The service: Moving out of my 22nd floor condo building apartment in downtown (Streeterville) Chicago to the far north suburbs of Illinois (Winthrop Harbor), with the estimated distance of just under 60 miles, thanks to a little basic research using Google Maps. Details of the Moving (items, boxes, etc.): -8 fully-loaded boxes containing clothes, linens, important books/documents, securely-wrapped kitchen ware (eg, glasses, plates) and small household appliances. The average size of the box was either 20x20x20 or 22x22x22. -3 different sized tables including. I didn't get a chance to disassemble one of them thinking i'd just leave it behind. As for the other two, I took the time to disassemble the legs which I then tucked away underneath the table tops and taped securely in place, thinking I could try to make things easier for the movers by making the process as efficient as possible. -4 pairs of neatly stacked chairs (total of 8 chairs, altogether). -1 antique two-person sofa with a heavy-set wood frame that you simply can't take apart. -1 queen-sized bed including mattress, box spring and frame (which I thought I'd also leave behind). -2 blue storage bins loaded with cook ware and smaller electronics/portables -some accessory items including a tall, long-standing light fixture and a vacuum which I thought about leaving behind as well. -2 overly-filled open-top boxes with trash and garbage -a wine rack and dresser which I actually donated to one of the building maintenance people instead of trashing it Why I chose Apex over four top-rated professional moving companies that I researched about on yelp, google and from word of mouth: Because I was a little pressed with time, I used Thumbtack for the first time and saw a few moving companies reach out to me with pretty reasoable offers. For someone who has moved around quite often, I've learned to do whatever you can to make it easier for the movers from the time of pick-up to the actual drop-off. With that said, I don't always believe in hourly-paid services regardless of industry. There are those who milk the system, providing little service but know how to turn a profit. As a customer, I just wanted to keep it straightforward and honest. I called around, asked for quotes and questioned exactly where each of my hard-earned dollar goes towards. I noticed most places charging hourly rates, sometimes sending over 2 or 3 people to do the job. I also noticed most places charging for 2 or 3-hour minimums. Expecting to pay at the very least, $250-375, I certainly couldn't see myself forking up anything over $650. That's just how it goes. So, I tried my best to make the process very efficient, for my sake as a customer. I kept everything straightforward. I explained exactly in detail what I was moving, how many people I felt could get the job done effectively and what my price point was set at. With that said, I also knew that it takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes in driving distance from downtown Chicago to Winthrop Harbor on a good day. To get the most value, I looked at ways to save time on the loading. I had the building manager assist by reserving the elevator to facilitate moving efforts. From the way I looked at it, I couldn't see this taking any longer than 4 hours at most including the driving itself. So I reached out to Adam from Apex, explained my situation and asked about the $100 flat-fee for travel, which included the truck and the distance. I wanted to take advantage of that especially after other places were trying to mark up their prices by playing into the "well, there could be traffic..." and suggesting that it could take up to 5-7 hours, which I thought was a bit ridiculous. When I called Apex, Adam realized that I wasn't messing around. I told him that I really didn't want to spend more than $500 or so. I also told him I didn't think 3 people would be necessary for the job. Realistically, I knew this would take probably 3.5-4 hours altogether so I wanted to be fair and said I'd be willing to pay $450 to get the job done. He was more than receptive to the idea especially even after I reminded him that I'd be fine with paying a little more if needed. So I just finished up with the move-out today, which went better than I even expected. The two gentlemen had arrived at the loading dock, at least 15 minutes ahead, called me to inform me and even communicated with the building manager directly to coordinate the use of the elevator. These guys were very professional and even down-to-earth. We probably could've chatted for hours but we both realized how important it was not to waste each other's valuable time. I felt awful for jam-packing boxes to full-capacity and asking if they could be kind enough to help with the last minute request in throwing the trash out. Even when I hesitated about taking the bed, the sofa and table, they were so encouraging and helpful, making it all work out. They even disassembled the bed frame and treated each and every item with care, which I appreciated. The move itself took just about 4 hours. For the service they provided, it was definitely worth the $450. Everyone has been accommodating with any of my needs and requests. They're very professional and respectful. Most importantly, they were very open and honest, not worrying about getting the run-around that others would easily take advantage of. Thank you again to everyone at Apex for all your help, making it such a painless move. I would certainly recommend them to anyone looking for a trustworthy, hardworking moving company. And if anyone truly wants to know that I am not fabricating my story, you can certainly reach out to me by email. Ed Mangubat email: closetchef@secretsofaclosetchef.com

We hired Ron to install a new garbage disposal which might include moving the existing pipes. I had originally asked him to install a new kitchen faucet also, but then my husband decided to do that part himself. Ron was still happy to come out just for the disposal. He gave us a quote for the installation and communicated very thoroughly with me about the details of the job. When Ron came out for the installation, he measured the disposal and suggested exchanging it for a smaller model to avoid moving the pipes. My husband agreed and Ron went to store to purchase a smaller disposal. Overall, we were happy with his work and price for the job.

