We're so glad that we hired Rob to paint our new house. We hired him to paint before we moved in and were pleasantly surprised that he was also able to check/snake our drains, install our dining room lighting, and will be mounting our TV above our fireplace (once I get around to ordering it...). His prices were reasonable and he was exceptionally friendly and easy to work with. He even went back and fixed some areas of paint that we messed up when we installed a new thermostat. Our home looks great and we will definitely be using his services again-- he really is an all-around great resource for home improvements.

Mr. Acosta did a complete roof system and exterior painting for me. He was professional in all aspects of the job from bidding to follow-up after work was done. His price was fair and he explained every detail that I had questioned. I have also seen first hand interior remodel work that he has done and was impressed.

Joel was great to work with. Always kept me appraised of what he was doing and how long it would take. He did an amazing job painting the interior of our new house, including being patient as we changed paint colors after he already painted 2 rooms. Several of our friends have already asked for his business cards as a result of seeing the work he did in our house. I would highly recommend JT's Painting and Design. His work is first rate and his prices are more than reasonable! In fact, he is currently painting the exterior of the home we are moving out of and it looks amazing too. Once we are moved he is going to do extensive work to walls, ceilings, and trim on the interior. We can't wait to see the finished product.

I highly recommend Joe. His work performance was exemplary. Very trustworthy and personable. Cost was very reasonable and short timespan for completion of work from the time of estimate to finish. Job consisted of interior painting and odd/end jobs one never gets around to doing.

Essential Painting-Interior, one-coat, same color Pros: Arrived on time, very professional, easy to work with, did an excellent job, thorough clean-up when finished Cons: The work took a little longer than expected but considering the care, attention to detail exhibited and the “do it right the first time” attitude, I can’t complain. As well, the job required additional labor which I had not accounted for when requesting the original quote. On 09/28/2016, the painters arrived on time, which alone was impressive considering the number of contractors I’ve dealt with that either showed up much later than the scheduled appointment time or didn’t show up at all. The painter in charge reviewed the work to be done with me while the others got their equipment out of the truck. He took a look around and presented an estimate that was a bit higher than the original, sight unseen quote I had received through Thumbtack. He explained that the two-tone walls, separated by a chair rail would require more time to paint but said he could make it work with the lower price. I’m on a tight budget with this project so I'm really glad the people on-site are flexible enough to make adjustments on the fly. That alone earned lots of respect. Overall, my experience with Essential Painting was very positive. I’ll certainly keep their contact information for future projects! -James

Tabitha and her crew painted the whole interior of our house. The quality was good, the pricing was very reasonable... maybe they could have been just a little neater. Had to have her come back and clean-up a little more even though she said they were done.

When we were getting our house ready to sell, Michael White re-did the drywall in our upstairs dormer and in our basement rec room. They were very different jobs -- repair in one and complete replacement in the other -- but in both cases, his experience let him diagnose the needs quickly, and then he worked hard and paid close attention to detail during construction. The results are excellent and have drawn compliments from prospective buyers, and they've given us peace of mind in a lasting improvement to the home.

Ryan and his crew painted the entire interior of my new home in just the amount of time they estimated and did a great job! Very professional, polite and the price was right. I was referred to them by a friend who also had work done by Cutting Edge, and I'm glad I called them! I highly recommend them to anyone looking to paint their entire house or just a couple rooms.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
