I started working one on one with Patrick 3 months ago and I couldn't be happier with my decision! I had previously taken his group fitness classes and always gotten a lot of out them. Working with him one on one has taken it to a new level. He motivates me to do things I would never do on my own. I train with Patrick 3 times a week and every workout is different, challenging, and makes me feel good about myself. I never thought I would look forward to "getting my butt kicked" :) Patrick is also a great nutrition coach. He laid out a plan for me and holds me accountable...just what I needed. We always talk about my progress and ways to improve. Investing in a personal trainer was one of the best investments I ever made. Patrick is highly motivating, personable, knowledgeable, and always brings a positive, fun attitude. I would highly recommend him.

I am actively working with Ellen. She is lovely and kind, an excellent listener who really wants to understand you as a person so you can reach your goals. I initially hired Ellen for some help with my resume, but went on to find her true value of helping me find the direction I want to go, to establish goals and to look at my career holistically and as part of my life, not in a silo. She is resourceful and professional to a tee. I know that we are on a journey together, and she is invested in me, which feels so good to have a partner to help navigate the path! I would recommend Ellen to anyone looking for some career insight, whether it's resume edits or help figuring out what kind of work will make you happier.

Laura is a natural relationship and life coach: intuitive, insightful, supportive, positive, human. She asks us pertinent questions that we don't see for ourselves. My partner and I have been doing coaching with Laura with a focus on how we communicate with one another, trust, staying in the present, keeping an eye on our pasts so we do not unconsciously let the past have too much influence on how we do our present. I recommend her interventions without hesitation.

We have been training with Elijah - Physical Peak – for a little over a year now. My husband and I both have had great results. We love the ease and convince of having him train us in our home, without that we wouldn’t be making the life style changes we both have needed. He has helped coach us on nutrition changes also. About half way through our year we got pregnant and I have been able to continue working with him through my whole pregnancy, my doctor has said I am doing great and my health, blood test, blood pressure etc. has been right on track through my whole pregnancy. We highly recommend Elijah and his services if you’re looking to make a long term lifestyle change and need some help and direction to make those changes! You will see great results following his advice and exercise plans!

I had a fantastic experience working with Victoria. Not only was she prompt and professional, she was fun intelligent and an excellent organizer of ideas. My resemu and cover letter needed a lot of help. Victoria restructured my resume from the ground up. We brainstormed, reworded and reorganized my resume in such a manner as it is now a much netter representation of my work/life experience. I recommend Victoria in every way . Not only will you have a good time working with her, but you will be proud of the result A+ Jack Cassidy Professional Musician and Music Educator

In mid-September, Positively Naperville received a letter to the editor from Loren Michaels Harris regarding an NPR.org story about the Ohio police release of graphic overdose photos featured on Sept. 12, 2016. As publisher of the hyper local monthly publication in a city focused on fighting addictions and drug abuse of all kinds, I was struck by Loren’s thoughtful, timely and meaningful words, especially as they related to local initiatives such as “Connect for Life,” “KidsMatter,” and Project H.E.L.P. His reference to being a motivational speaker and his never-ending story of survival prompted my wondering about a presentation to our Rotary Club of Naperville-Downtown. Our small Rotary club is always looking for 30-minute programs. Speakers are invited to present educational topics such as the one addressed in his letter. We talked, we met, Loren agreed and the date was set for Oct. 26. Though electronics failed to connect that afternoon, preventing members from viewing Loren’s video introduction, he punted ably, landed on his feet and started from the very beginning of his 54 years. The trials and tribulations that have contributed to Loren’s strength of character and determination live within an engaging story of surviving one birth mother, one adoptive mother, and 20 foster mothers. Against so many obstacles, Loren is a survivor of the foster care system who says his only source of continual healing from the scars of foster care comes from addressing the need for better protection of all children, especially from social media, neighbor to neighbor. Rotarians experienced a very compelling presentation by a man who appears to be at home with his powerful story, one that needs to be told over and over—with or without the video introduction.

