help you attain your musical goals. Peter Chicago,IL
Great lesson. Mark brings with him a good "feel" for music and had a great way of explaining things so I could understand them without having to have the knowledge in theory.

I work as a student and inbound marketer, but I have been playing guitar since I was 13 and am now 21. I can teach scales, chords, and basic theory, and I can teach beginners how to learn awesome songs. I love music and am very educated in every genre besides country. I went through the School of Rock my whole life and toured with their All Star group throughout the Midwest. I have also played in a band, and both of these experiences have given me a great understanding on live performance and stage presence.
