Joe trimmed our big trees thoroughly despite the fact they were a bit difficult to get to. His fee was fair and he was great about communicating with us. Knowing that he can provide other services in addition to the trees will make our choice easy when working through our "to do" list. Glad we found Joe!

The last few homes I sold were staged by Katy A Designs and I received outstanding feedback from buyers and agents on how great the homes showed. We actually had buyers inquire about purchasing the furnishings. The styles, colors and comfort brought into the homes were spot on. Thank you...

I am just starting to work with Julie. My project is the freshening up of a 40+ year old wood-paneled family room/kitchen. She arrived promptly to our first 1 hour meeting and came prepared with ideas ranging from a full demo to paint and accents that would help with the space, even to brighten up our fireplace. She had already set up a Pinterest board and easily discussed topics including layouts, lighting, furniture selection and easy DIY projects. I am looking forward to continuing our conversation and seeing the results.

This was my first project on Thumbtack. I purchased a townhome back in August and new I had to remodel the kitchen. I found three designers, met with them for an in home consultation and choose Andrei Viscrbov from Design from A to V to do my kitchen remodel project. I chose Andrei because on that first meeting, he listened to what I wanted for my kitchen remodel, he understood what I said and was able to tell me how he was going to do it and at what costs. He laid out the budget for the whole project at that first meeting. The project is done now and I am extremely pleased with the job he and his business partners did! We would have been on budget but I added a few new items I decided I needed after that first meeting. The pictures attached don't do full service to all the work that they did but it is a small section of the work he did. My kitchen went from being almost unusable to the kitchen I wanted. Thank you Andrei. My projects scope was - demolish the kitchen - new floor from entry way to kitchen and into the dining room - take down wall between kitchen and dining room - new cabinets and countertops and an island - all new lighting from entry way to kitchen - move plumbing to position sink in a better spot - paint all of the first floor and install new baseboard - new dishwasher, range hood, kitchen sink and faucet with garbage disposal - all in all a big project for me I highly recommend Andrei and the construction team he works with.

I was moving from SF to Chicago but had to stay in California until a few days before I started my new job to finish things off for work. With that said, I had absolutely no time to fly to Chicago and get pieces of furniture set as well as having to fix and install them (not very handy whatsoever) and I just wanted to get to my new apartment and have everything completed and done for me. And then came Nichole. I told her my situation and that i would not be moving into Chicago until a week before I started my new job and just needed someone to do the logistics and operations of my room and we would have to communicate everything through text and emails. She literally made all the difference in the world without having to worry one bit of how I was going to get things done. She gave me room design templates, colors, furniture pieces, art work, and she designed it especially for the type of style I personally like and wanted. I just landed in Chicago yesterday and the room looked amazing. She than said that there was a piece missing in one of the accent chairs that she reordered and she came the next day to fix it. P.S I also realized that I wanted a bigger bed and she was so kind to just say "let me know when it gets here and I'll take care of it," because I know I don't how do that myself. Anyways, if I could give her 6 stars I would. For the price she is offering and the amount of hours she spent on my room as well as the hours we communicated back and forth to set up my room the way I wanted, she was worth every penny and more! Thank you Nichole - I will see you again when I purchase a home in the future. You know who I'll be calling

Lidia is great to work with. She has done the majority of decorating and furniture suggestions/purchases for Townhouse. The best part is that she was able to get us a great discount on furnishings and decorating pieces. She was able to understand what look I was going for and the colors I liked. She coordinated all of the contractors that I needed for the job and took care of everything else. Even when I couldn’t be home for a job, she was there to direct everything and make sure things went as planned. Throughout each step of the design process, she presented excellent options that were always within our budget. She has excellent sense of color and pattern, and she understands how to design spaces. Each of her subcontractors was outstanding and added to the success of our design. We are looking forward to our next project with her.

