Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: We are a boutique provider of 1-1 tutoring across most subjects for middle school, high school, college, and graduate students. We also provide customized, 1-1 standardized test prep tutoring for the PSAT, HSPT, ACT, SAT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT and more. We work with our students to develop customized study plans that cover key concepts, test-taking strategies, and mindset/confidence building. We focus on core skill development, meaning our objective is to help students understand fundamental concepts, not tips and tricks. Our independently contracted tutors each have >2 years of tutoring or teaching experience (many have far more) and impressive academic backgrounds (typically graduate degrees from highly selective universities and 95th percentile standardized test scores or better). We have a small but highly qualified team and one of our founders or Managing Tutors personally interviews each applicant. We believe that tutoring requires a different skill set than classroom teaching, and we know that simply understanding a given subject well doesn’t create a great tutor. We stress the importance of mindset, strategy, confidence, effective study habits, and time management and organization skills in achieving superior performance in school and on standardized tests.

I just want to take a minute and tell you how much I appreciate Andrew from MyGuru helping me to prepare for my entrance exam for Chamberlain College of Nursing. Before I met with Andrew, I took a few practice tests from a study guide to prepare for the nursing test provided by HESI (Health Information Systems, Inc.), and I was truly failing on all of the practice tests - literally getting less than half right on each exam, which covered Biology, Chemistry, and Anatomy and Physiology. After only having less than 2 weeks to prepare for the exam (I just took it this past Wednesday), I did incredibly well, having an overall composite score of 85%!! Unbelievable! I'm so happy! The test was incredibly hard, and I know without a doubt that I wouldn't have done so well without his support. I am more confidant that I will be accepted into Chamberlain.

I just took the GMAT this morning and received a fabulous score! A big thank you goes out to Jim for helping me overcome specific weaknesses. I really appreciate your patience and guidance during our tutoring sessions. You also helped improve my mental math skills and taught me how to think outside of the box on complex questions. Thank you! The GMAT books that John recommended were also a huge help. I think every student trying to score about a 700 should purchase these books. The GMAT Club questions were also good, but I found they were almost too hard. The actual test was not nearly as difficult as the GMAT Club quant questions were. I also found that number properties were a bigger portion of the test than I originally anticipated. I would suggest students focus on this and not only concentrate on the super tricky word problems.

I decided to go back to school to obtain my bachelor’s degree for accounting. Since I know myself all too well, I decided to attend University of Phoenix online. Although I enjoy going to school online, in an accelerated program, with limited ways to ask questions, Accounting can be a tough subject to learn. That’s where MyGuru helped me. I contacted Mark and team and told them what I needed. Within an hour or two Mark had responded with a member of his team who could tutor me in Accounting. Minaz was wonderful and helped me really understand the basics of accounting. She was patient, had answers for every question I had, and also understood my way of thinking and helped me turn it around. I would recommend MyGuru for any educational need. Mark has really excellent team members, the price is reasonable, and they got back to me right away.

Constance (one of MyGuru's Senior Tutors, and a PhD student at Northwestern University) was great. Cody (my son, who was receiving ACT Prep tutoring) really enjoyed her, his words were "She is a really good teacher."

Thank you for hooking me up with Phil (one of MyGuru's Senior finance, accounting, and statistics tutors) tonight - he is brilliant.

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

The founders of MyGuru were all private tutors in high school and college, and after going through the ACT, SAT, GMAT,and LSAT prep processes between the ages of 17-27, we realized there had to be a way to deliver high quality tutoring & test prep more affordably, but with the benefits of working with a company (relative to seeking out an individual tutor with questionable quality/background, etc.). We tried to create a company that provides a price point closer to an individual tutor while also delivering many of the benefits of working with a larger company (tutor quality screening, scheduling and payment services, facilitation of objective setting, design of tutoring packages, money back guarantee, etc.).

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

Our services are split approximately by: 25% high school tutoring, 25% college tutoring, 50% test prep (ACT/SAT/GRE/GMAT/MCAT/LSAT). Within academic tutoring, we have tutors available to help in almost any possible subject.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Students/customers looking for tutoring & test prep should realize two things: 1) you get out of tutoring or test prep what you put in. If you are diligent about studying/preparing, you will do well by following a variety of test prep strategies/plans, either classroom based or private 1-1 tutoring. Be sure to set objectives for individual sessions, as well as for the long term so you know what you're aiming for. 2) It's easy to pay way too much or way too little for private 1-1 tutoring services. One can find a GMAT tutor for anywhere from $20 per hour on Craig's List to $200 from a large test prep company. Our private 1-1 tutoring combines some of the best quality tutors around at a $50-$60 per hour price point by delivering a no frills offer in your home or local coffee shop and cutting away the deluge of unnecessary materials pushed by other firms.
