This was a big move for us moving from Chicago to a small town. The movers took pride in what they were doing. The owner of the company even came to check on us. Affordable and good at what they do. I would hire them for my next move.

Chicagoland Moving and Storage was beyond what I could have asked for with my move. They were attentive, polite, responsive, and fast. The move was a breeze and had no issues. The price was very fair for a great team of movers. They even brought me the boxes for my move asap and made my packing process easy and painless. I will definitely use them again in the future and recommend them to anyone I know who is moving and needs help. Thank you!

Brian was extremely easy to work with and very friendly. He installed my new sink, faucet and disposal in half the time he said it was going to take. He checked all the pipes and connections and tightened up everything that needed it. He was very affordable. I paid what was originally quoted with a very minimal amount up-charge for materials he used which I knew in advance and was prepared for. There was no mess for me to clean up after he was done either. I am so happy with the work he did and glad that I chose him for this project.

I had the best experience with Liberty Movers yesterday! I received reminder calls and emails thdcdsy before, and the foreman, Ross, called on their way to my home. He and his crew Danny and Marcell were friendly, professional, and extremely hard working. Ross estimated six hours for the job and finished in five! There were no hidden charges and I could not be more thrilled. Thank you to all! Highly recommend.

I enjoyed working with Granat LLC -- they were on time, professional, and handled my furniture with great care. I would recommend them for any moving job that you may have. I used them for "micro-moving" services (only a couch and loveseat), but I would trust them to do a moving job of any size. Great value for my $$ too.

So glad we found these guys! I was very edgy about the whole process of moving an upright piano, but the J.C. Movers & Lumper Services, Inc. Team. The team couldn't have made the process any easier! Flexible scheduling, great at emailing and calling back. Simple price estimation and a great affordable price! The crew that showed up were friendly, swift, and skillful. Thank so much!

I was a little skeptical moving with this company as I have always moved myself or used a big name moving company. I received quotes from the big name companies and was shocked at what they were going to charge me, plus it would be days until my items would arrive as they were going to unload my things in a warehouse and reload when they found another move going to the same place. That was unacceptable to me. I contacted Mark and asked him for a quote and what their process for moving was. I explained what I was moving, sent pictures and he sent me a quote. Very affordable, his method made sense, he would rent the appropriate size U-Haul truck and his team would come in and load and drive to your new location and unload, then return the truck and drive home. No overhead or need to wait for another load and your things stay locked in the same truck until it is unloaded. This process again made moving more affordable. I asked for references and Mark gave me several to call. The references gave glowing reports so I went ahead and hired them. The group came on Tuesday to load the truck in Delafield WI and arrived and unloaded the truck in Fishers IN on Wednesday (5 hr drive). (I boxed my stuff up prior to their arrival) They were professional, personable, quick to respond and made a stressful process comfortable. I had some expensive items that I needed handled with care and specially wrapped and they did a great job wrapping them and making sure they arrived in great shape. I also had a scared cat that wouldn't come down from the cabinets and they assisted me with retrieving him! Thanks! I would highly recommend this company for moving as they are affordable, respectful, flexible and trustworthy. I will call them again for my next move! Thanks!!

Joe Greiss came out the very next day to fix our dishwasher. He is a very personable and competent young man. He can do many different things so if you are looking for a handyman, I would highly recommend him. He does go above and beyond to help you. His prices are very affordable and he was very neat and careful of our kitchen floor while working. We are very happy to have found him.

My experience with University Movers could not have been better. They were flexible with their scheduling, showed up right on time, worked steadily and efficiently and were careful with everything that had to be moved. Nothing was harmed in the move and everything ended up in the correct locations throughout the house that was being moved into. Their pricing was very affordable (which was great since I was on a tight budget) and in comparison to other moving companies, you cannot find a better value for your money. I don't have a single complaint and would highly suggest using them for your future moving needs!

Jay and Will did a great job of helping out with two separate jobs, both moving furniture. Jay was flexible to how we setup the move and was experienced enough to know the best way to approach moving the different pieces. Would definitely work with him again.

Good price, quick, and very personable and professional! Rob is leaps and bounds better than other major moving companies I’ve hired. He’s affordable and extremely professional. They make sure all your stuff is moved carefully and nothing gets damaged. They go above and beyond to give the best service. They finished moving me in early and offered to help us move into our storage unit as well. Cannot recommend highly enough!

I was referred to Jason by my leasing consultant when I was planning a move to my current apartment back in June. Jason is very friendly and detail-oriented. He came to my old apartment and did an estimate, he clearly explained the breakdown of the estimate. I must say he and his team went above and beyond. The one and only elevator at my new place was under maintenance during my move, Jason did not charge me extra for that. He did most of the leg work moving my furnitures and boxes up 4 levels! I bet he lost couple lbs after that day hehe! Without him and his team, my move would not have been that smooth and efficient. That was why I referred him to my friend in July, and I am sure they took great care of her! Thank you once again for all the hard work, Jason! You guys are more than amazing! I will definitely recommend you to my friends, and if I move again, you are definitely my go-to person!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