Our experience with Lauren Marshall Interiors was terrific. We worked with Lauren on the renovation (gut job) of a bathroom in our 100 year old home. Because the size of the bathroom is small, it was important to choose appropriate materials and fixtures that modernized the bathroom without compromising the integrity of an older home. Lauren was able to design the space and work within our budget to achieve those two objectives. She provided great visualizations and walked us through the project. Although she had a vision, she was receptive to my input. She delivered all design specifications on time and within budget. She did not rush me to make decisions and gave me lots of options for materials. Lauren communicated well and often to ensure the project was progressing as planned. Additionally, Lauren was punctual to all meetings both at our home and showrooms. Lauren is a wonderful designer with a terrific eye for detail. I highly recommend Lauren Marshall Interiors for any and all home projects, whether a gut kitchen or bathroom job, or giving a room a fresh new look.

We first worked with Renae for Christmas decorating for our restaurant. We received so many compliments on the decorations that we asked her for advice on how to improve the existing design. She gave us insightful feedback and recommendations that wouldn't cost a lot. All the changes were so positive that we used her to fully design our new restaurant dining room. She is very creative with ways to design very affordably and respected our budget.

We needed to stage our house very quickly to move to the West Coast. After we scheduled our consultation. We were sent a detailed list of things and how the project will be managed. Within 5 days our house was decluterred and staged. We needed to have our furniture moved right away so Sophia had all our things organized with movers and had new furniture staged in the house. Our realtor just had to bring a photographer to get our house listed. Everything was done quickly and efficiently. We felt at ease with this stressful move and ended selling our house in 9 days! Thanks to Space mkr’s team Amazon style our house looked like a magazine home! We moved 2 weeks ago in our new house! We liked the design Sophia did at our old home so Much, she will be designing and planning the layout Of our new home. Our family had a positive experience and loved working with a fun and creative team! Thank you again!

My husband and I love working with James. We appreciate his professionalism, his candidness, his humor, and his amazing sense of style. We moved from our downtown Chicago high-rise to a home located in suburban Hinsdale. James has transformed our dated Georgian Colonial into a refined, stylish, and sophisticated house we are happy to entertain and reside in. We always trust his design choices and are amazed by his photographic memory with the details of our home. He furnished and stylized the décor throughout our entire house. Specifically, he selected furniture, lamps, light fixtures, rugs, paint colors, tile, wall décor, window treatments, and accessories for the Living Room, Dining Room, Family Room, Kitchen, Home Office, Master Bedroom, Foyer, Mudroom, Powder Room, Hallway Bath, and the Outdoor Pool Area.

Dave arrived on time for the appointment, even though our initial request was to address interior design specifically for our walls and windows, he provided expert advice on other items including design choices and suggested palette to unify all elements while keeping our Family room focused as a room our children may use. I greatly appreciated his ability to work within our budget. We do not have a lot of money for a whole house make over; David proved great design can be affordable and obtainable within a family friendly budget. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and look forward to continuing working with David in the future. Most highly recommended!

I was planning an addition to my home. I had no clue as to how complicated it could be. Between permits, the zoning requirements and not to mention the contractor problems that could have occurred. I was referred to Illusione Design by a friend. He said they did a great job for him and know I know why. Mr. Quintero and his team lead me through the whole project with professional advise and a level of experience and professionalism I have not experienced in a long time. What I now know could have been a really trying situation, went off without a hitch. The plans were done in no time and as far as knowing your way around city hall and all the codes. These guys really blew my mind. So yes. if you're planning any type of project, I think you would be smart to give them a call. I'm sure you will be pleased with the services they provide.

Hired LUX Staging to stage my clients townhome in Arlington Heights. I walked in and couldn’t believe how beautiful it turned out. Shannon did a wonderful job making every room look attractive. The townhome was under contract in only 2 days after previously not having any luck. The pricing was reasonable and her movers were professional and careful. I highly recommend Shannon for staging. She was a pleasure to work with.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
