I have been studying music composition with Jon for over 3 years. He has also beautifully played the accompaniments for my composed songs (all of several instruments) and recorded my songs at his home recording studio. Jon is a very dedicated teacher who loves to teach, and has a deep and diverse knowledge of all things musical. He is knowledgeable in all genres of music, and will happily teach any facet of music, and any type of music that his students get excited about. His knowledge of music theory is amazing, his notation skills meticulous, and his ability to instantly transcribe or play any recorded music he hears is almost unbelievable. One of my favorite things to do with Jon is to bring in a CD of some kind of music that excites me, but that I know little about, and have him listen to it, and instantly analyze and explain it to me, from a compositional standpoint. Jon is always on time for our sessions, and is always completely attentive, creatively innovative and deeply involved in the teaching process when with me.

I have just hired Matt Peterson through Thumbtack to provide a series of piano lessons as a Christmas present to my wife. Thumbtack worked out exceedingly well in securing an exceptional local professional who meets my immediate needs. This was all accomplished in two days and Mr. Peterson has even created an artistic certificate with a holiday theme to present to my wife Christmas Day. Thanks Thumbtack!!! You've made my Christmas very special with your courteous and efficient service!!!! -Jack Bajor

I took lessons with Max in the summer of 2014 and 2015 and learning and hanging from Max has been one of the main reasons I decided to dedicate my life to working on music. He challenged me with life and music concepts that have been a big part of my life. Max was extremely committed to our lessons. For example, I would pick a transcription for both of us to learn and we would play it together and he would help me with certain rough spots, break it down and talk about the history. I've never had a teacher do that for me before. Max gave me essential information in a very open and informative way and was very down to earth and friendly in the way he taught. I flourish when the people I study with are open to work on what interests me and give me essential things to work on that I haven't been thinking about. If I wanted to work on Katy Perry songs, he would take me seriously and do whatever he could to help me play Katy Perry songs. Too often teachers assume I know things, but he was very thorough and made sure I had everything I needed. Max showed up on time to every lesson and was the type of teacher that was so invested in helping me that he wouldn't be looking at the clock every five minutes. My brother was on the ultimate frisbee team at my high school as a freshman when Max was a Senior. My brother told me that Max was a role model and inspired him to be on the ultimate frisbee team at his college. That makes two of us! Max was one of the key people in my high school years who inspired me to pursue my passion. Studying with Max has made me a deeper, more creative, and more down to earth person and musician.

Al is always on time and always come with a positive attitude. He is helping our son to “shape” his piano skills making him work on pieces that challenge him. I like that Al doesn’t make my son feel bad about his mistakes and encourages him to put his personal touch in what he plays. I really recomend Al as a piano teacher.

I've known Matthew for several years and he's one of the most accomplished guitarists I've ever met. I can guarantee his lessons will improve your picking/ playing/ progressions immensely. His ear is first rate -- he can teach anything from rock to classical and everything in between -- and he's a very patient and skilled instructor. Thanks again, Matthew, for all your awesome guitar knowledge!

About

I believe in taking a multifaceted approach to learning. For example, in composition and music theory lessons, I make sure to address as many different aspects of the students' work as possible, e.g., harmony/counterpoint, motivic development, timbre, large-scale form, etc. in order for the student to reach his or her highest expressive potential. In flute lessons, I often encourage students to sing the melodies that they are learning. That way they can first connect with the musical phrasing without worrying about the technical aspects of the instrument. The intuitive grasp of the melody that the students acquire through singing can then inform their musical choices and expression when they play it on the flute.