I have trained with Sam over the last 7 years as I moved from high school to college, and now medical school. During that time Sam has helped me make fitness an activity that is both physically and mentally rewarding. Sam knows his craft inside and out, and knows how to structure workouts that fit whatever goals you have. He has helped me progress from not feeling comfortable in a gym to being able to try and succeed at exercises I could have never previously envisioned myself doing. Before I started training with Sam there was no chance I could do a pull-up, now Sam has helped me get to a point where there really isn’t an exercise I wouldn’t feel confident trying. Over my years training with Sam, I have gone through periods where due to school or other obligations I have let fitness take a backseat to other priorities. Sam has always helped me to get back on track, make time for working out, and appreciate the positive synergy that a commitment to fitness can have an all other aspects of life such as academic performance and general well-being. I can honestly say that the choice 7 years ago to start training with Sam was one of the best I have ever made!

From the moment I met Alex , I knew he was a person that could help me achieve new goals and also the one that would help change my life for the better. I started training with Alex last April. During the last 6 months I have been challenged and pushed by Alex, and he has taught me a great deal. He makes working out fun and inspires me to reach new goals. I have been very impressed by Alex's passion to help clients, his knowledge, and his ability to connect with his clients. Alex is very caring and attentive to what each client needs, what their limits are, and how far he can push them. He encourages and motivates me to do better, and yet he knows how much I am capable of. He deserves 5 out of 5 stars from me. I plan to continue to work with Alex.

Alex truly caters to the individual needs of his clients. He takes a comprehensive/holistic approach to training. He integrates personal knowledge, experience, and evidence-based research into the decision making process when determining the best fitness, recovery and nutrition plan for helping his clients. He is a wealth of knowledge and willingly shares information that he gains from attending continuing education courses/certification programs. Alex has numerous certifications and the personal experience to teach both conventional and unconventional training methods. I started 1:1 coaching with Alex in July of 2016. In addition to training 3 days per week with Alex, he provided me with the knowledge and tools to train on my own on our off days. Prior to starting my program with Alex, I worked out occasionally and was what I would consider to be “skinny fat”. I have always been slender and decently fit but would fatigue quickly with even the slightest amount of physical activity. Not only has Alex helped me achieve my top physical condition but also the best health. Alex helped develop a nutrition/meal plan for me that was effective and most importantly functional. I now feel confident in my ability to perform workouts independently and make responsible food choices. I feel like I am actively involved in the process. On days I feel like skipping a workout or a meal, Alex positively encourages me to stay on track. He has recommended several books and meditation programs to build my mind to be as strong as my body. I have done 1:1 coaching with Alex and have also been enrolled in his semi-private kettle bell, steel mace, and battle rope boot camps for almost a year. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED coaching with Alex! He is a great coach, teacher, motivator and mentor!

I don't know where to begin... Ashley helped me plan out my entire career path from my first year of college all the way to the day I received the offer letter from the employer. She doesn't only help you establish your career path she helps you rationally breakdown all the milestones you'll need to hit in order to accomplish your personal career goals. All in all, I owe many thanks to Ashley for my career growth. Without her expertise and advice I would not be in the position I am in today.

While working with a life coach, you can expect to confront issues that have been holding you back and preventing you from creating a reality you love to be in. As uncomfortable as confrontation can be, it’s often necessary for healing. Recognizing your issues, strengths, and weaknesses is a first step to wholeness and can provide invaluable guidance while on the path to living the life of your dreams. I have been a client of Mija's for over a year now and I can say that those uncomfortable situations have allowed me to stop seeing myself as the victim. Her guidance and motivation has given me the strength to change my life for the better. The change can be seen by me and those around me. The investment in me was the best thing I did for myself.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a life coach?

A professional, accredited life coach works with people to help them make important changes in their life, either growing in their profession or changing gears in their personal lives. They help clients turn their dreams or wishes into realistic, attainable goals. They guide people through the process of making life changes by helping them evaluate the steps they must take to reach a particular goal, then help them decide how — and whether — to take those steps in the most efficient, effective and rewarding way possible. A life coach acts as a motivator, strategist and accountability partner. Unlike a therapist, a life coach doesn’t help solve problems from your past — they’re focused on helping you move forward with new ways of acting and thinking that will help you reach your goals. Some people specialize in particular types of life coaching, including life balancing coaches, small business coaches, executive coaches and personal finance coaches. Some meet clients in person, while others hold consultations over the phone.

