Loved having Chef Rich! I really want to do all of my dinners this way. What is better than hosting in your own home, then having your dishes washed and actually being able to enjoy time with your guests?! Food was perfect - truffle cream over sea bass with my favorite - flourless chocolate cake - for dessert. Not only was the food great, but also the Chef and the woman who came with him. I will for sure be using them again (along with all of my friends who I told already haha)

Great company. Delivered a taco dinner to our students with a gorgeous eclair cake. They even put a message on the cake. On time. Only minus: no serving utensil for the cake, but we improvised.

Trying to plan a banquet from a thousand miles away, in a problematic downtown Chicago location, is not an easy task. Luckily for me, I found Ravi at Chic Chef Catering here on Thumbtack. Ravi took care of everything, handling all the location's inherent difficulties competently and professionally. He stayed with his staff for the entire event, and made sure all of our 80+ guests were happy and well-fed. More importantly, I didn't need to worry about the caterers and the food and all the rest of it, because it was all in his capable hands. I could instead focus on our guests. We chose a Mediterranean menu--with a vegetarian option to meet some of our guests' needs. Everything was delicious and there was plenty of it! Many thanks and much appreciation to Ravi and his crew! We would absolutely use Chic Chef Catering again!

We were so pleased with Inglenook Catering!! We have never used a caterer or Thumbtack. Food was delicious! Everything was hot and ready to go! We chose Lemon Chicken, Stuffed Tenderloin, Lasagna, Roasted Veggies and Taco Salad. All were excellent! My idea of roasted vegetables is usually peppers and onions. This was cauliflower, yellow squash, zucchini and carrots. It was great! Plenty of food and it was very easy to work with Inglenook. We hope to use them again! Thanks so much!

Overall, I was very pleased with everything. Food was good, display was good and had a good experience working with Loretta. I wanted white servewear instead of clear and she was able to accommodate. I would say that the food dishes were much better than the dessert (cupcakes). Some of the bites were also smaller than I expected. That said, no complaints...would use Loretta again in the future!

We have had many private chefs and caterers. We have found our “go to” chef service. Food was amazing. Mike and Matt were fun. They entertained the kids at the bar as they cooked, served.. and cleaned up. If you have never had a personal chef, try them. If you have before, uplevel to them. And by the way.. the cost was a bargain. Dinner for 8 with wine and beer pairing Less than $100 per person Insanely goid!

Chef Karen prepared a delicious meal for myself and my friends to celebrate my birthday. Her menu options were plentiful. She catered to my vegan friends and kept us carnivores happy too. The food tasted delicious. Her prices were affordable and fair. She was very responsive to my emails, calls, and texts. Her casserole and soup dinnerware were beautiful. Dinner service was slower than I expected because she arrived later than she planned.

Clarissa was great -- very responsive, flexible, and accommodating. In addition, the food -- for a baby shower brunch -- was excellent! We had mini frittatas, French toast, mini pancake stacks, fruit parfaits, mini bagels with lox and cream cheese, fruit skewers, and excellent croissant sausage sandwiches with aged cheddar! Clarissa also brought garnishes for Blood Marys and mimosas and was willing to provide coffee at the last moment when I realized we didn't have it! I'd highly recommend.

This was my first time hiring a caterer, and I was not disappointed. This was also my first time using Thumbtack. Had never even heard of it before googling “caterers near me”. Carol of Food with Flair did a wonderful job catering a family outdoor BBQ at my home for my dad’s 90th birthday. We had 25 people in attendance, and many commented on how good the food was. She was very responsive from the moment she and I were matched through Thumbtack, all the way through my event. She helped plan the meal, making suggestions on food items that were popular at other BBQs she had catered; arrived promptly the day of the event with much of the food prep completed and the remainder completed once she arrived; provided the warming trays, serving dishes, and serving utensils; grilled the meat (hamburgers and chicken) on my Weber grill; set up the serving table; had the meal ready in a timely fashion; put away leftovers for me; and left my kitchen clean. She also was able to work with dietary restrictions. She offered to provide paper goods and make arrangements for other supplies (e.g. canopy), which I declined. She brought two pineapple upside down cakes (my Dad’s favorite), and because we had neglected to discuss which of us would provide the candles, she decided to play it safe and brought a “9” & a “0” candle for one of the cakes. For the other cake she had a friend create a diecut that read “Happy 90th Birthday” in colors that coordinated with the cake. It was a nice, thoughtful surprise. While I had thought about asking whether she offered tastings, I didn’t due to the small size of my party; the short time frame between booking the party and the event itself; and her experience as an executive chef. I trusted that the food would be good, and it was. But I can’t share whether she offers tastings or not. My husband and I were very pleased with the service Carol provided and would definitely use her again.

Kristin catered our annual holiday luncheon this year. It was the first time I was putting on together for the firm, so I really wanted to offer something special. Kristin put together a delicious, gourmet lunch that was a cut above what we have experienced in the past. So many people complimented and thanked me. The portions were generous (we had lots of leftovers) and she worked with us to get something really wonderful with the budget we had to work with. I will definitely use Kristin again!

Wow! I couldn't have asked for a better chef. Chez Mikey and his sous chef Diana were on time, dressed professionally, prepared delicious food, cleaned up, and gave us a marvelous experience. He worked with our budget and was very friendly. The dishes were plated very nicely. Not only was the food excellent but very appealing to the eye. I will definitely hire him again and I highly recommend him to anyone looking to hire a personal chef.

Maya was super responsive when we reached out to her, unlike other vendors who took days to get back Maya responded in a couple hours. We immediately liked that about her. She's also super helpful even outside of just food... during our walk through of our venue, she helped us nail down important details and timing of events. She definitely knows what she's doing and is experienced. The food is great and there are plenty of options. All of our guests commented on how yummy the food was. Would highly recommend.

Rebecca is a master chef. Simple as that. I booked Puffs of Doom for an anniversary dinner (with two small kids, it's hard to get out on a week night). We collaborated on a menu that met my price point and that was just the start. She came in, cooked in our kitchen and set down a meal that was as good if not better than what you would get at an upscale restaurant. It was flavorful and unique while still fitting our requests. She and her partner were immaculate in cleaning and keeping the kitchen orderly throughout the preparation and serving process. They even went so far as to box up our leftovers in our tupperware. For a private dining or catering experience, I would highly recommend Puffs of Doom. Simply an amazing experience.

We hired three-legged tacos for a private party. It was outdoors and casual, the guests knew there were tacos but did not know what to expect. The whole night there was a line for tacos, for seconds, for thirds. People did not stop getting up to get more food. It was so delicious. Most of our guests had never had some of these flavors before, never mind the combinations of flavors. The whole thing was just great. As the three-legged tacos crew was leaving, our guests just spontaneously applauded. Over tacos. They are that good. Now we are finding reasons to have Sam and his crew come back.

Chef Yu and his sous chef were amazing. They were prompt, reliable, organized, helpful, polite, and made sure that my guests were happy. The food was delicious and the presentation was gorgeous. I was so grateful for their helpfulness during prep time, so I could get myself and my kids ready. While I was helping my kids finish their homework before our party, Chef Yu was arranging flowers and setting the table without me even asking. It was kind of like having my mom in the kitchen with me, because like her, Chef Yu just looked around to see what needed to be done and he did it. Effortless! I highly recommend Fyusion dining for their professionalism, as well as their unique and interesting menu options!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