I needed to have some work done in the house. Raul the general contractor from Ram Renovation was referred to us by one of our neighbors who just completed a kitchen remodel with them. Needing some work done in the house, we decided to give them a call since their kitchen came out really nice! We received previous estimates from 4 other contractors and Raul was the last to meet with us. After meeting with the other contractors we weren't looking to change the layout of the kitchen, until we met with him! Raul opened our eyes and gave us ideas that no one else bothered to show. For the second meeting, he came and showed us a 3D design of the new kitchen layout. We opened a wall and made use of every space possible. Our new kitchen remodel is amazing, it totally changed the look of the house and now everything flows well together. We really enjoyed working with Raul, he has a great team and their work speaks for itself. I love it and I think it makes the house so much more beautiful!

We had Marek demo and install a new kitchen backsplash for us. His wife, Gracie, handles scheduling/communication and does an amazing job. We were on a tight schedule for both the demo and install due to other trades working in our kitchen and Marek/Gracie did an excellent job on communicating and getting the job done right and on time.

It's never easy to have someone at work in your home, but Steve not only repaired our broken kitchen drawers, he made the entire process easy with his attention to detail and easy going nature. Thank you so much, Steve!

I'd recommend Advantex for any kitchen remodel project. Jim Klingbiel of Advantex Restoration, Inc. said what he was going to do and did what he said. While there was the normal ordering wait for our cabinets and counters, Jim was very good at managing the preliminary work to be done just in time with a minimum of disruption to or family. His people are very courteous and extremely mindful of cleanliness.

I would highly recommend Signature Home Construction. I used them for my complete kitchen remodel. Larry is great to work with and extremely responsive to needs and requests. He and his team are professional, prompt, and honest. They offer great suggestions due to their knowledge and experience. Things I would have never even thought of made a huge difference in kitchen. I have a small kitchen and they miraculously made it look much larger and function in a way I didn’t think possible. They are the complete package...electric, gas, plumbing, carpentry, etc. Awesome company! Adding a couple photos

Ed has done a few projects for me and I've been extremely pleased with his work. He repaired my kitchen ceiling after a soffit was removed and the ceiling is perfect. He also painted my entire condo from floor to ceiling and did an incredible job! He's extremely meticulous and a perfectionist. I also feel very comfortable leaving him alone to work at my place. Every night I came home, my place was immaculate and the paint and tools were even perfectly placed in the same spot every evening. The name of Ed's business "Perfect Interiors, LLC" is exactly that! You will have an excellent client experience trusting Ed with your remodeling, painting, construction plans. Thanks!

This was my first project on Thumbtack. I purchased a townhome back in August and new I had to remodel the kitchen. I found three designers, met with them for an in home consultation and choose Andrei Viscrbov from Design from A to V to do my kitchen remodel project. I chose Andrei because on that first meeting, he listened to what I wanted for my kitchen remodel, he understood what I said and was able to tell me how he was going to do it and at what costs. He laid out the budget for the whole project at that first meeting. The project is done now and I am extremely pleased with the job he and his business partners did! We would have been on budget but I added a few new items I decided I needed after that first meeting. The pictures attached don't do full service to all the work that they did but it is a small section of the work he did. My kitchen went from being almost unusable to the kitchen I wanted. Thank you Andrei. My projects scope was - demolish the kitchen - new floor from entry way to kitchen and into the dining room - take down wall between kitchen and dining room - new cabinets and countertops and an island - all new lighting from entry way to kitchen - move plumbing to position sink in a better spot - paint all of the first floor and install new baseboard - new dishwasher, range hood, kitchen sink and faucet with garbage disposal - all in all a big project for me I highly recommend Andrei and the construction team he works with.

I hired Variant to help me with branding and the interior remodel of my coffee shop. It was my first time hiring an interior designer so I wasn't sure what to expect but they were great to work with and the renovation looks beautiful. I could not have asked for a better experience or outcome. I would refer them to anyone looking to renovate their business or home.

Our experience with Lauren Marshall Interiors was terrific. We worked with Lauren on the renovation (gut job) of a bathroom in our 100 year old home. Because the size of the bathroom is small, it was important to choose appropriate materials and fixtures that modernized the bathroom without compromising the integrity of an older home. Lauren was able to design the space and work within our budget to achieve those two objectives. She provided great visualizations and walked us through the project. Although she had a vision, she was receptive to my input. She delivered all design specifications on time and within budget. She did not rush me to make decisions and gave me lots of options for materials. Lauren communicated well and often to ensure the project was progressing as planned. Additionally, Lauren was punctual to all meetings both at our home and showrooms. Lauren is a wonderful designer with a terrific eye for detail. I highly recommend Lauren Marshall Interiors for any and all home projects, whether a gut kitchen or bathroom job, or giving a room a fresh new look.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