Regardless of which type of life coach you’re interested in, make sure the person holds an International Coach Federation (ICF) credential. There are three tiers of credentials: Associate, Professional and Master, which require coaching experience ranging from 100 hours to 2,500 hours.

What is a health coach?

A health coach is a service provider you can hire to help you realize your wellness goals. You can hire a health and wellness coach to guide you through life changes, keep you focused on weight loss or fitness goals, help boost your mental health, and more. Many health coaches work with their clients for set periods of time as the client moves toward a measurable goal. Wellness coaches come from varying backgrounds, and may have different areas of focus depending on their education and training. Research potential coaches by reading their reviews, researching their academic and personal backgrounds, and learning about any certifications they have earned from coaching institutes. Often, health and wellness coaches sell coaching packages ranging from three to six months or longer, depending on the client’s needs. The average national cost for an individual health coach session ranges from $60 to $90, although prices may range as low as $30 or up to $130 or more, depending on your location and the coach.

How much does a life coach cost?

A life coach helps clients set and reach professional and personal goals, develop positive habits, and deal with stress. Some people meet with a life coach once or twice, while others form an ongoing professional relationship, meeting regularly in person or on the phone. The average national cost to meet with a life coach ranges from $80 to $130 an hour. Some coaches offer per-session pricing, especially for one-time meetings; expect to pay an average of $100-$125. People who want to work with a coach over a period of time to explore life transitions, career growth or lifestyle changes may be able to get discounted pricing in a package. For example, three 60-minute sessions cost an average of $300, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $350, and four 60- to 90-minute sessions plus unlimited contact between sessions cost an average of $400. Some specific types of coaching, such as relationship or marriage coaching, cost more than standard life coaching. For instance, three 60-minute relationship coaching sessions cost an average of $500, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $550, and six 60- to 90-minute sessions cost an average of $650 when purchased as a package. Training and experience can also affect the cost of hiring a life coach. An Associate Certified Coach, who holds a certification that requires only 60 hours of training and 100 hours of coaching experience, will charge less than a Master Certified Coach, who typically has at least 200 hours of training and 2,500 hours of coaching experience.

What is a holistic wellness coach?

When you want to reach new heights with your health and wellness, consider hiring a holistic wellness coach. Much like a health coach, a holistic wellness coach is focused on your well-being and meets with you in one-on-one sessions to help you identify and reach your targeted goals. A holistic wellness coach will typically have you take all components of your life into account when working to achieve your goals. If your goal is to lose weight, a holistic wellness coach will not only offer recommendations for your diet and exercise, but also discuss your emotional health, your work/life balance, your spiritual side, and each area of your life that affects your ability to follow a nutrition and fitness plan.

Although they are highly motivational and often can help clients achieve great results, holistic wellness coaches are not professional health care providers or registered dietitians. Different institutes and training centers provide certifications for holistic wellness coaching, so be sure to research your coach and read their reviews to understand more about their techniques and training.

Why get a life coach?

People of all ages and in all careers have called in a life coach. Life coaches are accredited professionals who can help you figure out the tangible changes you can make in your life to reach your goals; they can even help you turn your dreams into goals, if you’re not sure where to go next. A life coach can also help people find their purpose in life. Life coaching clients often have an idea of what they want to do, such as help people or work with animals, but don’t know how to turn that passion into a career. A life coach can help clients work through the options to find a clear path with concrete steps that lead to an attainable goal. A life coach can also help clients make a major career change, such as starting a new business. Life coaches can help clients develop better habits that will make them more successful, acting as an accountability partner. Life coaches also often guide their clients through major transitions in life, such as a career change or other stressful situations that are made easier with guidance from a neutral third party.
